James Bellamy shared thisWith the NFL season kicking off today, Similarweb's data on sports betting in the USA shows DraftKings is the clear leader in an industry likely to see strong demand this month if historical trends continue. Key takeaways: 🏆 DraftKings has the most monthly visitors in 2022 (through August), averaging 14.1 million visitors per month. It also leads peers in unique visitors per month (4.4 million) in pages per visit (8.3) and in visit duration, at almost thirteen minutes per session on average (12:40). 🌐 FanDuel, in second place in monthly visitors (10.9 million) year to date, and is second in visit duration (11:54). FanDuel also sports the lowest bounce rate 30.0% (bounce rate is the percentage of visitors that leave after only visiting a single web page). BetMGM has the worst bounce rate at 44.7%. 🏈 Traffic in August 2022 is down for the three largest peers we looked at (DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM), but was up from July. We would expect to see a big spike in traffic in September, in line with historical trends, as the NFL season kicks off. Considering online sports betting is quite new to the USA market, after legislation changes a couple years ago it'll be interesting to compare to the industry here in Australia with it being so established and engrained in our sporting culture.

James Bellamy shared thisI was at the pub a couple weeks ago (let’s pretend it wasn’t on a school night for Adrian Burrell's sake) and saw a sign advertising Melbourne Cup functions, this surprised me and felt a bit like when see hot cross buns on the shelves at Coles in February. Which got me thinking, how early does Melbourne Cup chatter usually start? I ran a keyword analysis on ‘Melbourne Cup’ and before the pandemic, lockdowns and all that fun stuff, the Melbourne cup conversation tended to kick off in early August. The following 2 years we wouldn’t see this until deeper into Spring. We're constantly looking for signs that we're back to our pre-pandemic norms. It may be a small one but if my locals' already taking bookings for the race in November I guess we'll chalk that up as a win. #similarweb #melbournecup #keywordanalysis

James Bellamy shared thisIt's been 2-months since moving into a new apartment & we still have milk crates as a TV stand, mattress is on the floor & eat every meal hunched over the coffee table. Hoping it might inspire me or lead me to some good deals, I used Similarweb to see what the wider Australian public is buying at the moment. The top trending furniture/homewares items in July are: - sofa bed - queen bed frame - entertainment unit I was surprised to see ‘sofa bed’ as the most in demand furniture item in Australia. I guess this is due to travel being more accessible again and people are preparing for a summer of couch surfing relatives (just a hunch 🤷♂️). Even though a sofa bed isn’t on my list of missing furniture, I wondered who is selling all these sofa beds? So I ran a keyword analysis in Similarweb to find out who’s getting the traffic for the keyword ‘sofa bed’. Leading the charge was: #1: Amart Furniture #2: IKEA #3: Temple & Webster Armed with this, using website segment analysis I can zoom in on a brand's particular line of business. So I picked 7 businesses, zeroed in on the sofa bed specific section of their site and added them to a report for comparison. Below you can see all Australian desktop traffic for July that was directed to the sofa bed segment of popular furniture stores sites. The heat map represents the percentage of visits that came from a particular marketing channel. Interesting to see paid search playing such a big role for some businesses, seems like some were expecting this consumer demand and planned accordingly. #similarweb #segments #marketingchannels

This got me wondering what is happening here in Australia, which lead me to this article, posted 02/08/2022: https://lnkd.in/g8dzp3vA I jumped on Similarweb and using the keyword generator I compiled a list of approx. 80 variations of traffic generating 'Lab Diamond' keywords for analysis. To say the announcement this article mentions created a ripple effect is an understatement….. Looking at Australian desktop traffic on a weekly granularity over the last 28-days. You can see the instantaneous fragmentation of the market, going from very little activity to a huge change in not only marketing strategies but consumer behaviour too. #similarweb #marketingstrategy #consumerbehavior

