Patience Elfving reposted thisPatience Elfving reposted thisJune 2, 2025 — the whole Bay cracked a smile. From the very first mic “check-check” to the last lingering hug, our HiiiWAV Tiny Desk Watch Party wasn’t just a viewing—it was a victory lap for every under-resourced creative who dares to dream big. Together we celebrated the NPR Tiny Desk debut of E-40 & The Soul Slappers, and the room practically vibrated with hometown pride. Picture it: entrepreneurship workshops birthing business plans, AFRO AI Accelerator whispering possibility, ElectroSpit talkbox turning ideas into pure sonic magic. Kev Choice on keys, Howard Wiley on sax, Silk-E’s velvet vocals, Dame Drummer’s heartbeat rhythms, Martin Luther on guitar and vocals, Marcus Phillips on bass, DJ KMP slicing through the air, and yours truly, Bosko Kante, bending electricity with the talkbox. This Tiny Desk moment would not exist without strategic visionary Terrence “Cool Nutz” Scott and all star publicist Didier Morais. Guiding the HiiiWAV vision behind the scenes were co-founders Maya Kante & Miles D. —proof that community is our greatest instrument. Through entrepreneurship coaching, tech tools, co-working studios, and performance stages, we’re building creative wealth in the Bay—one artist, one riff, one business plan at a time. HiiiWAV was born to level the playing field for Black artists who’ve always had platinum-level talent but not platinum-level access. When the Tiny Desk cameras rolled and the nation heard the Bay’s heartbeat, it wasn’t just our voices that rang out—it was every workshop, late-night mixing session, and “you got this” text echoing across the country. Yet even as we celebrate, support for underrepresented founders is being challenged nationwide. That makes wins like this more urgent—and more powerful. If our story sings to you, don’t just like and share—link up. Text, call, DM, or email me. Let’s strategize on scholarships, internships, investments, grants, recording time, and partnership deals that help creatives build wealth and whole communities rise. To everyone who clapped, streamed, volunteered, or believed: thank you. You turned a watch party into a watershed. Keep riding this wave with us—because when HiiiWAV lifts, the entire Bay Area (and far beyond) lifts with it. 🌊💙 🎶 The Soul Slappers (Dream Team): Bosko Kante – MD, vocals & ElectroSpit; Kev Choice – piano; Howard Wiley – sax; Silk-E – vocals; Dame Drummer – drums; Marcus Phillips – bass; DJ KMP – turntables; Martin Luther – guitar. Patience Elfving shared thisSidebar is such a powerful platform and community. I was honored to be an early supporter and facilitator and I’ve seen first hand the lives it has impacted in such positive ways. Lexy Franklin samantha foster bergeron, Jeremy Barton, and the whole team there have built something special and I highly recommend giving it a try.Patience Elfving shared thisToday we officially launched Sidebar, a leadership program that accelerates your career with expertly facilitated peer groups, a virtual platform, and a curriculum designed to help you reach your most audacious goals. I had an epiphany when I was working at Facebook. I was surrounded by some of the smartest people in the world and my goal was to learn as much as possible from them. There was plenty of room to collaborate, but there was no easy forum to learn from my peers. If this was challenging at Facebook — a company known for excellent execution — it was likely a problem everywhere. I saw a massive opportunity to connect like-minded peers to grow in their careers. This need only grew in the aftermath of COVID. We started Sidebar because leadership can be lonely, especially in a virtual world. Remote working has only deepened the divide between meaningful connections. We believe nothing will get you further in your career than learning from your peers. Peers encourage. Peers challenge. Peers hold us accountable. Peers accelerate us. Small group coaching unlocks career growth in a way nothing else can. It’s an untapped competitive advantage. We find your people. Using a vetting process and tech-powered matching capabilities, we’re bringing together the top minds in leadership. Sidebar is not a network to find business contacts, it’s a program to get results in your career. It’s the difference between a gym membership and an elite fitness program led by a best-in-class trainer. Social accountability, expert guidance, and clear results make all the difference. Sidebar works. 93% of members say Sidebar helped them achieve a significant positive change in their career. I’ve been inspired by our members’ lives, their stories, and their careers. They come from all sorts of backgrounds — they are startup founders, senior leaders, CEOs, Oscar winners, and Olympians – but all share important attributes: an incredible growth mindset, a demonstrated track record of success, and an ability to embrace the constant change that comes with rapid progress. No one reaches a milestone like this alone and I have so many people to thank. There are my incredible colleagues at Sidebar who are small in number but amazing in talent, energy, and commitment to our members. It is an incredible honor to learn from each of you every day. Most importantly, I want to thank our members. A peer-based program is only as good as the people who are sharing, advising, and supporting each other. You’re all amazing. As of today, there are more than 5,000 people on our waitlist, and we can’t wait to grow our community. Finally, thanks to TechCrunch for sharing the journey. If you’re a growth-minded leader, join us and supercharge your career! https://lnkd.in/e3B4yqFr #sidebar #community #sidebarsuccessSidebar thinks the key to career dev is small peer groups | TechCrunchSidebar thinks the key to career dev is small peer groups | TechCrunch

