“Thank you for your interest in working with my group. Unfortunately, I don't have any openings now or in the foreseeable future. I wish you the best as you go forward in your career.” I’ve written this email in response to #postdoc seekers at least two dozen times this week alone. So have my colleagues. It’s not because we don’t want to hire these amazing postdocs. It’s because our funding has been decimated. You’ve seen the waves of posts of prospective #PhD students who had their offers withdrawn as the US government capriciously cut funding as part of the current administration’s war on higher education. The consequences of these actions are much greater than hurting us academics. I’ve had three calls this week from equipment vendors trying to get me to upgrade or buy new equipment. If we’re cutting student lines, how could we afford to buy equipment now? Who is going to use said equipment? For those who gleefully think they’re winning this war on #science and #highered, the consequences could be disastrous. Cuts in science funding will cause: 1. Economic Decline and Job Losses Innovation Slowdown: Federal funding fuels basic science, which underpins technological innovation. Without it, the pipeline of new technologies—from medical devices to clean energy—slows dramatically Local Economies Hit: Research universities contribute billions to local economies. For example, UC Davis alone generates around $2 billion in economic activity and supports nearly 10,000 jobs. Cuts could lead to job losses and reduced economic vitality 2. Loss of Global Competitiveness The U.S. has historically led the world in science and technology due to robust federal investment. Reducing this support risks ceding leadership to other nations that continue to invest heavily in R&D 3. Stifled Medical and Scientific Breakthroughs Research into diseases, public health, and emerging technologies often begins with federally funded basic science. Without this foundation, life-saving discoveries may be delayed or never realized 4. Brain Drain and Talent Loss Young scientists and researchers may seek opportunities abroad or leave academia altogether if funding dries up. This weakens the talent pipeline and reduces the nation's capacity for innovation 5. Undermining Education and Equity Many research grants support graduate students and early-career researchers. Cuts disproportionately affect underrepresented groups who rely on these opportunities to enter STEM fields, exacerbating inequality 6. Long-Term National Security Risks Scientific research contributes to national defense, cybersecurity, and pandemic preparedness. Undermining this work could leave the country more vulnerable to future crises

Some academic supervisors seem to believe that refusing co-authorship with their doctoral students is an ethical stance—a way to "protect the student's CV" or ensure students get "sole credit." I want to challenge this assumption. The "heroic individual author" is part of a modernist, progressivist model of knowledge production that doesn't reflect how research actually works. Knowledge is collaborative, dialogic, and socially situated. When we pretend otherwise, we perpetuate myths about academic work that harm transparent research practices. COPE guidelines explicitly address "ghost authorship"—when someone makes substantial contributions to research but isn't named as an author. This isn't just about gift authorship (the problem we talk about more often). Ghost authorship is equally problematic. When supervisors contribute substantively to research design, analysis, or writing, refusing authorship doesn't protect students—it obscures the actual intellectual labour behind the work. In qualitative research in particular, this matters. Our epistemological and analytical positions shape interpretation. When supervisors' contributions to conceptual framing, analytical decisions, or theoretical positioning are obscured, the work risks being unreflexive about the dialogic process through which meaning was constructed. Transparency about collaboration is part of methodological rigour. Refusing co-authorship when we've made genuine contributions isn't an ethical position—it potentially misrepresents the research process. And it may actually disadvantage early career researchers. Papers with established academics as co-authors gain significantly higher visibility, citation rates, and readership. Our doctoral students benefit from: • Increased paper visibility through supervisor networks and reputation • Higher citation rates that boost early career metrics during crucial job market years • Transparent acknowledgment of collaborative intellectual work • Modeling of ethical authorship practices they'll use throughout their careers • Recognition that knowledge production is inherently collaborative Of course, students should absolutely have sole-authored publications where appropriate. But framing automatic refusal of co-authorship as the ethical choice fundamentally misunderstands both research ethics and how collaborative knowledge production works. Ethical research, especially in international and interdisciplinary settings, requires moving beyond a compliance-focused approach toward a proactive, values-driven ethical culture embedded across the research lifecycle. In practice, many ethical lapses do not stem from deliberate misconduct but from systemic pressures such as the “publish or perish” culture, intense competition for funding, limited ethical awareness, and weak ethical leadership. This reality highlights the need to integrate ethical reflection at the earliest stages of research design, rather than treating ethics as a post hoc approval exercise. Strong ethical leadership by principal investigators and senior scholars, coupled with active mentorship of early career researchers, open institutional forums for discussing ethical dilemmas, and the use of real world anonymized case studies, can significantly enhance ethical decision making. At the same time, the scope of research ethics has expanded far beyond traditional concerns of privacy and anonymity. In the era of big data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, emerging challenges include algorithmic bias in applications such as hiring, credit scoring, and predictive policing; ambiguous data ownership and secondary data use without genuinely informed consent; opaque “black box” models that undermine transparency and accountability; and the substantial environmental costs associated with data centers and energy intensive model training. Maintaining research integrity in a highly competitive academic environment presents additional challenges. Questionable research practices, such as selective reporting, p-hacking, HARKing, inappropriate authorship, salami slicing, undisclosed conflicts of interest, and engagement with predatory journals or