Pierce Wetter posted thisAdvice for a Time Traveler: Technology moves fast, especially opensource. Since I’ve barely coded in anger since 2019, I feel like I’ve traveled in time as I try to get back into it. Lots to catch up on. Python is now at version 3, added async. Typescript killed Coffeescript Rust is now a thing in the browser because of WebAssembly. Cargo is the package manager for rust NodeJs is at 21 React is now at version 18 webpack is at version 5 yarn is at 4.0.1 If you’re going Rust, Dioxus is a React-like approach. graylog is at version 5, not sure how it compares to Kibana grafana is at version 10 Kibana is at version 8.11 ElasticSearch is also at 8.11 Golang is at 1.24 Tensorflow is at 2.14 So my plan is to start with Python 3, catch up on React next, anyone have any suggestions what I should learn next? So I’m thinking about diving into Python3 first. What should I study next?

Pierce Wetter shared thisHere's my best job hunt tips: The hardest thing about job hunting for humans is the lack of feedback. Humans run on dopamine, the hormone that is released when you succeed at something. No dopamine makes depression and frustration. As a software engineer, you're spoiled. You get successes all day long, any time you fix a bug or your code compiles, winner, winner, chicken dinner! Now those dopamine hits are gone. To counteract this you have to make yourself a chart that you put on your office door or your refrigerator to track progress. What I did is "gamify" this so that I got a certain number of points for everything: Cold call, cold email, linkedIn message, etc. Interview was 1000 points. I tricked myself by making things I didn't like to do more points. So you treat your job hunt as a job, and you're earning points. I made a chart and I would just hash mark anytime I did something. Will initially joined Cisco in 2000 with the acquisition of Growth Networks. In a fortunate professional career, you get to work a few times with people whose passion motivates you every day. Or with people who challenge you to set goals (and help you achieve them) that you never thought possible. Or folks who will have your back through even your worst moments and help you turn mistakes into growth. Or even leaders who can show both empathy and deep authenticity and vulnerability. And maybe a few people who become more than a colleague, but a true friend who helps you become a better person in addition to a better executive. I got to spend ten years working with someone who embodied all of this, and it was the best professional experience of my life. Thanks for everything Dan!

A status check on PostgreSQL 19, because a lot of Q4 plans have it in them. As of this morning the open items wiki lists RC 1 as TBD and GA as TBD, with 37 unresolved items. Feature freeze was April 8th; Beta 3 shipped on August 13th. The distribution matters more than the count. Ten of the 37 have REPACK in the title, and eleven of them sit on the two REPACK commits, 28d534e and ac58465. A twelfth is an old logical-decoding race that Álvaro Herrera annotated with the note that REPACK probably makes it more dangerous. Álvaro owns almost all of them. Read the titles as a set and you get a coherent picture of a feature that was committed before anyone stress-tested its edges. REPACK (CONCURRENTLY) does not handle invalid indexes, rewrites tables marked user_catalog_table, fails when the table owner lacks CONNECT, does not check the table access method, throws the wrong error for materialized views, waits indefinitely when its decoding worker fails to start, and breaks when the replica-identity index is dropped. REPACK (ANALYZE) segfaults inside a transaction block. The documentation has the b-tree requirement backwards. None of this is surprising once you know the mechanism: REPACK (CONCURRENTLY) runs a logical decoding worker and consumes a replication slot, which is why 19 also adds max_repack_replication_slots, and replica identity, catalog tables, and worker lifecycle are precisely the surfaces that design touches. The practical reading for planning: 19 is worth testing this week and a poor candidate for a committed GA date this week, and REPACK (CONCURRENTLY) in particular is not something to point at a production table in 19.0. If you have an upgrade window to defend to a business that wants a date, we do this kind of assessment and are comfortable putting a recommendation in writing.
