By bridging the digital divide, Solidaridad is empowering over a million farmers with contextual, personalized advisories that address their unique challenges. From real-time hyper-local weather forecasts and pest infestation alerts to tailored agronomic advice, this initiative is equipping farmers with tools to make informed decisions, boost productivity, and mitigate risks in an unpredictable climate. The Smart Agri Hub exemplifies innovation in action. By leveraging mobile platforms and IoT-enabled solutions, farmers receive timely insights—like adjusting irrigation before a drought or treating crops ahead of pest outbreaks—transforming reactive practices into proactive strategies. This digital ecosystem not only safeguards livelihoods but also fosters resilience, enabling smallholders to thrive amid climate volatility. The visit also included the Nico Roozen International Center of Excellence for Regenerative Agriculture, a hub pioneering sustainable farming practices. Here, research and on-ground training converge to promote soil health, biodiversity, and low-carbon techniques, ensuring agriculture remains viable for future generations. None of this would be possible without the visionary leadership of Dr.Suresh Motwani and his dedicated team, whose passion for farmer welfare and environmental stewardship is palpable. AI vs Agtech in Agriculture – Why the Difference Matters for IFC Investments In the last few weeks I've been in several conversations about digital transformation in agriculture and found that AI and Agtech are often used interchangeably. For those of you designing large-scale investment and technical assistance programs for farmers in developing economies, the distinction is critical. Here’s how I see it from an IFC perspective: Agtech: - Any technology that improves agricultural productivity, efficiency, or sustainability. Examples: Drip irrigation systems, improved seed varieties, mobile weather apps, mechanized planters. These are often tangible, visible, and can work without large datasets. AI in Agriculture: - This is a small, but growing, subset of agtech that uses machine learning, computer vision, predictive analytics, or natural language processing to generate insights, automate decisions, or adapt recommendations over time. Examples: AI pest detection apps, yield prediction models, AI-driven irrigation scheduling, AI-driven agronomy support. This is data-driven, adaptive, and often “invisible” to the farmer. The difference matters for IFC and our partners: - Smallholders (2–10 ha) adopt tangible agtech first — they can only layer AI services once trust, data flows, and connectivity are in place. - Commercial farmers can more easily integrate AI into advanced agtech to improve efficiency, traceability, and competitiveness. - For both, AI can optimize agtech use — making irrigation more precise, soil management more targeted, and pest control more timely and both are essential for global food security, employment and economic development. Their financial success, (re)investment and growth delivers impact at a global scale. Scaling AI in our partner countries means investing in data infrastructure, local capacity building, and partnerships to localize models, and this has a long way to go in many of our focus countries in Africa and parts of Asia. The data that underpins foundation models in much of the world is not locally sourced or appropriate. The homogenous data we use for simple text creation or answering our search queries will not deliver accuracy to a farmer in Niger seeking guidance on what to plant in her field, nor one in Indonesia needing to plan for a pest or disease that may impact his crop later this year. As we build these systems in a responsible and equitable way we all need to guide the development of models, improve underlying data and introduce technologies fit for purpose, that can help not harm. With the sun still rising over the cornfields, I stood beside Casey in Philo, Illinois, assessing the massive planter that would sow this season’s crop. His tractor was fitted with AI-powered tools - retrofitted onto decades-old equipment, calibrated through trial and error, adapted piece by piece to meet the realities of his land. In rural America, AI isn’t as abstract as headlines and sci-fi futures. It’s already reshaping who can farm, how they operate, and whether they can compete with industrial-scale agriculture. In a recent op-ed for The News-Gazette, I reflected on my time visiting farmers, Agricultural Sciences departments, and farm bureaus across central Illinois and what this moment means for the next generation of farmers. The dynamics are clear: Large, well-resourced farms are using AI to optimize decisions across planting, inputs, and yield. But small and family-run operations face a very different landscape: high barriers to entry, limited digital infrastructure, and justified skepticism about whether these technologies were ever built with them in mind. 