conferences, can quietly erode scientific credibility even in the absence of outright fraud. In this context, open science practices, pre-registration, data and code sharing, clear education on publication ethics, and robust conflict of interest, management systems play a critical role. These measures must be accompanied by a shift in research evaluation metrics away from sheer publication counts toward quality, rigor, reproducibility, and societal impact. Ethical challenges in research are further intensified by cultural, linguistic, regulatory, and socioeconomic differences, raising concerns about meaningful informed consent, equitable benefit sharing, harmonized ethical review processes, and the protection of vulnerable populations. Addressing these issues requires culturally competent ethical review mechanisms, equitable and genuinely collaborative international partnerships, sustained community engagement, and ethical capacity building. Concurrently, these efforts affirm that ethical research is not merely a procedural requirement, but an ongoing, shared responsibility rooted in fairness, accountability, respect, and global equity. keynote address delivered at an Intl Conf.

For all papers involving research partnerships across the Global South and Global North, we are now asking authors to complete an Equitable Partnership Declaration, which we publish alongside accepted papers. The exercise aims to allow researchers who have thought extensively about such issues to showcase their good practice, and to highlight expectations for those who have yet to engage so deeply, enabling them to adapt their approach for their next project. We ask authors to describe: 1. What involvement researchers who are based in the country or countries of study had during study design, clinical study processes, data interpretation, and manuscript preparation 2. How funding was used to remunerate and enhance the skills of researchers in the countries of study, and to improve research infrastructure at the study sites 3. How safe working conditions for study staff were guaranteed 4. How the study address the research and policy priorities of its location 5. How research products will be shared in the community of study 6. How individuals, communities, and environments were protected from harm 7. As a scholar and scientist from the Global South who leads the Earth Daughters's Indigenous science research, I offer these critical reflections: Researchers are accountable for all harm their work causes, especially to Indigenous and Global South communities. Any harm caused by research is inseparable from its author, particularly in the Global South where vulnerabilities are heightened. Accountability persists long after publication, especially when the research impacts marginalized populations. Indirect damage still originates from the researcher’s actions, and this is critical when working with historically exploited communities. Ethical responsibility demands foresight of all possible harm, especially in contexts of cultural sensitivity and power imbalance. A researcher cannot escape the moral weight of their findings, particularly when those findings affect Indigenous knowledge systems. Every discovery binds its creator to its outcomes, especially when those outcomes shape lives in the Global South. Ignoring harm amplifies culpability, not absolves it—most of all when harm falls on vulnerable communities. Research and researcher are permanently linked in ethical judgment, especially when trust and equity are at stake in local or Indigenous contexts.

Today I received yet another unsolicited email offering USD 1,000–3,500 per research paper for producing manuscripts based only on a client's keywords, with the expectation of delivering publication-ready papers for submission to high-impact journals. This is deeply concerning. The commercialization of scientific authorship is becoming an increasingly sophisticated industry. When research can be commissioned, written, and submitted by third parties for a fee, it undermines the very foundations of scholarship: originality, integrity, accountability, and trust. Scientific publications are meant to represent the genuine intellectual contributions of the listed authors. Outsourcing research design, data collection, analysis, and manuscript writing to commercial entities not only violates accepted principles of research ethics but also erodes public confidence in science and devalues the work of researchers who invest years in developing expertise and conducting rigorous investigations. The consequences extend far beyond academia: - It pollutes the scientific literature with work of questionable provenance. - It distorts research metrics and academic promotions. - It creates unfair competition for honest researchers. - Ultimately, it weakens society's trust in scientific evidence. As researchers, editors, reviewers, universities, and funding agencies, we share a collective responsibility to reject these practices. Academic success should be built on curiosity, rigor, collaboration, and ethical conduct, not on the ability to purchase publications. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁? Governments are among the biggest funders of #PublicHealth research, but what happens when the same entities shaping health policy also shape the evidence base? A new scoping review in 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 (https://lnkd.in/e7U-cdQq) addresses a troubling and underexplored issue: the influence of governments on public health research. The review reveals that 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱 (sometimes directly, sometimes subtly) across all stages of the research cycle. This influence can involve ➡️ delaying publication of findings, ➡️ shaping research questions to align with political agendas, or ➡️ fostering environments where researchers self-censor to secure future funding. Out of 17 reviewed documents, 13 reported predominantly negative government influence, with only one showing a wholly positive impact. The review categorizes these influences as direct (e.g. censorship), indirect (e.g. steering through funding preferences), and subtle (e.g. unconscious shifts in researcher behavior due to political expectations). The authors do not suggest that governments should not fund research. Instead, they call for 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺𝘀, 𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 to ensure that research integrity is not compromised in the pursuit of policy relevance. As public health challenges become increasingly complex, the integrity of the #evidence base is paramount. This review serves as a wake-up call for funders, researchers, and policymakers alike to develop systems that support both rigorous research and effective #PublicPolicy, without compromising one for the other.

