    Nature's Hacks for Success. Biomimicry might sound complex, but it's simply about learning from nature to enhance our designs. It's like learning from the best teacher, Mother Nature herself. Defined by the Biomimicry Institute, this approach guides us toward sustainable solutions by mimicking perfected patterns and strategies found in nature. Nature has already solved many of our challenges. So, why not apply its genius to our packaging designs? It offers patterns and relationships that inspire better, eco-friendly packaging designs. Whether in structure or materials, designers can draw from nature's beauty, texture, and flow. We discover materials that are waterproof, breathable, flexible, and more. It's as if nature has already completed the heavy lifting of innovation, evolution, and adaptation for us. Think of the honeycomb structure in beehives, not only sturdy but also space-efficient. A great example of biomimicry in packaging design is the SIS bottle by Backbone Branding. Their designers draw inspiration from a flower's pistil to shape a two-litre juice bottle. The design not only stands out with its natural juice colour but also resolves many stacking, storage, and merchandising challenges through its interlocking form. Rooted in geometry with equilateral triangles, these bottles fit snugly together, saving space. Every aspect of the bottle, from its size and proportions to its lines and curves, has been carefully considered. Even the label has been specially designed to adhere to the bottle's irregular surface, eliminating the need for glue. Consider adding nature's strategy into your design process. It will help you close the loop and build a solution that resonates with the ecosystem we breathe in.     This startup has found a way to make biodegradable furniture that returns to soil in 180 days! Furniture waste is an environmental problem that is not discussed at length or often enough! Conventional furniture relies on MDF, plywood, laminates, adhesives, and plastics. These materials are hard to recycle, release toxins when burned, and can remain in landfills for decades. As a result, most discarded furniture has only one destination: permanent waste! Reading through a September 2025 article by The Better India, I found that Bhakti V Loonawat and Suyash Sawant, architects and founders of ANOMALIA, are crafting furniture from mycelium, the root network of fungi. What I found very interesting … 📍Agricultural waste that would otherwise be burned or dumped is repurposed. 📍The material could substitute for boards made from timber, reducing pressure on forests. 📍At the end of its life, the product can biodegrade fully within 180 days, returning nutrients to the soil instead of adding to landfill volume. Each block of the material weighs just 1.5 kg, yet can withstand 1.5 tons of compressive load. The couple started experimenting during the pandemic, growing mushrooms in cupcake trays. By September 2022, they launched Anomalia in Mumbai. 📌Their work has since travelled to the Venice Biennale 2025 and Seoul, where they presented a 4-metre mycelium facade. 📌In India, they have sold nearly 100 blocks across Mumbai and Surat. I believe that for the design industry, materials like mycelium offer a practical path forward in reducing their carbon footprint and in product circularity.     🌿 Learning to Design More Sustainably: Insights from an Eco-Product Expert In the rapidly evolving fashion industry, sustainability is moving from a niche concern to a core component of product design. As an eco-product expert, my mission is to guide and inspire brands towards more environmentally friendly practices, beginning right at the design stage. This commitment to sustainability is crucial because every decision in product design reverberates through the entire lifecycle of an item. 👖 Consider the anatomy of a simple garment, such as a pair of jeans. An attached image vividly breaks down the numerous components involved: from threads, buttons, and rivets to denim, labels, and dyes. Each component is an opportunity for sustainable innovation. 🔩 Take, for instance, the button. Traditionally, jean buttons are a challenge for recycling due to their permanent attachment. By redesigning the button as a screw-on, we not only facilitate easy removal at the end of the garment's life, enhancing recyclability, but also allow the button to be reused on another item, thereby extending its lifecycle and reducing waste. 🌱 Moving to the fabric itself, denim is typically cotton-based, which is water and chemical-intensive. An alternative like hemp can drastically reduce the environmental footprint as it requires significantly less water and fewer chemicals. Incorporating such materials into designs is not just about substituting one for another; it’s about rethinking the system to prioritise ecological balance. ♻️ Consider also the leather-like labels often found on jeans. These are usually made from plastics and are purely decorative. Eliminating these and opting for water-based ink prints directly on the fabric can significantly reduce plastic use and the overall environmental impact. Similarly, shifting from conventional dyes to environmentally kinder options can mitigate pollution and enhance the sustainability of the production process. 