Alexander Shulman shared thisLast week in China I sat across from a partner company’s engineer who doesn’t speak a word of English. I don’t speak Mandarin. We had a full technical conversation anyway. Real-time AI translation running on our phones and laptops. Everyone spoke their native language. Everyone else read the translation as it happened. No interpreter, no awkward pauses, no “let me find the English word.” Just engineers solving a problem. What struck me wasn’t the novelty. It was how quickly it stopped feeling novel. Ten minutes in, nobody was thinking about the translation layer at all. Here’s what I keep coming back to: language has been one of the last real boundaries in the global labor market. Not skill, not time zones, not even cost - those got managed years ago. But “must be fluent in English” quietly gated who could work with whom. When language stops being a hiring requirement, the talent pool isn’t a country or a region. It’s the planet. Every small company becomes multinational by default - not as ambition, but as the path of least resistance. Would you hire a brilliant specialist who doesn’t speak the company’s main language? Would you establish an international partnership with a company whose employees don’t speak English? When do you think technology will be ready to completely remove that barrier?

Alexander Shulman shared thisA new study from Stanford, Berkeley, CMU and Microsoft Research (“The Price Reversal Phenomenon”) found something every engineering leader should sit with: in 32% of model-pair comparisons, the model with the lower listed price ended up costing more to finish the job. Gemini 3 Flash is listed 80% cheaper than GPT-5.4. On real tasks, it ran 38% more expensive. The reason isn’t the sticker price. It’s the thinking. The same prompt can make one model burn 900% more reasoning tokens than another, and the same model can vary up to 9.7x run to run. So the per-token price tells you almost nothing. What matters is output quality and total cost to done. That’s exactly how it works with people, too. The headline rate of a hire says little about what a result actually costs you. But here’s the difference — and it’s the whole job of a manager. A model��s reasoning is fixed at inference time - you can’t coach it mid-task. A person’s grows with every conversation. You can fine-tune a model offline, but in the moment it runs, it is what it is. A person you can guide, mentor, and develop in real time. And that’s where the real leverage is. Clear direction, honest feedback, mentoring, watching the progress and not just the price - that’s the work.

Just another Friday buried in functionality and UX discussions, architecture decisions, Jira tickets and HR matters — which, honestly, is probably the most honest proof that I’ve been fully present in the journey rather than watching it from the outside. But anniversaries like this aren’t really about industries or job titles. They’re about people. So — overdue, and all the more sincere for it: Thank you to every colleague who made the work worth doing. At ASBIS, where I learned what product ownership at scale actually felt like. At Spotware, where we built something traders genuinely loved and I grew faster than I expected. At FxPro, where the scale was humbling and the team made it possible. And at Tototheo Global, where the mission is unlike anything I’ve worked on before — and the people match it. Thank you to partners, clients, and everyone who trusted us with problems that mattered. Thank you to friends and acquaintances - the ones in Cyprus who made a foreign country feel like home, the ones scattered across time zones who check in anyway. If your team runs a self-hosted instance — as many companies do for security and compliance reasons — you're largely left out. I decided to fix that. I'm open-sourcing gitlab-local-mcp, an MCP server that brings the full merge request workflow directly into your IDE. Alexander Shulman liked thisAlexander Shulman liked thisA few weeks ago, I was scammed by a host on Booking.com. I rented a house in the mountains for two months during the summer. Before booking, I specifically confirmed several important amenities with the host. After I arrived, it became clear that many of them either didn't exist or were completely different from what had been advertised and confirmed. I won't go into all the details here, as I've already shared the full story in an earlier post. What surprised me most was Booking.com's response. Despite clear discrepancies between what had been advertised and what was actually provided, Booking.com declined to help, explaining that they are "just a platform." That left me with several options. First, I initiated a chargeback through my bank. Second, thanks to one of my LinkedIn connections, I learned about another option. Based on the recommendation I received, I submitted a formal complaint to the Cyprus Consumer Protection Service in addition to pursuing my bank dispute. I don't yet know what the outcome will be. However, I wanted to share this because many consumers simply don't know this option exists. If you've been misled by a business operating in Cyprus, it may be worth reviewing your rights before assuming your only choices are accepting the loss or arguing with the seller. Alexander Shulman liked thisMy candidates will often hear me say: “You can talk to me like I’m your friend or sister.” Because of that, I can tell you the names, ages, and even birthdays of some of my candidates’ kids, when they’re getting married, where they have vacation homes, or what their spouse does for a living - all before I even meet them onsite. None of that is in their resume. Recruiting is chaotic, but whenever I can, I try to get to know my candidates beyond their experience because careers are personal, and the decisions people make are rarely just about the job. Years ago, I had a sales candidate in process who I knew I’d be fighting an uphill battle for. He genuinely wanted to join our startup because he was craving growth after being stagnant in a slow moving company, but his wife understandably preferred the stability and higher salary of a larger company for their growing family. When I extended the offer, he happily accepted. Then, as I was grabbing lunch with my team one day, I got the call every recruiter dreads - he had accepted another offer that paid $40k more at a big, well known and successful company. There was no room for us to increase the compensation, and my Director told me I’d done everything I could and there was nothing more I could do. So I did the one thing I could: stay his friend - not to convince him to change his mind, but to remind him, as a friend, of his true motivations for growth. I kept checking in with him and two weeks into his new role, he called me and said he made a mistake and asked if our offer was still on the table and we happily welcomed him. He ended up staying for seven years. My quality-of-hire metrics have always been high with 100% of my candidates staying at a company over a year and many staying 5-10+ years. When you’re able to get to know your candidates on a deeper, personal level, you can help them make the right career decisions they’ll still feel good about years later. #Recruiting #CandidateExperience #CreateImpact

But with that growth comes a new wave of regulation. A draft bill introduced by Paata Kvizhinadze and 11 lawmakers aims to expand the National Bank’s oversight of the sector: 🔍 More direct oversight (including on-site inspections) 💼 Stricter financial requirements (minimum capital, risk management) 📑 Stronger compliance expectations around AML and fund transfers I believe this is a critical step toward building long-term trust in our digital asset ecosystem. It aligns Georgia with global standards — and gives serious players the clarity they need to grow responsibly. But here’s the real question: What do you expect to see in the next 5 years?
