  • The fourth edition of India Energy Week is imminent. Under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Govt of India, this is one of a truly exciting showcase with global presence of international and national energy majors, policymakers, innovators, consulting firms, startups, service providers and more. 10,000+ attendees in 2023 at Bangalore. 35,000 and counting the following year at Goa. 70,000 estimated visitor footfalls in 2025 at New Delhi. 75,000 at least expected as it returns to Goa later this month. Just one eyebrow-raising issue. While India has been at the forefront of advocacy against single-use plastics and a vocal supporter of circular economy initiatives, why must a global energy event use lanyards? Consider this: A typical lanyard contains - Polyester strap: 12 g - Plastic badge holder: 10 g - Metal clip + ring: 5 g 80,000 attendees means: - Plastics used: About 1.5 tons - Metals used: About 300 kgs Using emission factors: - Polyester (PET) strap: 2.6–3.2 kg CO₂e/kg - PVC badge holder: 2.4–3.0 kg CO₂e/kg - PET badge holder (rPET/PET): 2.3–3.0 kg CO₂e/kg - Steel (clip/ring): 1.6–2.1 kg CO₂e/kg (mix of primary and recycled) - Zinc alloy (clip): 3.0–4.0 kg CO₂e/kg That adds up roughly to 5 tons of CO2 for this conference alone, considering production of the lanyards only (no transport, energy use at venue, or end‑of‑life impact). So what can the organisers consider doing? How can we have an energy conference that orients itself better towards sustainability? - Reuse bins at exit: Recover up to 80% of lanyards - make sure they are not printed with the year and location. They can then be reissued for the next event. - Stamped steel wire clips: Reduce clip mass to ~3 g—metals drop to ~30 kg. - rPET straps + PET holders: Eliminate PVC and improve recyclability; keep weights constant. - Narrow straps (15 mm): Strap mass ~8–9 g—plastics drop by ~10–20 kg. - Best option: Use pure digital identities linked to phones or stick-on bar codes #sustainableenergy #plasticpollution

    What happens to event banners after the event? The photograph below was taken at the 10th Reflections of The Lord Mayor Gala Evening in 2025. Around the room, roll-up banners were stationed beside the respective stained glass roundel streams, helping guests understand the different creative pathways behind the evening. They were not simply decorative. They helped welcome guests, recognise the work of participants and artists, and tell the wider story of Reflections. As we begin shaping future Reflections events, I am keen that we think not only about what guests see on the night, but also about what happens to event materials afterwards. That has led me to a practical question: What happens to roll-up banners once an event has ended? Many traditional roll-up banners combine reusable aluminium hardware with printed graphics that may be made from PVC or other materials that are not easily recycled through ordinary routes. As I have started looking into this, I understand that some can be recycled by specialist providers, while others can be repurposed into bags, pencil cases, cushion covers, document wallets or other useful items. But perhaps the better question is: how do we design event signage to create less waste in the first place? I am beginning to think we may need a more thoughtful hierarchy: Use fewer banners. Only print what is genuinely needed. Design evergreen banners. Create core messaging that can be reused year after year. Use replaceable graphics where possible. Keep the hardware; change only what needs to be changed. Choose PVC-free or recyclable materials where feasible. Ask suppliers better questions before ordering. Repurpose retired banners creatively. Especially where they can support youth engagement, creative learning or community projects. Recycle through specialist routes. Particularly where materials cannot enter normal recycling streams. This is not about perfection, and I certainly do not claim to have all the answers. I am trying to learn from others who may already be finding practical ways to square the circle: how do we create useful event materials without creating unnecessary waste? For organisations working in civic life, culture, education or charity, sustainability is not only about the big statements. Sometimes it begins with asking: What happens to this after everyone has gone home?     Balloons are one of those event choices that rarely gets questioned. When they do end up in the bin, two things happen. They go to landfill, where latex, despite being marketed as biodegradable, can take decades to break down under the anaerobic conditions of a landfill. Or they get incinerated, where the chemical additives used in production, plasticisers, flame retardants, dyes are released in the process. And that is the best-case scenario. The balloons that don't make it into the bin travel. They end up in oceans and fields, where animals mistake them for food. Foil balloons don't degrade at all. There are alternatives that hold up just as well visually: reusable fabric bunting, paper pompoms that fold flat for storage, traditional Japanese paper balloons that can be deflated and reused, or paper pinwheels. For larger installations, inflatable spheres made for repeated use replace balloon arches without the waste. None of this requires a compromise on atmosphere. It just requires choosing once instead of throwing away every time.