🌽 Over 96% of U.S. farms are family-owned, yet most ag-tech investment is aimed at large-scale operations. 📉 Fewer than one in four small farms have access to even basic digital tools, let alone adaptable AI systems. 🌧 For many, a single season of drought, disease, or market volatility can force a permanent exit. In my journey within this sector, I’ve witnessed how digital tools are reshaping what’s possible, not just in terms of efficiency but in how we create value for our stakeholders and contribute to sustainability. The trends emerging today are redefining our future. Take precision agriculture, for example. The integration of IoT, AI, and GPS is empowering farmers with unprecedented precision. Real-time data from fields now guides decisions, ensuring that fertilizers and pesticides are applied exactly where and when they’re needed. The result? Less waste, better yields, and a step forward in sustainable farming. Generative AI and data analytics are accelerating innovation in ways we couldn’t have imagined a decade ago. By tracking products from farm to fork, we are enhancing food safety, building consumer trust, and strengthening the integrity of our supply chains. From material handling to predictive maintenance, these technologies are reducing downtime and ensuring we meet demand, even in the face of challenges. And we can’t overlook the power of digital twins. These virtual replicas of physical systems are giving us real-time insights into our operations, enabling better decision-making and fostering deeper collaboration with our partners and customers. From rice fields to global carts: how TikTok shop is transforming vietnamese agriculture Vietnam’s agricultural sector is undergoing a quiet revolution. For decades, small producers were dependent on intermediaries to reach global markets. Today, digital platforms like TikTok Shop are changing that dynamic — with measurable impact. During the Vietnamese Agricultural Product Week, 50 livestreams of specialty fruits led to nearly 10,000 orders in just 72 hours. Another 60 livestreams of OCOP and handicraft products generated over 12,500 orders. The format works: high engagement, fast conversion, and scalable exposure. Since 2024, the number of Vietnamese agricultural products listed online has grown by 30%. By 2028, experts project Vietnam’s online export value to reach $5.8 billion. More than 13,000 OCOP products are now live on digital platforms, with international reach. Amazon has highlighted three promising categories for Vietnamese producers: dried fruits and vegetables, spices, and tea. Meanwhile, companies like DH Foods and NewBam are showing that small brands — when certified, well-packaged and market-oriented — can gain traction in mature markets like the US, Europe, and Japan. Why it matters: Cross-border e-commerce reduces the role of intermediaries, improves access to consumer data, and accelerates international brand building. With a digital-first mindset, even smaller producers can move up the value chain. Learnings for European players: Vietnam shows that with the right platform partnerships, deep product knowledge, and export readiness, even traditional sectors like agriculture can unlock new growth. Well, their solution combines satellite imagery and drone data to create comprehensive farm assessments without setting foot on the land. Then, advanced AI algorithms analyse this data to generate customised recommendations for: · Precise soil nutrient management based on soil composition analysis. · Optimal irrigation scheduling using predictive moisture modelling. · Weather-based planting decisions from pattern recognition. · Early pest and disease detection through image analysis. 👉🏻 What makes this truly amazing? They delivered these insights in local languages like Marathi. This made advanced agricultural science easily accessible to farmers. And the results speak volumes: • Sugarcane grew THREE TIMES larger than conventional methods. • Successful cultivation of exotic crops like strawberries and dragon fruit. • Income increased by up to 10X for small-scale farmers. What sets this initiative apart is their deliberate focus on farmers with less than two acres of land – those who traditionally get left behind in technological revolutions. This exemplifies what I believe about the future of AI – it creates a golden era for all those people who have a compelling vision, care about solving real-world problems, and have the persistence to make things happen. Over the past 3 years, I have visited farmers in China, Italy, and Egypt. In every country, one thing stood out—they don’t guess. They farm with data. Precise. Timely. Actionable. In