Wayne Blodwell shared thisThis week on Giants Of Media I sat down with Lydia Oakes and Andy Oakes from Bluestripe Group — two people I’ve known and trusted for a long time (and shout out for them letting me use NewDigitalAge to write a regular column!) We covered a lot, but a few things really stuck with me: 👉 Is PR actually becoming more important because of AI and LLMs? 👉 Founders — at what point do you need to stop making yourself the story? 👉 Are we at too many industry events? And if you could only pick one… Cannes or Possible? 👉 And a big one for AdTech startups: hiring a salesperson is NOT a go-to-market strategy. Andy and Lydia have a unique view of the industry because they sit across PR, publishing, events and GTM and because of that there’s loads of practical advice in this one. Plus, Andy makes a strong case for why he simply cannot give up Cannes! Give it a listen (link in comments) and let me know what you think!

Wayne Blodwell posted thisI've been in AdTech since 2010, and seeing the recent news across the industry around restructures and redundancies has been tough to read. Having been around the industry for a while now, I wanted to humbly share three pieces of advice for anyone impacted: 1. There are great roles out there. I've posted four great current open positions at Assembly Global (mix of US and UK) in the comments. If one is relevant, please apply and if you know someone who would be a great fit, please share it with them. 2. Keep networking. Don't feel guilty about reaching out to people. Everyone is time-poor, but most people are also willing to help where they can. Use this time to reconnect with old colleagues, clients, partners and friends across the industry. One conversation can open a door you weren't expecting. 3. Remember: it's cyclical. Industries contract and expand. AdTech has been through plenty of cycles since I joined in 2010, and it will go through plenty more. This one is no different. For anyone impacted: keep talking to people, keep putting yourself out there and, most importantly, keep positive. There are still great companies, great roles and great opportunities across this industry, even if it feels difficult to see that right now.

Wayne Blodwell shared thisNew episode of Giants of Media is out now with the one and only Keith Gooberman! Imagine deciding to start a DSP business from scratch… it gives me chills just thinking about it. But Keith is out there doing exactly that and doing it incredibly well. In this episode, we dive into what it takes to build a modern DSP, what truly differentiates one in today’s market, why owning and building the infrastructure rather than licensing it is so critical, and plenty more. Keith is genuinely one of my favorite people to talk AdTech with. Every conversation leaves me feeling inspired and I’m hoping this episode does the same for everyone who listens. https://lnkd.in/gKpf-gEU

Wayne Blodwell shared this🚨 New Giants of Media episode! I loved this conversation with Marc Guldimann, Founder of Adelaide. We get into why bad metrics create bad incentives, whether attention can become a true currency for media quality, and why the rise of AI agents could make measuring quality more important than ever. Marc is one of the sharpest thinkers in media, and we went into some very specific detail on where the industry is likely heading. 🎧 Definitely worth a listen (link in comments and on Spotify)

Wayne Blodwell shared thisBack from parental leave and back with my column. This time I’m covering what I know many of us are asking - what happens when AI inevitably makes execution cheaper? Our industry (& others) has been through technology shifts before, and there are multiple paths companies can take. But one thing feels increasingly clear: as execution becomes commoditized, understanding becomes more valuable. The challenge is how agencies, platforms, publishers and brands continue to cultivate, recognize and reward that understanding. This is the topic I’m spending more time thinking about than any other right now, so I’d genuinely love to hear different perspectives. Link in comments.

