Evan Ferl shared this“As we heard these stories, we said, ‘Let’s figure out how to build a structure to involve multiple owners, multiple high-integrity partners… and really create something that is bigger together than the sum of our parts,” Ferl explained. You can put whatever you want in your linkedin tagline, but when I say we're building the alternative to private equity at California Pool Partners, we really are. Creating environments where owners stay involved, legacies live on, operators get supercharged, and customers retain the high touch local feel of trusted name brands in their backyard are the only way to build a truly differentiated product. M&A always pretends to be personal, but ends up so transactional. Hands are shook and then the amorphous corporate blob just slowly takes over. We're not just actively fighting against that, we're building a culture from the ground up thats antithetical to that. And it's incredible to see it all coming together. https://lnkd.in/gvjmAKDUPayan Sells to California Consolidator - Pool and Spa NewsPayan Sells to California Consolidator - Pool and Spa News

Evan Ferl shared thisToday i'm proud to officially announce what Eric Johnston, Mark Doody and I have been working on the past few years: California Pool Partners (CPP)! CPP didn't just happen overnight. It started small, with an hour recurring zoom meeting on Wednesday nights after the kids went to bed, where three tech guys asked the question: "what the hell are we (all) going to do next?" What emerged from those meetings was a plan to buy a small California pool business and see if we could do what we'd done in tech all these years: start small, but dream big. We spent our first quarters actually doing the work. Talking to (every) customer. Debating pricing strategies. Structuring employee-first delivery systems. Figuring out how to shut open pump valves off at 7pm on a friday night. You know, pool stuff. And what we discovered was not just how to run and grow a small services business, but how to reinvent the world of private equity from the ground up. And a few short (long?) years later, we're launching a new, true way for SMB owners to partner, to create something bigger together than the sum of our parts. We believe these industries must remain "we", not "us". America's mainstreet thrives when it retains its local, neighborhood nature - and isn't "run" but us, but supported by us. AI, tech, operational excellence, its all table stakes now - and comes in service of, not at the expense of, what made these companies great from the start. Today? We're servicing thousands of customers across the state of California, have completed 14 acquisitions, partnered with incredible owners, and we're only just beginning. A lot left to do, but already so much to be proud of. Keep swimming. https://lnkd.in/gVCenjPECalifornia Pool Partners Launches Owner-Centric Platform as Alternative to Traditional Private Equity Roll-UpsCalifornia Pool Partners Launches Owner-Centric Platform as Alternative to Traditional Private Equity Roll-Ups

Evan Ferl shared thiswith the recent PE entry into the MLB i'd like to announce my intention to purchase the Cleveland Guardians in a 100% seller financed deal, with payments structured over the next 50 years out of go forward net income. I encourage the organization to reach out to me directly to discuss terms and begin drafting the LOI.

Evan Ferl shared thisDoes this even work? A random company spamming unrequested invites on my calendar? I'm going to start doing the same but for my personal life. "Did Evan just randomly schedule me to hang out with him this Saturday?"

Evan Ferl posted thisIf you're starting out in your career (or really at any point in your career) my best advice is: connect with anyone and everyone. In my first job at SumTotal Systems, LLC literally every call I was on (if I said anything remotely meaningful or memorable) I'd crawl the invite list and send out linkedin requests. Add a personal note, etc. Kept doing it. Lawyers? Great. Product people? Awesome. Random procurement individual in the basement of a government office in Des Moines? Perfect. Grow your network whenever you get the chance to, even if you gotta be a little annoying about it (and since I'm always a little annoying about everything, I already didn't mind doing it). You never know when it will pay off, but I promise it will.

Would I disrupt strategy across multiple companies to get the rest of this 7’6” single fin? I might. Sorry Evan Ferl + Mark Doody. Regardless, if I was the rest of the industry, I’d start to worry a bit. Andy and the Skimmer team clearly came to play. 🚨 California's SB 53 “Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act” was officially signed into law yesterday by Gov. Newsom Who does it apply to? ✅ Large frontier developers: companies with > $500M in annual revenue that train/initiate the training of frontier models. ✅Frontier models: foundation models trained using ≥ 10²⁶ floating-point or integer operations. *These thresholds are intentionally high, but the bill's preamble notes that additional legislation could target smaller companies in the future. 📋 What does the law require? ✅ Risk frameworks: Companies must publish (on their websites) a “frontier AI framework” detailing how they assess and mitigate catastrophic risk, the cybersecurity practices leveraged, and the governance practices they put in place. ✅Transparency reports: Must be issued when deploying or substantially modifying a frontier model. ✅Reporting to state regulators: Summaries of risk assessments must be filed with California’s Office of Emergency Services, and critical safety incidents must be reported within 15 days (24 hours for imminent risks). ✅Whistleblower protections: Companies cannot prevent employees from reporting violations of the law or concerns that a developer's actions pose a danger to public health or safety. Penalties: Noncompliance can result in civil penalties of up to $1 million per violation, enforced by the Attorney General.

Israeli VCs with any California nexus: a California law may apply to your Israel-based fund if you have California investors or if your fund or any of your portfolio companies have a presence there. Eli Barasch and I just published a brief client update on California's "Fair Investment Practices by Venture Capital Companies Law" - when it can be triggered, what it requires, and how to assess whether the law applies to Israeli VCs. The law requires annual reporting on (among other things) founder-team diversity and the principal places of business of investment targets, without identifying founders or portfolio companies. The reports will be publicly available online and could be used to pressure funds that are perceived as underinvesting in diverse founder teams. . https://lnkd.in/d4e9_Nur #venturecapital ; Goldfarb Gross Seligman; Eli Barasch

A new California law introduces additional reporting requirements for certain venture capital firms, with implications for compliance, fund operations, and data governance. This client alert provides a clear overview of who is covered, what must be reported, and the considerations firms should be evaluating now.

More updates out of California this week. CARB’s November workshop yesterday delivered the most concrete guidance yet on how SB 253 and SB 261 will work in practice. While SB 261 is temporarily paused pending a January 9 court hearing, SB 253 is moving ahead. Top workshop takeaways: - SB 253 first-year deadline: proposed for August 10, 2026. - Significant first-year flexibility: no limited assurance and optional templates. - SB 261 guidance strengthened: with final checklist provided. - Key definitions refined: on revenue, doing business and parent/sub relationships. We’ve pulled together a full breakdown of what changed — and what companies should expect next. https://lnkd.in/gNtfsHa2