It's my first significant time off since 2003, and it couldn't have come at a better time: my kid Strider Schulte is heading to college — in Paris! — soon and I want to soak up all the time with him that I can. My mode this summer is going to be explosive exploration and anything that gets a "hell yes." I'm working on a book with my sister, and I plan to write every day in some capacity and also revive my podcast. Other than that, I don't really know, but I'm excited to find out. HMU if you'd like to connect IRL or virtual. I have time to ask you how you are and really listen. ❤️

Patience Elfving reacted on thisWe’re honored to welcome Erin Gore, former CEO of World Central Kitchen, to Watch Duty as our new Chief Impact Officer. Erin’s leadership is rooted in humility and bold vision. She has a proven track record of turning ambitious ideas into global movements—grounded in speed, humanity, and strategic clarity. Her values align deeply with our mission: crisis response that is fast, accessible, and built around people. When Erin joined World Central Kitchen (WCK) in 2019, the organization had just a few million dollars and one powerful idea. Under her leadership, WCK scaled into a leading global NGO serving hundreds of millions of meals to communities in crisis. That work has deeply inspired us at Watch Duty as we reimagine what a nonprofit can be—and how technology and trust can save lives. Before WCK, she worked alongside visionary founders such as Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai at the Malala Fund as well as Share Our Strength where she focused on growth and fundraising. Across every chapter of her career, she’s channeled passion into impact—building organizations that rise to meet the moment. We couldn’t be more excited to take this next step with her as we continue scaling Watch Duty to protect more lives, more communities, and more of what we all hold dear.Patience Elfving reacted on thisI’m excited to share that I’m joining Watch Duty as Chief Impact Officer! I’m in New York this week representing our fearless, mission-driven team at Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies Awards, where Watch Duty was just named the #1 nonprofit in 2025. It’s an honor to stand alongside CEO & Cofounder John Clarke Mills and the team who have revolutionized mutual aid starting with wildfire. As the former CEO of World Central Kitchen, I saw how critical and heartbreakingly sparse real-time information is during a disaster. We partnered with Watch Duty to display WCK meal sites in the app during wildfire responses and that experience opened my eyes to just how powerful and life-saving this resource is. The more I’ve come to know the team and the bold, purpose-driven vision behind Watch Duty, the more certain I became that this was the right moment and the right mission for me to join. Watch Duty was born from a moment of panic. In 2019, barely a month after moving to Sonoma County, John saw water dropping helicopters overhead but there was no warning, no alert, and no information. A few minutes later a large air tanker flew overhead and dropped retardant over his neighbors barn, stopping the fire in its tracks. The fire was contained, but this moment left its mark. In the chaos of trying to figure out where to evacuate, John saw volunteers sharing real-time updates from scanner traffic which was faster and more accurate than any official source. That moment exposed a dangerous information vacuum and sparked the creation of Watch Duty. Launched in one California county in 2021, Watch Duty now covers 22 states and became the most downloaded app during the January 2025 LA wildfires, saving many many lives. Watch Duty is powered by engineers and volunteer firefighters, dispatchers, and first responders who contribute around the clock. And it’s completely free and downloadable from your app store. As Chief Impact Officer, I’ll focus on fueling our internal & external growth by securing transformative funding, amplifying our reach, and forging partnerships that help us scale by getting Watch Duty into the hands of everyone who needs it. We’ve been there for rural communities, we were there for LA, and we’re working to be there for every community that might need us next. Disasters are becoming more frequent and more intense, so we’re expanding locally, nationally, and eventually internationally to ensure more people have real-time access to life-saving information, whether it’s fire, flood, hurricane, drought, or whatever crisis comes next. Thanks for following along on my next chapter!

