    IBM has signed a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, LLC. (https://lnkd.in/eAfugJB3) For decades, IBM Research has believed that leadership in quantum computing comes from solving the hardest scientific and engineering challenges at scale. That philosophy has guided our work from the earliest superconducting quantum processors to the roadmap we are executing today toward large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing with Starling and beyond.     The HRL team brings deep expertise in silicon-spin qubits, quantum materials, quantum sensing, and the foundational technologies that underpin advanced quantum systems. Superconducting and silicon-spin qubits share many of the same engineering foundations, including advanced silicon fabrication, cryogenics, control electronics, packaging, and interconnects. Combining expertise across these disciplines creates new opportunities to deepen our understanding of how quantum technologies can be built, optimized, and scaled over the coming decades.     IBM continues to lead the industry through advances in superconducting qubits, error correction, quantum software, systems engineering, and a clear path to scaled quantum computing. The opportunity here is to build on that leadership by bringing additional scientific and technical capabilities into an already strong portfolio. HRL' s work in quantum sensing and quantum materials complements IBM's broader vision for a quantum future that includes new classes of sensors, networks, and technologies that can transform science and industry.     The announcement is particularly timely as IBM expands its quantum ecosystem through initiatives like Anderon. Bringing together world-class expertise in quantum hardware, manufacturing, and scientific discovery creates opportunities to accelerate learning and explore new approaches to scaling quantum technologies.     Great science advances through exceptional researchers working together across disciplines. I am looking forward to welcoming the HRL team to IBM and exploring what we can achieve together as we continue pushing the frontiers of quantum computing and quantum science.

    I’m proud to share that IBM is an official member of the Genesis Mission Consortium, along with a commitment of up to $50 million of quantum compute access to further the scientific goals of the Genesis Mission. The future of scientific discovery will depend on bringing together quantum computing, AI and high-performance computing in new ways. Furthermore, as part of the highly selective Genesis Mission Challenge application process, a project led by IBM Research’s Kristan Temme, in collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory, has been selected. The project focuses on the AI-assisted search for quantum algorithms, highlighting the potential of combining AI and quantum technologies to accelerate scientific breakthroughs.
