An interesting paradox to me is happening in SEO: Google's AI overview is simultaneously the worst thing to happen to web traffic (massive overreaction) as well as a feature that Google has used to index for years. We're seeing a tortoise vs hare situation play out in real life. The tortoise is staying the course with their SEO and continuing best practices. The hare is trying to "game the system" and "get ahead with GEO". We know who is going to win. #SEO #tradesmarketing

SEO is dead; long live SEO! 🔍 The way that users find content is changing forever. But it's as important as ever that content be relevant, well-structured, and readily accessed by discovery tools. If anything, AI pathways to content help strip away "hacks" like keyword stuffing and bring discovery back to basics. In today's The Scholarly Kitchen article, Kristina Henrikson and I tackled the topic of SEO, including how it's changed, where it could be going, and what marketing teams can do now to futureproof their strategies. https://lnkd.in/epWZqAU3

Wait, tuna chunking content isn't a good idea? :) Good episode of SOTR with John and Danny -> Google: Don't Turn Your Content Into Bite-Sized Chunks From Danny: "One of the things I keep seeing over and over in some of the advice and guidance and people are trying to figure out what do we do with the LLMs or whatever, is that you should turn your content into bite-sized chunks, because LLMs like things that are really bite-sized, right? So, we DON'T want you to do that. I was talking to some (Search) engineers about that. We don't want you to do that. We really don't." And more from Danny how this can play out: "Let's assume that in some edge cases you're finding you're getting some advantage here. That's what's happening now, but tomorrow the systems may change. So you've gone through all this effort. You've made all these things that you did specifically for a ranking system, and not for a human. And then the systems improve, probably the way the systems always try to improve, to reward content written for humans. All that stuff that you did to please this LLM system that may or may not have worked, may not carry through for the long term."

If a report shows 93 leads and does not mention that 41 records were removed, the reader is being asked to trust both the number and every invisible decision behind it. Filtering out sales solicitations is uncontroversial. SEO agencies, staffing firms, software vendors: they arrive through exactly the same channels as real inquiries, trigger the same conversion events, and in most reporting they are counted as leads. Nobody argues with removing them. What almost nobody does is show how many were removed. One line changes that entirely. "93 new leads. 41 records excluded as sales solicitations." Now the filter is auditable. If the excluded count jumps from 12 to 60 next month, someone will ask why. Either inbound changed or the filter changed. Both matter. Without the number displayed, a filter can drift for a year. Every judgement call gets made under mild pressure in the same direction, and nobody can tell. The rule applies everywhere: deduplication, missing data days, source failures. If something was removed, say how much.