What made the week so meaningful was the chance to spend time with so many wonderful people while supporting a cause that helps families access critical care for their children. A sincere thank you to Stephanie Benson, Mackenzie Mueller, Jen Havard, Anna Buan for including us in the events, and to everyone across UnitedHealthcare and UnitedHealth Group who put so much thought and effort into planning. We felt incredibly welcomed and appreciated every conversation, laugh, and moment along the way. It was a great reminder that partnerships can extend well beyond the work we do together -- and that coming together around something that matters makes those partnerships even more special. Grateful to have been part of it. ❤️ Learn more about UHCCF or find a way to get involved: https://lnkd.in/eQ_AQwxc #StackAdapt #UHCCF #UnitedHealthcare

Wayne Blodwell liked thisWayne Blodwell liked thisI hadn't run a mile. Ever. In 10 days, I'm running my first 5K. A few months ago, I started working with my coach, Apollo Story. The first time we ran together I told him the truth: nothing since gym class, and Im 44. This morning I ran two miles at a 15:30 pace, and it felt doable. I did not love it. But doable is a big word for me right now. Here's what Apollo told me about race day, and I think it applies to a lot more than running. Run the first mile slower than you want to. Most people go out hot, feel great for four minutes, and gas out in the middle. Then they stop. Mile two is where you settle into your real pace. Your body is warm, and you know what you can hold. Mile three is where you pick it up. In the last half mile, you give it everything. I've built a company for 12 years, and I've watched plenty of people sprint the first mile. The ones still running are the ones who figured out their pace. The other thing that has kept me going is telling people about it. My wife knows. My kids are asking why Dad is doing a race. My team has heard about it. Now you have too. Accountability is uncomfortable. That's the point. Race is on October 10. I'll let you know how it goes.

Wayne Blodwell liked thisWayne Blodwell liked thisAI moves in dog years. Organizations move in human years. How moonshots can help leaders close the gap: 1️⃣ Moonshots help leaders reset organizational ambition. Setting a moonshot gives organizations a new North Star, focusing attention on what could be possible and giving people permission to think bigger. 2️⃣ Moonshots help leaders build new muscles across their teams. Win or lose, moonshot thinking becomes an organizational forcing function that: ↳ Builds new habits ↳ Spurs creative thinking ↳ Breaks old assumptions ↳ Normalizes testing and failure ↳ Drives disruption before it’s forced 3️⃣ Moonshots help leaders push beyond incremental thinking. 10% asks how to improve what exists. 10x forces us to imagine what could exist, opening the door to: ↳ Radical solutions ↳ Breakthrough technology ↳ Rapid experimentation ↳ Faster failure and learning ↳ Ideas incremental thinking would never surface I’ve always been fascinated by what helps organizations move through periods of rapid change, and the role leaders play in creating momentum. The gap between AI’s potential and our ability to execute against it is one of the most interesting leadership challenges I’ve seen. ✨ What tools are you using to get your organization moving? And what’s your moonshot for 2027? #lifeatgoogle #moonshots #momentum

Wayne Blodwell liked thisWayne Blodwell liked thisTrading London for New York next week. Excited to be heading back over to New York after my last US trip left me with plenty to think about, and plenty more conversations I wanted to continue. This time I’m heading over for ADWEEK House: Advertising HQ, where I’ll be moderating Choose Your Player: The Battle for In-Store Leadership at SMG Commerce Connections. In-store is one of those areas of commerce media where there is a lot happening very quickly. More investment, more screens, more formats and more networks entering the space. But more does not necessarily mean better. What I’m interested in is what will actually define the businesses that lead here. Is it having the scale and inventory advertisers want ? Is it being able to properly connect what happens in-store with the rest of the customer journey ? Or, ultimately, does it come down to being able to prove that it worked ? I’ll be exploring exactly that with a fantastic panel: Collin Colburn from IAB, Chip Harding from Simon Property Group, Austin Leonard from DG Media Network Britt Polihronis from Hy-Vee, Inc. / RedMedia at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. If you’re in New York, come and join us at Gary’s Loft for SMG North America Commerce Connections. Register here: https://lnkd.in/eAD66ukq And if you’re around in the evening, we still have a couple of spaces at SMG Supper Club. Drop me a message if you fancy joining us for dinner.

