Paul King shared thisGreg Smith has some great insights on AI use in Technical Dilience...Paul King shared thisAI is showing up in every corner of business, including tech due diligence. But before you hand the whole process over to an algorithm, here’s the hard truth: AI is a tool. Not a replacement for experience. It’s great at data extraction and code scanning. It’s terrible at judgment, context, relationships, and knowing when something just doesn’t feel right. The details are in our latest blog, AI in Tech Diligence: The Temptation, the Truth, and the Trade-Offs, by Greg Smith, Managing Partner of TechCXO’s Product & Technology Practice. He deep dives into where and how AI actually helps, and where you still need people who’ve been in the room, asked the tough questions, and seen what tech debt looks like up close. Paul King shared thisWith the rate of change today, organizational agility is critical!Paul King shared thisMost companies talk about agility. Few build for it. In volatile markets, the ability to shift priorities without losing momentum is what separates high-growth players from the ones stuck in “reaction mode.” But agility isn't just a mindset, it’s also infrastructure. It’s how you negotiate vendor contracts. How quickly your product teams iterate. It’s whether your leadership gaps slow you down…or don’t exist at all. Paul King shared thisBrian Lui would be a great addition to any team looking for product management abilities combined with data insights!Paul King shared thisI'm excited to share that I'm officially open to new opportunities! After more than 13 years as a data-driven product leader at Marriott International and Starwood Hotels, I made a deliberate choice to invest in my own growth. I recently completed a data science bootcamp at BrainStation, and the experience was truly transformative. I'm passionate about being able to blend my product expertise with a deep technical understanding to better serve future teams and drive innovation. What's really on my mind now is the growth ahead. I learned so much in just three months, and I can't wait to see what's possible with a full year of targeted training and coaching. I'm looking for a role where I can apply this unique blend of skills. My ideal next step would be a Data Scientist position, or a Product Manager role where I can work closely with data and data scientists to build innovative products. My experience includes: 🏗️ Building ML classification models to predict outcomes and assess risk. 🏢 Crafting NLP frameworks for sentiment analysis to inform product decisions. 🤝 Leading end-to-end technology projects and collaborating cross-functionally with engineers, UX, and business leaders to achieve project milestones. 📊 Developing end-to-end Tableau solutions to deliver actionable insights from complex datasets. If you know of any roles where a mix of product leadership, a passion for data, and a commitment to continuous learning would be a great fit, I'd love to connect! #OpenToWork #DataScientist #ProductManager #ProductOwner #DataAnalytics #MachineLearning #Analytics #Data #GrowthMindset #LinkedIn

Paul King reacted on thisPaul King reacted on thisI'm thrilled to share that Compliance & Risks is now officially Adherent! While we've been hard at work building the new Adherent product compliance platform, we've also been planning this corporate rebrand. We've been able to talk about the incredible innovation going into the product, and today we can finally share the new company name! It's not just that it's a cool name, but it represents the next chapter in our history. AI is no longer an add-on or merely a productivity booster. It's woven into the way we build, and it's at the heart of what we build. Compliance teams no longer have to choose between speed and trust. We are delivering both!

It includes orgs I’ve been learning about recently, like Safe Families for Children, which creates a village of support around families in crisis so moms and dads can keep custody of their kids. Paul King liked thisPaul King liked thisWhat looks like a tech problem is often a leadership gap. Those common issues you're seeing, like product delays, buggy releases, fragile infrastructure, low engineering morale, may look like technical problems on the surface. But the real root cause isn't bad code or slow engineers. As often as not, it's the lack of senior strategic leadership guiding the tech function. In other words, the technology itself isn’t broken. What’s missing is someone with the experience and authority to: • Set the right priorities • Align engineering with business goals • Make architectural decisions that scale • Build and lead the team with clarity It reframes the problem away from “we need more devs” to “we need better leadership.” And that’s exactly where the case for a fractional CTO begins. Strategic leadership, right-sized for your growth stage, and ready to step in before the gap becomes a bottleneck. A method and system are disclosed which may be utilized to generate a simultaneous presentation within a data processing system of video data within multiple windows supported by different graphic user interfaces. Each graphic user interface is coupled to a separate display device driver. Window movements including: creation; deletion; resizing; movement; minimization; maximization; activation; enablement; or an alteration in relative background/foreground order are detected for each graphic user interface and that information and the associated display device driver for each graphic user interface are coupled to a virtual device driver which facilitates interprocess communication between two or more graphic user interfaces, wherein the portion of the video display which is managed by each graphic user interface may be ascertained. Each separate display device driver is then coupled to a single display device, wherein multiple windows supported by different graphic user interfaces may be simultaneously presented.

