You're not wrong about the interview process; that said, most software development positions seem to fit well into AI's rapidly growing wheelhouse. There will probably always be a need for a small number of highly specialized (or maybe broad spectrum generalist) engineers, but 20 years from now I think a career in software design and development will be much less viable than it is today.

In my last two posts, I talked about the difference between playing chess and being the board—between strategic, human-like reasoning and emergent, structure-based intelligence. But here’s the uncomfortable follow-up: We’re already building systems optimized for the second kind. Transformer models don’t explain themselves. Reinforcement learners don’t justify their decisions. Search algorithms surface what works—not why it works. And yet, we use them. We deploy them in customer support, recommendation engines, diagnostics, trading, hiring. We wrap them in clean APIs and assume they’re “smart enough.” But what does that mean for us as engineers? • Can you optimize something you don’t really understand? • Can you validate outcomes when the strategy is invisible? • What happens when these systems fail—not catastrophically, but subtly, consistently, untraceably? This isn’t just a tooling question. It’s a design philosophy question. Sometimes, intelligence that works without explanation is fine. Ant colonies don’t file postmortems. But when human lives, trust, or long-term systems are involved—we need to ask harder questions. In the future, we won’t choose one kind of intelligence—we’ll learn to navigate between them. And the essential skill won’t just be in building what works, but in knowing when understanding must come with it. Because if we don’t understand what we’re optimizing for, we might get exactly what we asked for—and still lose the game—the same fate as Nathan (the creator of Ava) in Ex Machina, the film I’ve been referencing throughout these posts. #SoftwareEngineering #AIPhilosophy #EmergentIntelligence #Interpretability #FutureOfAI

Jeremy Holovacs liked thisJeremy Holovacs liked thisFeeling Nostalgic for some reason, decided to share some Advertising.com stories from my perspective. Many people don't know this, but Scott literally predicted the acquisition of Advertising.com by AOL to me in a private 1:1 meeting we had back in December of 1998. The company was barely two months old at the time when some former clients of mine came along and offered us $10 million dollars for the company. Scott would not even speak with them. I was incredulous. I was 24 at the time, potentially receiving $5 million dollars for 2 months worth of work, and my brother wouldnt even take a phone call with them. When i asked him why. - He said John - If we can accomplish A, and B, and C (I'll spare explaining what those were), a company LIKE AOL will come along and WANT to acquire us for $500,000,000 in 5 years. That was enough to convince me to stick around and continue to build what was built. You have to give Scott some credit for his incredible prescience in his prediction - whereas he was within .2 percent of the amount, he was off by 1 year, many years later, when I asked him why, he said he had not predicted the ".com Crash" would have occured and that in essence set us back a year. A huge thanks to everyone who "Made it Happen" back then and incredibly to those who continue to carry the torch today, and those who found success in a myriad of ways on their own, as well as the newly "resurrected" Advertising.com brand!!

This is a huge step forward, giving children another option while helping to ease the impact of ongoing drug shortages. “One of the most important things we do is make sure our patients and their families are heard,” shares Dr. Gwen Nichols, LLS Chief Medical Officer. “We’ll keep working with leaders, drug companies, and advocates to make sure patients get the medications they need.” Get all the details 👉 https://bit.ly/3WiedeR

A survey of 300 enterprise security and engineering leaders found AI coding tools are adding open-source components to company systems faster than security teams can check them for flaws, licensing problems or abandoned maintenance. That backlog of unreviewed code sits inside the software running banks, hospitals and government services, and researchers expect the gap to widen as AI tools generate more code with less human oversight. The visible effect for you is mundane: more outages, more errors, more services down for reasons nobody explains. 🚑 #CyberNewsLive https://lnkd.in/gKQRSnPY