🌍 As designers and product specialists, we have the power and responsibility to lead the charge in sustainable design. By analysing and rethinking each component of a product from an eco-design perspective, we can make profound contributions to sustainability. This approach not only helps in reducing the environmental impact but also aligns with the growing consumer demand for responsible and ethical products. 💡 By supporting innovation and challenging traditional manufacturing processes, we can transform how products are designed, produced, and perceived.     What if the strongest “wood” in a space did not come from a tree? What if it started as an olive pit on a farm in Cyprus? Every year, tons of olive waste quietly pile up after oil production. For most of us, it is invisible. For a few material innovators, it has become the starting point for some of the densest, toughest boards used in furniture and interiors. Scientists have shown that when olive stones are transformed into composites, they can boost stiffness, hardness, and durability compared to many conventional fillers. This is the kind of circular story that rarely makes headlines, yet it changes how we think about “waste.” Olive pits, once a disposal problem, become high performance surfaces in hospitality, retail, and residential projects. Designers get a material with character and strength; local economies get more value from existing harvests; the planet gets less pressure on forests and landfills.     Green Offices Are Not a Trend. They’re an Audit. (And most workplaces are failing it.) We’ve all seen it - the moss walls, the bamboo desks, the token potted plant. Pretty? Sure. Sustainable? Barely. Let’s be clear: “Green design” isn’t a vibe. It’s a responsibility. Real sustainable office design is measurable, auditable and impactful. If it can’t lower emissions, save energy, improve human health and reduce landfill waste, it’s just decoration with good PR. Here’s what real green design looks like: 1. Material Choices Matter If it’s not FSC-certified, low-VOC, or cradle-to-cradle, it’s greenwashing. Demand better from your vendors. Beware: “eco‑friendly” veneer over particleboard still hides glue with formaldehyde. Real sustainability comes from certified FSC/PEFC timber, recycled steel, low-VOC paints, and biobased composites. 2. Energy Isn’t Just LED Bulbs Think daylight harvesting, high-performance glazing, on-site renewables and HVAC intelligence. Half-measures don’t cut emissions. Real change starts with: Daylight harvesting: sensors, skylights, smart dimming. On-site renewables + smart microgrids: solar doesn’t just power lights—it feeds storage and HVAC, optimizes peak loads, balances with EV charging. 3. Health Isn’t Optional No more plastic plants and filtered air labeled “premium.” You deserve natural ventilation, living greenery, circadian lighting and acoustic comfort. Prioritize: Natural ventilation (with air-quality sensors to back it up). Biophilic design - real plants, not plastic. Bonus: proven to reduce stress, improve cognition. Thermal comfort, acoustic control, circadian lighting because productivity isn’t just about Wi‑Fi speed. 4. Waste Is Designed In (or Out) Modular builds, circular take-back systems, zero landfill construction sites because “out of sight” is NOT “out of impact.” Think: Modular systems – walls, desks, lighting fixtures that can be disassembled, reconfigured, reused. Take‑back schemes – partner with suppliers to reclaim old furniture and materials. Construction waste audits – >90% diversion isn’t bragging—it’s baseline target. 5. If You Can’t Measure It, It’s Not Sustainable Certifications, carbon dashboards, water audits, sustainability reports - data is the new design language. Use: BREEAM/LEED, Fitwel, WELL standards. Real-time dashboards for energy, water, waste, indoor air quality. Annual sustainability reports with carbon budgeting and progress reviews. So here’s the uncomfortable truth: Most “green” offices are marketing exercises dressed as environmental responsibility. At Flipspaces, we don’t design just for Instagram.     Carbon isn’t the only problem. And sometimes, it’s not even the biggest one. So, what should you focus on? 💡Start by understanding the main problem in your product category: 👕 Apparel → water depletion & microplastic pollution 🔴A low-carbon T-shirt that requires 10,000+ liters of water contributes to water use issues. 🔴Synthetic fibers shed microplastics, which impact marine and freshwater ecotoxicity. 📱 Electronics → human toxicity & resource depletion 🔴That "eco-friendly" smartphone might have a low carbon footprint but still drive mineral resource scarcity due to rare earth mining. 🔴Toxic chemicals in circuit boards and batteries contribute to human toxicity and ecosystem toxicity when dumped. 📦 Packaging → land use & end-of-life impact 🔴A ‘carbon-neutral’ plastic wrapper that sits in a landfill for 500 years? That’s not sustainability, that’s just delayed pollution. 🔴Paper alternatives?