Patience Elfving reacted on thisPatience Elfving reacted on this☀️I’m still inspired by last week’s Women's History Month celebration at SHACK15 in San Francisco. 👏 The energy in the room, the conversations, and the incredible women leading the discussions made this event very special. One of the standout panels, Designing the Future with AI: Powered by All of Us, explored the importance of diversity in tech and AI. It was moderated by Aparna Dhinakaran, the panel featured Rajy Tanneeru, Taylor Lallas, and Tatyana Mamut, PhD, who shared insights on innovation and unavoidable future with an AI powered world🌎. Another powerful session, The Missing Piece in Women’s Healthcare, opened up much-needed conversations about anxiety, trauma, and holistic healing—reminding us that women’s health needs to be seen in its full complexity. Thanks to Patience Yi, Diana Bitting, Dr. Bernadette Lim and Nkechi Deanna Njaka. The event wrapped up with an inspiring conversation led by Lauren Schiller featuring Heidi Quante, Elissa Strauss, and Tiffany Shlain, highlighting the impact of storytelling and art in social change. 👏🌟 Huge thanks to Jørn Lyseggen for creating such an incredible space at SHACK15 that brings together innovators, artists, and changemakers. I left feeling energized, inspired, and even more committed to the power of community and collaboration. I will come back and attend more events! ☀️

My message to the Provo City Board of Education: Dear Provo City School District Board Members, I’m writing as a Provo community member to urge you to reconsider the decision to cut elementary school orchestra and band programs. This is a short-sighted budget fix with long-term costs. Elementary music is not an “extra.” It’s the foundation. When students get their first real exposure to instrumental music early, they build the confidence, basic technique, and identity that make them far more likely to continue in middle school and high school. When that foundation is removed, participation drops later because students feel behind, intimidated, or simply never discover that they can do it. That doesn’t just affect “future musicians.” It affects school culture, student engagement, and the sense of belonging that comes from being part of something bigger than yourself. Music education also develops skills that show up everywhere: discipline, listening, teamwork, perseverance, and emotional regulation. For many kids, band or orchestra is the first place they learn to practice consistently and see progress they earned. It’s also often the reason a student is excited to come to school. Cutting these programs will disproportionately harm students who don’t have access to private lessons or extracurricular music opportunities. Families with means will find workarounds. Everyone else loses the on-ramp. I recognize the District has real budget constraints. But eliminating elementary instrumental programs shifts the “savings” into future costs: reduced participation and proficiency later, weaker feeder programs, fewer performance opportunities, and diminished community pride and connection. It’s a decision that solves a spreadsheet problem while creating a student-outcomes problem. I’m asking the Board to: 1) Pause or reverse this decision while alternatives are evaluated. 2) Hold a public session specifically on arts/music programming impacts and options. 3) Explore other cost reductions before cutting foundational student programs. 4) Consider bridge solutions—reduced frequency, shared instructors across schools, a pilot at key schools, or partnerships with local universities/community arts organizations—rather than eliminating the program entirely. If the concern is purely financial, I also hope you’ll pursue every available option—grants, community partnerships, and targeted fundraising—before removing a program that cannot be easily rebuilt once the pipeline collapses. Please protect these programs. Our students deserve a complete education, and our district will be stronger for choosing long-term wisdom over short-term cuts. Respectfully, Daren Smith
