Marvin Chow shared thisvery grateful to LinkedIn for naming me a Top Voice this week. the idea got me thinking about what a platform like this is actually for and why it matters… for most of history, having a public voice required someone's permission. the internet was the first technology that really broke that down. in August 1999, Pyra Labs launched Blogger (i still remember editing my template too much) and turned a $50-a-month HTML hosting bill into a free ten-minute signup. in 2004, Adam Curry and Dave Winer wired audio into RSS feeds so radio didn't need a broadcast tower. a year later, Jawed Karim uploaded eighteen seconds at the San Diego Zoo to launch YouTube. fast forward to today, and anyone can say anything and build an audience around it. at the same time, generative AI is making creation itself essentially free - lowering the floor for anyone to make things while raising the ceiling on what's possible. and when anyone can generate anything instantly, scarcity moves somewhere new. think about looking for brunch in San Francisco. you can pull up 700 spots with a 4.6-star average, which is technically accurate and almost useless on a Sunday morning. or you can check one influencer whose style and editorial judgment you already know, and their top three immediately become your top three. that's why we follow people now the way we used to follow publications. i don't read marketing trade news on a regular basis - i get culture, fashion, and tech from people whose views i trust, and they surface what's interesting to me. when creation is unlimited, a real point of view is the most valuable thing in the feed. if you're following along here, thank you! and i'll keep doing my best to share a unique, nuanced POV on AI and what we're learning as we build. Marvin Chow shared thisa lot of us are still thinking about AI as a destination. it’s going to work better as a layer. a standalone AI chat tool is a destination, just like your inbox. you open it in a new browser tab, stare at an empty input box, and try to figure out what prompt will give you the answer you need. that was a good mental model for the first phase of this technology. AI models can do lots of different things, and exposing such a general-purpose system to users is hard. but the novelty fades fast. people don't want to spend their working hours babysitting five different AI chats and re-explaining the same things over and over. they want tools that already understand their commitments, their calendar, and their team context in a durable way. that shift from thinking about AI as a destination to a layer is where things get interesting. we’re in the early stages of this new phase, and it’s where the real product craft begins. by opting in to connecting AI tools to sources of context about you, like your email or your work docs, we move beyond what models know in isolation to designing experiences that anticipate your needs inside existing routines. this is what i mean by a layer: AI works with the context and reality captured in the apps you already use and helps you manage them more efficiently. imagine starting your day and finding your calendar optimized, your unread threads processed, and your project notes organized in just the right way to help you knock out those three things you really need to do before the client meeting at 2pm. turning frontier model power into that kind of calm, proactive utility is an immense product design challenge. it requires solving for latency, building deep trust, and respecting privacy boundaries while making sure the software never gets in the way of the person using it. nobody wants more stuff to manage. but when you build software that fits seamlessly into existing habits, it stops feeling like another thing to keep track of and starts feeling like an everyday helper. the future belongs to the teams that turn that intelligence into everyday help for real people.

Marvin Chow shared thiswe’re launching a new partnership with Jimmy Donaldson (aka MrBeast), expanding beyond YouTube across Gemini and Google Health. this is a big deal. new technology often doesn’t become real to people until people like creators get their hands on it. we saw this back in 2008, when traditional broadcast networks were dragging their feet on upgrading to HD. creators bought the Canon 5d Mark II, shot cinematic 1080p in their bedrooms, and proved high-res video was the new standard years before cable caught up. or when YouTube launched 4k in 2010. almost nobody owned a 4k monitor then. creators uploaded anyway, stress-tested the pipes, and forced hardware makers to catch up. or when podcasting was stuck in its audio-only era. creators put cameras in the studio, proved people wanted to watch the conversation, and turned YouTube into the biggest podcast platform in the world with over a billion people watching every month. today, the creator economy is a massive economic engine - YouTube has paid out $100+ billion to creators over the last four years, contributing $55 billion to US gdp last year alone. top creators are operating like the startups of hollywood, building production studios and green-lighting their own concepts. that's why it’s so important that we’re working with Jimmy to showcase our newest AI technologies. reaching 500 million subscribers requires insane operational precision. Jimmy pushes production to the absolute edge. and when someone with his scale plugs Gemini into their workflow, it’s demystifies what AI actually does. he's not typing prompts into a box to replace human creativity. he's using it as an operational co-pilot to pull off impossible logistics in the real world - starting with surviving three of the most brutal climates on earth. creators have always been how frontier tech meets human context. AI is the next chapter. can’t wait to show this to the world with Jimmy.

