Your Domain Name Won’t Make AI Cite You—But This Might

AI visibility isn’t just an SEO question anymore. It’s becoming a brand-discovery question—and the data challenges some common assumptions about domains.

At Dynadot, we reviewed studies covering more than 1 million cited URLs to see what actually influences AI citations.

A few findings stood out:

  • TLD choice matters to people, but it doesn’t appear to act as an AI citation signal.
  • COM, .ORG, .IO, and .AI each averaged 1.7 citations per URL in one major study.
  • Content type matters more. Guide pages averaged 2.7 citations, compared with 1.5 for pricing pages.
  • Clean URLs performed better: 2.1 citations without query strings versus 1.6 with parameters.
  • AI platforms use different source ecosystems, so visibility on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI experiences can look very different.
  • Traditional SEO still matters because broader organic visibility gives AI systems more chances to discover a brand.

The takeaway: choose a domain for clarity, memorability, trust, and brand fit—not because you expect a particular extension to win with AI.

Then invest in useful content, consistent brand signals, crawler access, and clean technical setup.

We unpack the data and a practical AI visibility audit in our latest Dynadot Hub article.