What's going to define this skyline for the next 20 years? What project will people point to in 2045 and say - that's when the Gold Coast changed. I think we just found one. Two towers. 55 and 48 storeys. Connected by a skybridge on level 45, housing resident-only wellness and entertainment spaces. 275 residences on a 4,000sqm oceanfront site at Garfield Terrace. John Camilleri's Celestino Developments got Gold Coast City Council approval in five months. Five months from lodgement to green light on a twin-tower beachfront precinct. That alone tells you something about the conviction behind this project. But it's the skybridge at level 45 that tells you everything about where this market is heading. This isn't amenity as an afterthought, a rooftop pool tacked on to justify a price point. This is amenity as the architectural centrepiece. A sky-level connection between two towers, sitting above most of the Gold Coast skyline, designed exclusively for the people who live there. The buyers coming into this market aren't comparing it to other Gold Coast product anymore. They're comparing it to One Barangaroo. To St Regis Melbourne. To what's being delivered in Singapore and Dubai. And the Gold Coast is winning that comparison more often than people outside the market realise. Every project that follows on this corridor now gets measured against what Celestino is about to build on Garfield Terrace. That was the starting condition for Navi Mumbai International Airport, a $2 billion facility designed by Zaha Hadid Architects that will ultimately handle 90 million passengers a year. More than Changi. Let that sink in. They looked at a swamp and decided to build their answer to the world's best airport on top of it. I think about projects like this in the context of what I see across ANZ every week. We talk a lot about the complexity of our pipeline. Labour shortages. Material costs. Planning delays. Difficult sites. And those challenges are real. But the organisations that consistently deliver through complexity (in India, in China, in the Middle East, and here in Australia) share something in common that has nothing to do with the site conditions. They make decisions early, and they commit to them. The worst cost blowouts and programme failures I've seen in ANZ construction rarely come from the complexity itself. They come from late decisions. Scope creep nobody caught. Variations that should have been flagged in week two and weren't flagged until month six. Building on a swamp is hard. Nobody disputes that. But building on a swamp without real-time visibility of what's happening across your programme, your costs, and your subcontractor interfaces? That's where projects actually come undone. The engineering challenge at Navi Mumbai is extraordinary. The delivery challenge (maintaining coherence and accountability across a project of this scale and duration) is where the real story is. James Bellamy liked thisJames Bellamy liked thisLiving on the Central Coast, there's a small town called Ettalong Beach that hosts an Italian festival every year at a local galleria. It's nothing elaborate, yet special. Some food stalls. Live music. A piazza atmosphere that lasts a weekend. But I've been there. And I've seen what it does to a community, the pride, the connection, the way it pulls people together around something genuinely cultural rather than just commercial. What Max Panettiere and his family are building in Newstead is that feeling, at $1.5 billion and 1,000 apartments' worth of scale. Three towers. A cobblestoned piazza. Nineteen specialty shops. Espresso bars and pasta restaurants built into the ground floor of Brisbane's inner north. A genuine Italian precinct in a city that, as Max put it himself, has Chinatown and West End and somehow never had its own. The origin story is extraordinary. A property lawyer turned accidental concreter, repossessed pumps, a father bidding on the biggest concrete pump in Australia at auction, losing money on the Skytower basement job and coming out of it as the number one concrete pumper in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. That hands-on understanding of construction is exactly why Panettiere Developments is self-performing the $3 million basement excavation for $1.5 million. Six excavators. Six trucks and dogs. A diesel mechanic on staff. He's not managing this project from behind a desk. He's sold his house to live on site. That's not a developer playing at culture. That's a family building something they believe in at a level most people in this industry never reach. Brisbane's Italian community has been part of the fabric of Newstead and New Farm for generations. The annual St Joseph Festival in New Farm Park. The influence on the food, the architecture, and the character of the inner north. Little Italy isn't imported. It's coming home. And when that piazza opens (when Brisbane finally has the place Max sat at La Dolce Vita dreaming about), it's going to mean something that goes well beyond the property market. With robots tripling construction efficiency and cutting safety incidents by 90%. Meanwhile, Australia has been debating high-speed rail since 1984. I get the argument for starting small. Sydney to Newcastle by 2039 as a proof of concept. Build the business case. Demonstrate demand. But here's what that thinking gets wrong. Infrastructure at this scale isn't built for today's population. It's built for who we're becoming. Brisbane to Sydney to Melbourne is the fifth busiest air corridor in the world. The East Coast will have 30+ million people concentrated along it within two decades. And we're still flying that corridor in a tin can because the train alternative takes 11 hours. China didn't build Chongqing East for Chongqing's population in 2024. They built it for what the region is becoming, and they committed $90 billion worth of conviction to back that view. The B1M make a great point in this video about sustainability. Not every Chinese mega-project stacks up economically. Some of those bridges in Guizhou probably didn't need to be the tallest in the world. But an East Coast high-speed rail network? The demand is already there. It already exists. We're just moving it at 37,000 feet instead of 350 km/h. Australia builds big when it decides something matters. High Speed Rail Authority (Australia) along the East Coast matters.