Marvin Chow posted thiswhat’s the balance in your Brand Bank” right now? are you making real deposits… or is automated content quietly draining your account? was great talking with Daniel Murray on The Marketing Millennials podcast about Brand Banks and the role they will play in an AI world. when generative tools make content creation essentially free, the instinct for a lot of brands is to flood every channel with high-volume output. they treat throughput as progress. the reality is that your audience’s attention has never been more guarded. every piece of generic, automated filler you put into the world is a quiet withdrawal from your brand bank of consumer trust. not sure when/how this shifts. but the brands winning right now aren't the ones publishing the most content. they're the ones exercising creative judgment to make meaningful deposits - having a distinct point of view, respecting the audience's time, and having the discipline to kill anything that feels like synthetic noise. when execution gets cheap, throughput stops being impressive. discipline is the deposit. if execution is free, the only metric that matters is what you refuse to ship. how many drafts is your team actively killing every week before they ever leave the building?

Marvin Chow shared thiswhen the cost of creating something drops to zero, what actually becomes valuable? we’ve spent 20+ years in a world where distribution has been infinite thanks to the internet. i spent some time last week speaking with curators, creatives and senior leaders at the Asian Art Museum ( 🙏 Soyoung Lee) about what happens when generative AI also makes production infinite. basically infinite creativity. it lowers the bar for more people to participate and share their stories with the world. but it also raises the ceiling for what's possible, redefining the future of art and creativity. the result is a really different world that continues to shift fast. the best way to understand it is to look at what remains scarce and unique in a world of abundance. scarcity often signals value. the best parallel i’ve heard is how the invention of the photograph transformed painters from simply replicating the real world to the creation of abstract art and "non-representational" artists like Kandinsky, Klint and Pollock. you could argue that these greats do not rise without the invention of the photograph and i’m optimistic that from the AI movement, new eras of art and artist will arise. when technical friction disappears, creative value shifts. a few thoughts on what (still) matters: 1. human experience: AI often initially centers around a a polished average. this is ok, but it’s no substitute for lived human experience and vulnerability - which are the core of all great creative endeavors. 2. judgement: when anyone can produce an image, writing, video or music with a single prompt, the first draft is even less valuable. what’s needed is a creative with a critical eye. the craft is in using AI, but then deciding what to elevate and make special. 3. conviction: a big part of great creative output is the human experience that drives a person to fight for that creative pov. in a world of infinite creation, people will trust those with an authentic POV that has overcome the criticism of many - as both creator and curator - more. AI tools make the floor accessible to everyone, but human judgment determines the ceiling. how’s your team rethinking its creative bar?

Marvin Chow shared thisan interesting fact caught my eye in a MarTech article i was reading. apparently Gartner is forecasting that more than 40% of enterprise AI agent deployments will get canceled by 2027. i understand the pressure… and when AI deployments don’t work, it's natural for leadership teams to question the technology or wonder if the model reasoning and context windows aren't quite ready. we are in the messy phase of this technology chapter so that’s a reasonable diagnosis - but it's wrong. the models are ready for real work. you'll find the actual bottlenecks hidden elsewhere, in an org's day-to-day processes and frameworks. i've seen it firsthand with my own team as we implement AI tools: they don’t magically fix the thousands broken manual workflows. if you aren't building on top of structured context, you're just going to be generating bad briefs, unapproved variants and messy assets at machine speed. and the other reality: when software makes draft creation essentially free, draft generation is no longer the bottleneck. human judgment is. the best marketing teams i talk to in 2026 are winning because they built the workflow infrastructure to govern the flood: clean intake rules, clear handoff gates, and the editorial restraint to kill what's unusable and work to improve and uplift what is. automation accelerates whatever process you already have. if your workflow is chaotic, AI just scales the chaos. the trap execs are falling into with enterprise AI pilots is conflating the ability to draft anything really fast with actually getting real work done. they’re not the same thing. so fix the messy workflows first. the highest-ROI AI investment in your company this year is probably just building a clear, disciplined filter for what actually deserves human attention.

Opal was one of those 0→1 experiments: a chance to explore what happens when we make it dramatically easier for people to customize AI and build their own workflows. We ran that experiment for more than a year, watched people build things we never would have imagined, and learned an enormous amount about how people want to shape AI around the way they work. Today, we announced that Opal will be winding down - and many of those learnings are now helping shape skills in Gemini. That feels like exactly what a great experiment should do: push on an idea, learn quickly, and carry the best of what you discover forward into what comes next.