China, I met greenhouse tomato farmers using sensors to monitor humidity, temperature, and soil moisture. Every irrigation cycle is based on real-time data. No water is wasted. Yields are consistent. In Italy, olive growers use drones and satellite data to map tree health, identify disease early, and plan their harvest to perfection. In Egypt, large farms in the desert rely on smart irrigation systems connected to data dashboards that track rainfall, sunlight, and soil nutrients. These farmers don’t treat agriculture as a gamble. They treat it as a science. And I kept asking myself: Why not Africa? Africa is home to 60% of the world’s arable land. But many farmers still rely on tradition and guesswork. I believe this is the moment to change that. Data-driven agriculture could be the single most powerful shift in how African farmers produce food. Think about this: A smallholder maize farmer in Rwanda using a mobile app to know exactly when to plant based on weather forecasts. A dairy farmer in Kenya tracking milk output using digital tags on cows. A cocoa farmer in Ghana receiving real-time market prices and fertilizer advice via SMS. These are no longer dreams. These tools already exist. The question is—how do we scale them? It starts with building digital infrastructure. Governments must invest in rural internet, weather stations, and open agricultural data platforms. Policies must support innovation. Not block it. Private companies and startups have a huge role. They can build mobile apps, data dashboards, precision farming tools, and sensor technologies tailored to small farms. NGOs can step in to train farmers and ensure these tools are not just available—but understood. When farmers can access and interpret data, they can: Reduce input waste. Predict pests and diseases. Know the best time to plant and harvest. Make smarter financial decisions. Data is not just numbers. Data is power. I think of data as the new hoe. The new fertilizer. The new seed. It gives farmers confidence. It gives buyers transparency. It gives governments the insights needed to plan for food security. Data is how we will turn farming from survival to strategy. From unpredictable to profitable. And just like we extract oil and minerals, we must learn to extract insights from data. The future of African farming will not be built on land alone. 2025 Is the Year of the Marketplace Gravity Well The data could not be clearer and it should fundamentally reshape how every ecommerce leader thinks about growth in 2025. As the graphic shows, nearly every major ecommerce subcategory is losing traffic year over year, while marketplaces are the only segment still expanding at scale. Fashion, home, electronics, groceries, beauty, jewelry and luxury are all seeing contraction in direct traffic. Meanwhile, marketplaces sit in a completely different quadrant: positive growth, massive volume and accelerating dominance. This is not a temporary anomaly. It is a structural shift. Consumers are consolidating behavior. Discovery, price comparison, fulfillment trust, also returns are increasingly centralized. The result: traffic gravity is pulling demand toward platforms that aggregate supply, data, logistics, attention. Brands betting exclusively on owned-and-operated ecommerce are now competing not just with peers, but with Amazon, Walmart, Alibaba.com, JD.COM, Mercado Libre, Shopee, Lazada, Flipkart, Rakuten, Zalando, Temu, SHEIN, TikTok Shop and increasingly Meta and Google surfaces themselves. Marketplaces are winning because they: - Control first-touch discovery - Optimize conversion through scale-driven UX - Own logistics expectations (speed, cost, reliability) - Leverage data flywheels no single brand can replicate - Capture repeat behavior through ecosystem lock-in Meanwhile, vertical-specific ecommerce - whether in apparel, consumer electronics, groceries or beauty - is paying the price for rising CAC, fragmented attention and declining organic reach. Even premium and luxury segments are no longer immune. This does not mean brand.com is dead. It means brand.com is no longer the growth engine by default. Winning strategies in 2025 look different: - Marketplace-first assortment and launch strategies - Selective DTC used for loyalty, storytelling and margin defense - Performance media optimized for marketplace conversion, not just site traffic - Content and commerce convergence across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and retail media networks - Operational excellence built around omnichannel fulfillment and inventory fluidity The brands and retailers that adapt fastest will not ask „Should we be on marketplaces?” They will ask „How do we win within them without losing our brand?” Because the data is already telling us the answer: Traffic is concentrating.
