Hiring a social media manager in 2025? Yeah… good luck with that. Because apparently all it takes now is: -> A Canva login -> One trending audio -> “Engagement posts” with zero engagement -> A scheduling tool they ghost after week two -> And one reel that hit 3K views back in the pandemic Social media knowledge isn’t rare anymore. You can literally learn the basics for free on YouTube in under 10 minutes. So yeah, everyone can do it. But not everyone can back it up with actual strategy. And that’s what separates a poster from a professional. Strategy is the bit that matters. The thing that turns content into conversion? It kills me to say this... Anyone can post a reel... but... → Hooked in 3 seconds → Designed for retention? → Nailed the message? → Optimised for search? → And ACTUALLY get people to do something at the end? Anyone can write a caption...but... → Writes for humans and algorithms → Embeds storytelling, SEO and brand messaging in one → Knows the difference between “mid content” and revenue-driving copy Anyone can post “consistently"... but... → A funnel? → A launch? → A community? → A stand-out brand presence that people actually remember? Strategy isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the whole thing. Posting is easy. But posting with strategy? The kind that considers buyer psychology, brand positioning, key messaging, search, timing, emotional triggers, platform behaviour AND performance? That’s not content. That’s marketing. So if you're hiring a social media manager? Don’t look for someone who just knows how to post. Look for someone who lives and breathes strategy. Someone who: → Gets your brand → Knows your audience inside out → Has a plan for every piece of content → Isn’t just filling a feed, they’re building your future Because the right social media manager won’t just keep your page active. They’ll make sure your content actually performs, with strategy at the centre of every post. (Also… I think my favourite word might be strategy. But I feel like you already knew that.)

I've noticed two traits in every high-performing social media manager I've worked with: 1) They have an Insatiable curiosity about everything. They're interested in literally everything. Nothing is boring to them. They can find a story in anything. 2) They’re polymaths. They're those people at parties who know a little bit about everything. They're deep in obscure subreddits. They consume books/shows/movies/articles outside their field. They remember seemingly random, but compelling and interesting insights and facts. Here's why this matters: Your content is only as good as your mental library. And your mental library is only as good as your curiosity. The more you learn, the better the content will be. But most "experts" I see don't focus on this. They often spend more time on the tactical side of social media, when to post, optimal hashtag usage, content formats, etc. That tactical approach often gets you stuck in a loop of recycled "tried and true" but uninteresting approaches and shallow metrics. But the real ones? They're different. They are content creators, not content recyclers.

If I were hiring a social media manager right now, the number one thing I'd look for wouldn't be platform fluency or follower growth. It would be anticipation. Are you reactive or proactive? What did you see coming, you clever thing, you? The most valuable person on a social team is often the one who can say, without fanfare, "I've already thought about that, and..." We sit on an unusual amount of information: sentiment shifts, search behavior, cultural undercurrents, etc. If you're paying attention, you can often feel the ripple before the wave. So if you're building a portfolio in 2026, don't just list outputs. Tell me a story. What you anticipated. What you prevented. What you prepared for before anyone else saw it. That's the difference between managing social media and leading it.

The best social media manager I had ever hired had no experience. So what made her stand out? This hire showed me she GOT social. She was a consumer with a marketing brain. Every question was met with a comprehensive understanding of why content performed and why it got others to buy, engage, etc. She didn't sample brands because they were "viral." She showed me she understood how they set themselves apart, how they adapted, the weight of community, and so on. Of course, she already had skills in copywriting, collaboration, time management, creative concepting, trend analysis, etc. I knew that we could teach her everything else. And we did. We collaborated on processes, campaign development, how to manage, and all of the other intricate things social professionals do. She went on to work on some of the biggest brands we all know today. And succeeded. The moral of the story? I know it's scary to shy away from a resume that might not have the 3-5 years of experience working on XYZ household brand name with a 5000% increase of engagements per year... But we, or whoever is hiring, can also assess knowledge outside a single PDF portal submission. Some professionals just deserve a chance.

I have been a Social Media Manager for 3 years now, and I can tell you for free that it is one profession that is highly underrated. From the outside, it looks like “just posting.” But in reality, it’s: 📌Building strategy around business goals 📌Crafting content that connects, not just fills a feed 📌Understanding psychology, trends, and audience behaviour 📌Monitoring analytics to drive growth and impact 📌 It’s researching trends, studying algorithms, and understanding what makes people stop scrolling. 📌It’s the reality of knowing good ideas mean nothing if they don’t drive results It’s not just scheduling posts. It’s brand positioning. Social media is one of the most fast-paced, demanding, and rewarding fields in marketing today. And those of us in it know, it takes creativity, resilience, and a whole lot of heart. ❤️ Do you agree? #socialmediamanager