ICMR-NIN Scientists Accused Of Faking Pesticide Research Using ₹41 Lakh Public Funds Scientific integrity is non-negotiable especially when public health and taxpayer money are at stake. A serious case of alleged research misconduct has emerged from the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad, where a senior scientist, Dr. S.N. Sinha, and PhD scholar Dileshwar Kumar (CSIR fellow, Osmania University) are accused of fabricating data across six pesticide-related research papers funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). According to the NGO CENTEGRO (Centre for Environment and Agriculture), the ₹41.47 lakh project titled “Neurobehavioral and biogenic amines manifestations in agricultural populations exposed to organophosphate insecticides” was never actually executed in the field or lab. Instead, all associated publications are alleged to be based on manufactured data. 📄 One of the papers has been retracted; the others remain in circulation, potentially misleading future research and policy. 🧾 CENTEGRO's RTI-based report cites: No trace of fieldwork or lab validation Contradictions with established toxicology principles Dual funding misuse from both ICMR and CSIR 💬 “This is not just academic dishonesty. People in my team received repeated messages from a site called "vision-science" promoting a troubling “collaboration” model. Researchers are invited to write a full paper themselves, while an external “researcher” who does not contribute to the study or the publication process would be added as first (preferred) or second author. In return, the actual authors receive a payment meant to cover part of the APCs. This practice violates fundamental authorship standards. It targets early-career researchers and colleagues from institutions with limited publication funding, and it undermines scientific integrity by treating authorship as a tradable good. I am sharing this because transparency is one of the few tools we have against such practices. Friends, I’m not trying to be topical by bringing Epstein up again, truly. I am honestly just shocked that we are not having a more public, profession-wide conversation about ethics in philanthropy. Maybe I’m missing the right forums or working groups (and if I am, please point me there — I mean that). But from where I sit, I’m seeing far more silence and business-as-usual than reflection and recalibration. We’re watching situations unfold where legitimate research, conferences, and institutional initiatives were funded (or aimed to be funded) through philanthropic channels later revealed to be deeply problematic. In many cases, the work itself had nothing to do with wrongdoing. The intent to advance science, health, or knowledge was real. Yet people are finding their names, projects, and affiliations caught in reputational shockwaves they never anticipated. (And I know many of these folks!) That alone should prompt a field-level ethical reckoning. I’ve been talking with clients about two lenses that help clarify this: Lens one: Generosity is primal. The human impulse to give, to help, to build, to advance well-being — this is intrinsic. Cross-cultural research shows cooperation and generosity are part of how our species survives and thrives. Philanthropy, at its best, grows from that wiring. Lens two: Money is a social construct. Currency is not primal — it’s a system layered with power, access, history, and distortion. This is where things get complicated. This is where due diligence, source of funds, influence, and moral risk live. This is where the “ick” people feel around philanthropy often originates. The ethical breakdown is rarely in the sincere researcher seeking funding, the organizer seeking sponsorship, or the institution seeking support for meaningful work. The breakdown happens when: • due diligence is thin • prestige overrides scrutiny • access replaces accountability • funding is accepted faster than it is examined There is also a larger systemic story that deserves interrogation — how wealth is created, legitimized, and integrated into respected institutions over time. It’s uncomfortable, but avoiding it doesn’t make it go away. (I’m reminded of shows like Peaky Blinders, where the ultimate aim of criminal enterprise was legitimacy…this is actually a very common story…also worthy of discussion.) If we work in philanthropy — especially in higher ed, health, and large institutional settings — I believe we have a duty of care to examine this openly. Not to become cynical. Not to shut down generosity. But to protect its integrity. If serious frameworks and field-wide conversations are already happening, I’d genuinely welcome being pointed to them.
