GIVING STRATEGIES

A deeper dive into a couple of ideas that we have discussed with financial experts:

QCDs & RMDs

If you’re over 70½, making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from your IRA to a nonprofit can reduce your taxable income and satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). Because the gift goes straight from your IRA to a qualified 501(c)(3) like Green Empowerment, it isn’t counted as income—helping you avoid moving into a higher tax bracket. Read more here about the win-win of QCDs & RMDs.

Appreciated Securities

With a strong stock market in 2025, many people are discovering they’re "overweighted" in certain stocks or mutual funds. Donating appreciated securities (including stock and mutual fund shares) is a tax-smart option: your charity receives the full value, you avoid capital gains tax, and if you itemize, you can deduct the fair market value.  Be careful - confirm with your financial advisor that you are gifting shares that have appreciated in value!

Itemizing

If you itemize, this may be a good moment to make a year-end gift—cash or stock—or even “bunch” several years of giving into a single donation before tax rules change in 2026.

DAFs

Most US based 501c3 nonprofits accept donations directly from Donor Advised Funds (DAF), including Green Empowerment! In addition to sending a one time gift through your DAF, you can also set up recurring donations through a DAF. Learn more here!

In 2024, individual giving accounted for over two-thirds of total charitable giving in the United States (NPT). Individuals give more than companies and foundations combined. When you choose to give - whether it is to Green Empowerment or another organization you believe in - you are joining a vital force in our society and helping create the change we need.
