Reflections on ICANN86 – Seville As my engagement team and I wrap up a successful and impactful trip I'd like to share some reflections. Carrying those heavy laptop bags all week seems a bit lighter knowing what an impact on harms our efforts make. ICANN86 in Seville once again reinforced the strength and complexity of the multistakeholder model. Bringing together governments, registries, registrars, and the technical community, the Policy Forum focused on the issues that continue to shape the future of the DNS: abuse mitigation, access to registration data, and the evolving policy environment around the next round of gTLDs. These conversations are no longer theoretical they are increasingly operational, with direct implications for how we collectively maintain a stable, secure, and trusted Internet. One of the most consistent themes throughout the week was the growing expectation for measurable, evidence-based approaches to DNS abuse mitigation. There is clear momentum toward more defined responsibilities, improved collaboration, and better data to support decision-making. This will be balanced against the need to respect due process, data privacy and the boundaries of ICANN’s remit. From a CleanDNS perspective, the direction of travel is clear. The community is moving toward greater accountability, more structured frameworks, and stronger alignment between policy and operational response. As these expectations mature, there is a growing opportunity for continued collaboration between providers and registries and registrars to deliver and develop actionable, high-confidence intelligence that supports contracted parties efforts in meeting these obligations. During decades of protecting customers against the most sophisticated threats on the planet, one challenge has remained constant: blocking a malicious domain shields the target, but the attacker infrastructure stays live, ready to pivot and claim the next victim. TrendAI protects its customers the moment a threat emerges, but securing the whole digital ecosystem demanded something more. Now, with this partnership, that something more is here. That ends today. TrendAI is announcing a partnership with CleanDNS that extends the reach of threat intelligence beyond customer environments and into the global DNS ecosystem itself. The mission is no longer just to block attacker domains. It is to remove them from the internet entirely. For months, TrendAI research teams have been running agentic AI workflows and in-house machine learning models that identify and monitor attacker infrastructure in near-real time, targeting the left-of-kill-chain threats that underpin virtually every major attack today: infostealers harvesting credentials at industrial scale, phishing-as-a-service platforms available to any aspiring criminal, loaders delivering secondary payloads to compromised systems, and RATs establishing persistent hands-on access to victim environments. Hundreds of malicious domains are identified, tagged, and blocked every day, often before attackers have had the chance to deploy them in live campaigns. Now TrendAI feeds those high-confidence command-and-control and delivery domains to CleanDNS in real time, packaged with structured evidentiary data that meets registrar and registry standards. CleanDNS processes each case through its platform and engages the appropriate registrar or registry via existing contractual channels, suspending, sinkholing, or removing domains entirely. Actions for CleanDNS clients occur in as little as 12 minutes. All reports are verified and delivered within an average of 30 minutes. End-to-end resolution across the whole internet averages 2.5 days. A confirmed Lumma Stealer C&C domain went from first observation to TrendAI Vision One protection in seven minutes. It was off the internet entirely in just over a day. With human-in-the-loop validation now removed given a 100% verification rate across the program, that timeline is compressing further. We were delighted to be part of the CENTR Jamboree this week, presenting alongside Nominet and NetBeacon Institute on Collaboration in tackling DNS abuse. Bringing together registry operators and industry partners, the discussions reinforced a shared recognition: addressing online harm requires coordinated action, clear allocation of responsibility, and a consistent, evidence-led approach. At CleanDNS, we believe meaningful progress comes from moving beyond volume-based approaches to focus on high-quality, actionable evidence and operational workflows that enable timely intervention. It was encouraging to see strong engagement from the ccTLD community and a willingness to continue advancing the fight against abuse online. Thanks to CENTR, Jake Vincet and the wider Nominet team for the collaboration, we look forward to continuing the work.
