Help Shape the Future of .AU Domains For every Australian business owner and domain investor, the Australian Domain Administration (auDA) is reviewing the .au Licensing Rules, and the proposed changes could have a real impact on business owners that own more than one domain, domain investors, portfolio owners, and SEO companies that register domains. Current .au eligibility policies are often misunderstood, creating unnecessary public confusion around legitimate domain investing. Some think that if a domain name is acquired by an investor and is not currently in use, it constitutes an unfair holding and should be made exclusively available to an operational business in that industry. Some of the suggestions provided by the panel will severely affect anyone who owns multiple domain names. Some of the points raised were covered by Domainer https://lnkd.in/gcJnYjh5 Australia already has the world's most restrictive domain namespace, and if some of the panel's suggestions are adopted, it would become even more restrictive severely reducing the value of .com.au domains and encourge businesses to use other extensions like .com .ai .io .co etc.. Please have your say before it is too late for Australian domain investors! 👉 Submit your feedback here: https://lnkd.in/g53Svv9u Submission and consultation close on 10 July 2026, 11:59 PM AEST.
A petition to stop auDA implementing this policy has started here: https://change.org/stop-auda-policy-change-adding-domain-name-tax
"Removing just (f) would financially harm, not only Drop.com.au but also every other domain marketplace and domain monetization platform" I am not seeing the downside here. Maybe I will *finally* be able to register pratley.com.au that's been held by some random for a very long time... These places prey on domains that people for many reasons might forget to renew, billing issues, hosts being dumb etc - and get scooped up by places like drop.com.au and sold back for extortion. I'd love to see the .au namespace properly cleaned up, to be frank.
We should go back to the limit of two domains in the .au space per registered business name. Although since business name registration went Federal, do we have BN numbers?
Domains should not even be an investment opportunity. They should be an extension of the trademarks and other IP that companies have already invested in, and only available to people or organisations that intend to use and build value in them.
One thing Australia doesn't need is more restrictions. #FreeEnterprise