    I had the chance to catch Coldplay’s Music concert at Wembley Stadium; and beyond the music, the sustainability elements blew me away. Here’s how they’re setting the bar for green concerts: * Waste-free stadiums: reusable cups for drinks with easy returns. In India, organizations like Skrap and Hasiru Dala Innovations are doing incredible work managing waste at concerts. * Refill stations: fans stayed hydrated without single-use plastics, thanks to free water refills. In India, my friends at Greenlit helped roll this out at large-scale events. * Fan-powered energy: kinetic dance floors and stationary bikes that literally let the crowd help power the show. * Eco wristbands: LED wristbands made from compostable, plant-based materials. Impressively, 86% were returned and reused. Quick comparison on wristband return rates (as of early 2025): 1. South Korea: 99% 2. Japan: 97% 3. Finland: 96% 4. Singapore & Malaysia: 91% 5. Thailand: 89% 6. USA (Seattle): ~86% 7. UK (London, Wembley): ~86% 8. India (Ahmedabad): ~72% And the overall impact? A 59% reduction in tour carbon emissions, backed by renewable energy setups, reforestation, and better logistics. What struck me most was how the same tools that fuel joy; music, dancing, lights; were repurposed to fuel sustainability. Here is proof that sustainability and celebration can co-exist at scale. Now imagine if our public events served our cities like this too — Independence Day melas that become experiences of unity and sustainability, cricket matches powered by reusables and renewable energy, community festivals where waste truly goes to zero.     An impressive 85% return rate for reusable cups was registered in Aarhus in less than 8 months – proving that consumer behavior can be shifted with the right infrastructure, but what does this success tell us about the future of reusable packaging at scale? I recently reviewed the "State of Zero Waste Municipalities Report", which offers a comprehensive overview of how communities are reimagining waste management and material consumption across Europe and globally. This report highlights how the Zero Waste Cities model is helping municipalities across Europe not only meet but exceed legislative targets. There are several promising case studies; consider some of my favorites from the report: 🟢 Viladecans' "Take a step, bring your container" campaign involved 82 shops and avoided 8,504 disposable items in 3 months by promoting reusable alternatives. 🟢 Tallinn's mandate for reusable tableware at city-wide events has a 92% return rate and helped decrease waste generation per participant by two-thirds between 2019 and 2023. 🟢 In Slovenia, Komunala Škofja Loka's reusable cup rental service has already avoided 23,000 single-use cups since its launch in March 2024.     Anyone else extra excited for the #Olympics because of the deliberate attention to sustainability? Here are some ways #Paris2024 is aiming to elevate the conversation… 🤑 🛂 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 ‘𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁’: In the past, cities calculated emissions after the event was over. The Paris team set forward-looking metrics for construction, biodiversity, mass transit access, plant-based food availability and waste diversion, to name just a few. 🏗️ 🚧 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Building new infrastructure is a big environmental drag — about one-third of the total impact. Only one new sports venue, the Aquatics Centre, was built specifically for Paris 2024. It uses bio-sourced materials for the structure, reclaimed and recycled products, and is powered by one of the largest urban solar farms in France. The Olympics Village, built in a low-income suburb, will be transformed into residential apartments after. ⛽️🚫 𝗡𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗹 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱: In Paris, there’s an abundance of low-carbon electricity — 78% from nuclear and 19% from renewables — and the committee prioritized ensuring all venues are connected. This reduces the need for diesel generators used by media for broadcast feeds (typically the biggest emitter on-site). 🚌🚊 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: All of the venues are located within a 10-km (6.2 mile) radius, all accessible by some form of public transportation, as well as an extensive 34-mile network of cycling lanes. The amount of vehicles used by the committee itself — most hybrid or electric — was reduced by one-third compared with past events. 🥤🌱 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹: Paris 2024 is the largest sporting event to opt for reusable cups, replacing 13 million disposable ones. Spectators can bring refillable bottles to use at 700 water and soda stations. The goal is to halve the amount of single-use plastics distributed during the event. Within the catering operations, the goal is to halve the average carbon footprint of the 13 million meals served over the games. Part of this relates to a decision to source about 80% of the food, much of it plant-based, from France. Leftover food will be donated or composted to produce renewable gas. All the tableware is reusable. 🇫🇷🇰🇪🇬🇹🇳🇬🇨🇩🇸🇳 Paris 2024 purchased 𝟭.𝟰 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘀, most related to forest protection in Kenya and Guatemala, cookstove distribution in Kenya, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and renewable electricity installations in Senegal.   • You might be surprised to learn that for decades I worked to make recycling and composting succeed at live events. In a recent feature with Packaging World (“r.World | Reuse Cracks the Code on Waste at Live Events”), I shared the hard truth that eventually became impossible to ignore: in real-world high volume event settings, most single-use items still end up in landfill. That realization forced a shift in how I thought about waste reduction. The most important question became: which system actually works at scale? For me, reuse is the clear answer. That’s why I launched r.World | Reuse. A few lessons from the journey: ➡️ Keep it simple. If the system is easy, people participate. That’s how we consistently see 90%+ return rates at large live events. ➡️ Design matters. Remove the reason to take a cup home - like a logo or event name - and return rates take care of themselves. ➡️ Infrastructure, not pilots. Reuse only works when it’s run like a real service, with washing, tracking, and redeployment built in from day one. ➡️ Reuse reduces costs. When reuse is designed to repeat and scale, it outperforms single-use on both economics and impact. We talk a lot about reduce, reuse, recycle. That order matters, and it’s time we start moving upstream from recycling to reuse.     This morning, I picked up a purple balloon in my yard. I love celebrations and decorating… …but this was another reminder of how often we rely on single-use plastics for special occasions. From birthdays to graduations to weddings, our celebrations leave a trail of waste. Is this really necessary? I believe we can have beautiful and fun setups without all the waste – And without making things complicated. Here are some alternatives to common single-use plastic items: 🎉 Plastic Balloons: Instead of plastic balloons, consider using reusable fabric banners or garlands. They are festive, customizable, and can be used for years. 🎉 Plastic Utensils: Replace plastic forks, knives, and spoons with reusable or compostable or bamboo alternatives. They are just as convenient and look much nicer! 🎉 Plastic Plates: Opt for reusable plates or if you need to use single-use options, choose biodegradable plates made from materials like palm leaves or sugarcane. 🎉 Plastic Cups: Swap out plastic cups for stainless steel or glass alternatives. If you need disposable options, choose compostable cups made from corn or paper. 🎉 Plastic Straws: Use stainless steel, bamboo, or silicone straws instead of plastic ones. They are durable and can be easily cleaned for repeated use. 🎉 Plastic Party Favors: Offer guests eco-friendly favors like potted plants, seed packets, or handmade soaps. (Also, are party favors really needed for kids' birthday parties? Just asking as a fellow parent 🤪) 🎉 Plastic Tablecloths: Replace plastic tablecloths with fabric ones. They add elegance to your event and can be washed and reused many times. A rustic table may not even need a table cloths. 🎉 Plastic Confetti: Choose biodegradable confetti made from paper, leaves, or flower petals. It’s beautiful and won’t harm wildlife. 🎉 Plastic Gift Wrap: Use recycled paper, fabric wraps, or reusable gift bags instead of plastic-based wrapping paper. These options are stylish and reduce waste.  🎉 Plastic Gift Bags: In our family, we use reusable gift bags and have a tradition of giving them back after the celebration. It’s become a fun ritual, sharing stories around the events a specific bag has been to 😊 With these small changes, our celebrations can be just as joyous and memorable while making forward-thinking, long-term, and smart choices.     The Growing Concern Over 200 ml PET Bottles at Events Lately, it seems like those small 200 ml plastic bottles are everywhere—at weddings, conferences, office meetings, you name it. While they might seem like a convenient option for quenching thirst, their rising popularity is becoming a significant environmental concern. Convenience Comes at a Cost Sure, these tiny bottles are easy to hand out and eliminate the need for washing glasses or managing refill stations. Guests can grab a bottle and go, which seems ideal for large gatherings. But this convenience masks a bigger issue: the impact on our environment. Every one of these bottles is typically used just once before being tossed away. Given their small size, they often slip through the cracks of recycling efforts and end up in landfills or polluting our oceans. This not only contributes to the growing problem of plastic waste but also undermines the efforts many of us are making to reduce single-use plastics in our daily lives. Why It Matters We've all seen the troubling images of oceans littered with plastic and wildlife affected by our waste. Each of those little bottles adds up. When hundreds or even thousands are used at a single event, the environmental footprint becomes significant. Moreover, producing these bottles consumes resources and energy, leading to more greenhouse gas emissions. It's a chain reaction that starts with a seemingly harmless choice. What Can We Do Instead? The good news is, there are plenty of alternatives that are just as convenient but far more sustainable: 1. Water Stations: Setting up water dispensers allows guests to refill glasses or reusable bottles. It’s a simple step that can dramatically cut down on plastic waste. 2. Reusable Glassware: Using real glasses adds a touch of class to any event and eliminates plastic waste. If washing up is a concern, consider hiring a service or using biodegradable options. 3. Branded Reusable Bottles: Providing guests with a reusable bottle not only reduces waste but also serves as a memorable takeaway from the event. 4. Larger Shared Bottles: Placing larger bottles or pitchers on tables reduces the number of individual containers needed. Making a Positive Change Every event is an opportunity to make a positive impact. By choosing more sustainable options, we not only reduce waste but also set an example for others to follow. It's about balancing convenience with responsibility. Let's rethink the use of those 200 ml PET bottles. With a bit of planning, we can host events that are both enjoyable and kinder to our planet. After all, taking care of the environment is a shared responsibility, and every little bit helps.
