Jeremy Deane liked thisI often use the word “grace” to remind myself to look at the root cause rather than the symptoms.Jeremy Deane liked this"I want you to come in and clean house"..... This is what his boss said on his first day of his new job. A resume client of ours accepted a Vice President of Sales position with a $255K base salary (25K more than he was asking for). At no point during the interview was he told his first order of business would be to fire the entire team (thus the extra $$). If it were me, I probably would have walked out, lol. But he didn't. He asked his new boss for a 30 day moratorium so he could assess the 11 member team to see why they were considered "under-performers." He met with the team, told them their jobs were on the line & he would give them the chance to fight for their jobs. Here is what he found.... - - 3 were working territories long distances away from their home offices, adding 3 to 4 hours of commute time per day... - - 2 were single parents that could not commit to after hours events and meetings. - - 4 were new staff that had no training beyond a few days orientation. - - 2 were seriously bad hires with bad attitudes. He went to his boss and told him he could save 9 of the 11 by restructuring territories, personally handling training/development & minimizing after hours meetings and events. His boss reluctantly agreed. Now, this team is extraordinarily loyal to him and outperforming their peers. Leadership starts at the top. It is not about discipline, firing, bullying staff or egos. Over the past few weeks, I had the opportunity to attend a couple of matches with my family, from cheering on France against Norway to experiencing the excitement of the final. Beyond the incredible football, what I'll remember most is the atmosphere. For a few hours, tens of thousands of people from every corner of the world become part of one shared experience. Different languages, different cultures, different teams, all united by a love of the game. Watching the tournament reinforced something that applies just as much outside the stadium. The best teams aren't simply collections of great individual talent. They prepare relentlessly, trust one another, adapt when the game changes, and keep competing when the outcome is uncertain. The final was a perfect example. After more than 100 minutes of extraordinary football, Spain found the winning goal in the 106th minute. One moment changed everything. It was a reminder that great teams stay composed, keep believing, and are ready when opportunity comes. Success isn't built in a single moment. It's built over time through preparation, resilience, and the trust teammates place in one another. Whether in sport, business, or life, that's a lesson worth carrying long after the final whistle. It's astonishing how many problems in software can be reduced to a semantics problem. Think through what logically follows when we adopt both the tooling AND the mindset, and expand it to how we think about building software... Jeremy Deane liked thisJeremy Deane liked thisThe Semantic Ceiling... You're already feeling it. It's when your AI suddenly fumbles on a simple task that it nailed on the last five turns. It's when your AI says "You're right! That rule is right here. I missed it. That's on me." It's the agent you still can't trust. The next model won't fix it. It's not Claude, it's you. Your data lacks the most essential ingredient for intelligence: meaning. The solution is what Gartner is calling "a universal semantic layer." In their words it is "critical infrastructure" a "must-do" and "the only way to improve accuracy, manage costs, substantially cut AI debt, align multiagent systems, and stop costly inconsistencies before they spread." (https://lnkd.in/gQsQmwwz) Few people know what this means, and now the industry is scrambling to invent something to fill the void. The "winner" will ultimately be a vendor who wants to own YOUR technology ecosystem. And they will if you buy into their hype. But semantics isn't something you invent. It's something you express. And we already know how to do that. We built it. It's a solved problem. It's universal, ready now, and it's free. The new thought leaders will soon be crowding your feeds with the word "ontology." The consultants will try to talk you into multi-million dollar enterprise ontology projects and centralized knowledge graph boondoggles. It doesn't have to be that way. What we already have is much simpler than that--and more powerful. It's a single, coherent stack based on mature and battle-tested W3C open standards. It's designed for the web, which means it's designed to be decentralized yet still harmonize at internet-scale. Don't start with an enterprise ontology. Start with one API that expresses JSON-LD (part of the W3C semantic stack). You can do that right now with zero breaking changes. Define the context of that json payload so meaning is rooted in more than just vibes. That's where it all starts, connecting meaning to your data in motion. You don't need an ontology engineer or a multi-million dollar "initiative". You just need one json doc that knows what it means. It's as simple as taking the one you already have and linking it to a layer of meaning. It will grow from there. That's more than $2.3bn committed in a matter of months: - Foundation Medicine → SAGA Diagnostics - up to $595m - CareDx, Inc. → Naveris, Inc. - up to $260m - Tempus AI → Personalis, Inc. - $1.5bn Tempus had already invested in Personalis and commercialised NeXT Personal so this isn't 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 a new entrance into MRD. But it does seem to be a decision that the tech is valuable enough to own outright… And these are far from the only major players now positioned in MRD: - Foundation Medicine / Roche - FoundationOne MRD - CareDx, Inc. - NavDx - Natera - Signatera - Guardant Health - Reveal - Tempus AI / Personalis, Inc. - NeXT Personal - Exact Sciences - Oncodetect - NeoGenomics Laboratories - RaDaR ST - Myriad Genetics - Precise MRD - Labcorp - Plasma Detect - Quest Diagnostics - Haystack MRD - Adaptive Biotechnologies Corp. - clonoSEQ, focused on blood cancers - Illumina - WGS-based MRD kit expected in 2027 - ARUP Laboratories - CLARISPECT, MRD in MM(launched yesterday!) With almost every major oncology Dx company now building, buying or already commercialising an MRD test… perhaps the next phase is now about who can turn the science into reimbursement and adoption at scale? With this much activity - who will be next to build or buy an MRD platform? Congrats to the Personalis, Inc. team - a great outcome and a testament to the work they have been doing in scaling NeXT Personal!