Wayne Blodwell liked thisWayne Blodwell liked thisI’m honoured and delighted to be joining Keesing Media Group as CEO and building on the excellent work done to date under Philip’s leadership over the last decade. I'm looking forward to working with the board and BC Partners as we move into our next chapter of growth. Puzzles play a key role in consumer engagement for any media outlet - and that is one of the key reasons I’m so excited for the opportunities that exist for Keesing. Personally, I’ve long held a passion for games that test the brain and indeed I spent much time as a child playing the board game Diplomacy around the family table as well as being challenged on my numerical skills through various number games. To this day, a part of my daily routine continues to include playing a number of brain games - with Sudoku being the most common! Can't wait to meet the teams across the globe and get stuck in! https://lnkd.in/e_PxTCD3

The headline looks good, but where's the money actually going? The latest ISBA survey shows 65% of UK marketers plan to increase their media budgets in 2026 - but dig deeper and the picture gets more interesting. The brand building comeback 37% are increasing spend on brand building. This should play to the strengths of the open web, especially quality media. Not massive, but a decent start - and it suggests the 'long and short of it' message has finally landed. Top growth channels: 1) Addressable/Connected TV 2) Digital Video 3) Influencer Media 4) Retail Media What the data tells us - The retail media number aligns closely with the buy-side research I conducted with Dominic Finney at Ascentinel – we're seeing 30% growth forecasts vs 25% in this study. Strong confidence in the sector. CTV/digital video is more interesting. When we ran wave one of our CTV/premium video research in March, growth was predicted at just under 10%. Now it's 32%. We're in market now conducting wave two (covering agencies and brands), digging into what's driving the market, barriers to spend and what buyers really want from providers. Get in touch if you'd like early access to the findings. The reality check Is there a disconnect between predictions and what's happening at the coalface? Speaking with buy-side friends at the recent Future of Media event, I'm hearing brand spend is genuinely back on the agenda. The watch-out: Word to the wise is the ‘long’ part of it. Shifting the brand needle takes time and doesn’t always show up on a fancy dashboard straight away. Def an opportunity for the open-web to collaborate to show what's possible. TBH this has often been more noise than action - but I've seen some really interesting partnerships being announced (we've got one at DAIVID 🦩 Creative Data coming....) that are hard proof of outcome measurement. https://lnkd.in/eZw8Fxsg

Some key takeaways from Walmart Connect’s kickoff to the ANAs Masters of Marketing last week. Our massive out of home footprint (in-store screens, fuel stations and self check out) coupled with Vizio’s dominance in CTV reach and integrated marketing capabilities allow for a full funnel solution powered by accountable measurement and first party data. Three points jump out for me… 1. Retail media can now power holistic media strategies. 2.Uneven Adoption/application means early movers can seize a stronger share of voice more efficiently and 3. Maturing measurement solutions- including with CTV- are helping brands harness retail media’s full- funnel potential. #ana #walmartconnect #letssparksales

Buyers say bad measurement of retail media campaigns is a barrier to investment (The Drum): By Gordon Young, Editor-In-Chief, The Drum. Measurement problems are now costing networks money: Perhaps the most significant finding is that these frustrations are no longer merely theoretical. Five buyers said they had reduced or discontinued investment because of measurement issues. For two, measurement quality had become a primary factor behind decisions to reduce or decline […] #DOOH #retailmedianetworks #digitalsignage

Excited to share that Aperiam has invested in Bedrock Platform. Obvious statement of the century: programmatic advertising has a complexity problem. The infrastructure that was built to give media buyers control has, over time, done the opposite. Burying teams under layers of operational overhead, legacy tooling, and opaque supply chains. Bedrock is built on a simple but powerful thesis: what if you stripped away the bloat and rebuilt the stack around what actually matters... precision, transparency, and speed to execution. Their platform combines AI-driven campaign automation with curated, premium inventory across video, CTV, DOOH, and audio, and aims to be flexible and get smarter over time. Plus, the team (Shane, Austin, Ryan, James) has deep roots in the infrastructure layer of ad tech and understands the plumbing better than almost anyone. We believe the next generation of programmatic will be leaner, faster and AI-first. Bedrock is building that.
