Practice is often designed to make learning orderly: one concept, one problem type, one strategy at a time. But real work rarely arrives that way. Interleaving changes the nature of practice. Rather than repeatedly applying a known strategy, learners encounter related situations in which they must first recognize what they are dealing with, retrieve relevant knowledge, distinguish among alternatives, and decide what response fits. The goal is not simply to make practice more varied. It is to strengthen the diagnostic and decision-making that occurs between knowing and doing. This quick reference explores when interleaving is most useful, when to use caution, what it can look like across workplace learning contexts, and practical questions for deciding whether it belongs in your design. One important principle: interleaving works best when learners already have enough foundational knowledge to benefit from comparing and discriminating among meaningful alternatives. That shifts the focus from applying a learning technique to designing practice that more closely represents the demands of performance. Take a look at one learning experience in your organization.