“Paul joined our team as a fractional VP of Engineering, during his tenure he lead various engineering departments and teams. He immediately integrated himself with the teams and took a very hands on approach. He supported by building the team, put together good agile practices, he helped improve the reliability of our core systems. On top of that he was able to advise and put together a comprehensive strategy to help migrate our organization to a primary Kubernetes/Docker based container shop, this helped reduce our AWS bill significantly. He also put a long term horizontal and vertical scalability strategy that drastically improved the uptime of our core infrastructure. I VERY STRONGLY recommend Paul to any Engineering / Technology leader looking for a tenured Fraction CTO to help their organization scale to new heights. ”

The day after Thanksgiving tends to reveal a quiet truth across the tech ecosystem. Leaders return from a short break and immediately confront the same unresolved question that defines operational success or failure in 2025. How do we build systems and teams that can scale without collapsing under complexity? Every founder and every technology leader is wrestling with that one challenge, regardless of industry. It’s no longer about deploying more tools, onboarding more vendors, or adding another automation layer. It’s about creating a governance and execution model that eliminates ambiguity and unlocks predictable delivery. In the last decade, I’ve seen one consistent pattern. Organizations don’t fail because they lack talent. They fail because they lack architectural clarity. They fail because the relationship between vision and implementation is broken. They fail because resilience was assumed, not engineered. What founders want is alignment. What engineering teams want is direction. What the business needs is a framework that ties strategy, infrastructure, and execution into one operating rhythm. When these elements converge, organizations scale cleanly. When they don’t, teams burn out, systems drift, and the business becomes reactive instead of proactive. This is the gap modern tech leadership must close. If you’re building for 2025 and beyond, here are the real questions that determine whether your organization is ready to operate at enterprise velocity: Are your systems architected for resilience or convenience? Do your teams understand the why behind the roadmap, not just the what? Is your documentation actionable, current, and tied to operational outcomes? Are your processes designed to prevent downtime, or to apologize for it? Is your automation reducing cognitive load or introducing hidden overhead? The leaders who answer these questions honestly will outperform their peers. The organizations that ignore them will spend next year paying interest on today’s technical debt. My work as a CTO has consistently shown that when you bring strategic clarity, disciplined design, and execution accountability into one orbit, you don’t just scale. You scale with precision. And that’s exactly what the market expects from top-tier technology leadership right now. If your org is preparing for its next phase of growth and you want to get these fundamentals right, I’m always open to a conversation. Strategic clarity is not optional anymore. It’s the differentiator.

There's a great episode of the TV show Deadwood called "A lie agreed upon", the title of which comes from Napoleon, who (in)famously stated "history is a set of lies agreed upon". The episode expands on this theme by exposing the delicate balance of "truth" between the new sheriff in town and the criminal elements who established themselves prior to the his arrival. Anyway, where I'm going with this is we're in one of these politely shared delusions now - the one that begins with "I used AI to help format/spell/correct my writing but otherwise wrote it myself". This, increasingly, is obviously not the case, particularly if you use LinkedIn as a primary source for examples. Look, I work with AI, I create tools with AI, I train AI models, and am involved in some exciting next generation work as well. And perhaps because of this I've become very sensitive to "AI Prose" i.e. the very matter-of-fact, didactic style it presents when creating documents. It is increasingly trivial for me to detect when someone is just posting their latest thought piece based on a prompt. We're way past the days of getting rid of em-dashes. If your prose is littered with terms like "the concrete example" or "it's <x>, but it that does not prove it is <y>", or is otherwise just an almost unnaturally organized structure of paragraphs that recite facts, or a thousand other tells I've picked up over the past year - I'm not reading it. I can't be the only one, right? If I want to know what an LLM "thinks" about something I will just ask it. AI can be a great writing enhancer. Wielded properly, as a research assistant for example, you can do amazing things with it. I use LLMs constantly to create papers. In fact, these days I use it for almost all parts of the process....except writing them. If I want someone to take the time to read and consider what I wrote, I want to provide the courtesy back that I myself took the time to do the same. Otherwise, what am I communicating? That LLMs can pattern match at a level so advanced it appears to be genuine expressions of human thought does not mean they are a substitution for it. LLMs are fantastic (when properly used) at picking out context. Humans are still very much needed for the creative input needed to make sense of it. Otherwise we'd just all be reciting facts (or lies :) ) to each other all day, right? Would love it if, on the occasions I come check out my feed here, I didn't have to wade through a wall of well meaning but (usually) auto-generated thought pieces. They are to social discussions what empty calories are to food. And don't get me started on AI-generated charts and super-dense, shiny info-graphs. Anyway, this is me - I had a thought, thought about how I wanted to communicate it, and wrote this. Call it old school if you like, but join me! It's fun.
