After weeks of building and refining their ventures, the finalists took the stage to present their progress and answer questions about what comes next. Congratulations to PolaSight, The Lithium Company and Hi Holo, our three winners. And to every finalist: thank you for the ambition and hard work you brought to this program. Thank you to Dmitry Kurin, CEO of Constructor Start, for leading the program. We’re also grateful to our jury members Dr. SB Serg Bell, Jochen Berger, Anatoly Knyazev, Jorn Eiting van Liempt, Kirill Tatarinov, Alexander Sirois, Arian Alikhani, Ines Bergmann-Nolting, Valentino Jadriško and Aleksandr Nechaev for their time and expertise. Kurt is a five-time CEO who has contributed to 12 successful exits — including three IPOs and nine acquisitions, collectively valued at approximately $100 billion. His experience spans Microsoft, Parallels, MongoDB and other technology companies. At Microsoft, Kurt built and led a product management team for SQL Server, a business generating more than $1.5 billion in revenue. At Parallels, he helped scale the company to $100 million in revenue and 1.5 million paying customers across 100+ countries. Today, as CEO of Virtuozzo, he is focused on the next generation of cloud and AI infrastructure. He also serves as Constructor Start GTM Advisor. Ahead of Constructor Start Demo Day, we asked Kurt two questions that are particularly relevant for DeepTech founders: what separates a technically impressive solution from a market-defining product, and how should founders balance long-term technological ambition with the need to find an early commercial entry point? Here are his answers. 1. You’ve helped turn technically strong technologies into scalable products, from MongoDB to cloud infrastructure. What signals tell you that a technology has the potential to become a market-defining product, rather than remain just a technically impressive solution? In my experience, it starts with a product concept or vision that is different enough from others to get people genuinely excited, such as a new data model or a whole new level of efficiency or flexibility for cloud infrastructure that provides a leap forward in experience, performance, or another meaningful capability – not just a nice-to-have incremental improvement, but something rather dramatic. Next, it’s the market that decides the concept is valuable, so it’s critical to get the word out in clever ways to get the trials, feedback, and adoption to prove the market values the product or service. 2. For DeepTech founders, how do you balance long-term technological ambition with the need to find an early commercial entry point? I’ve been involved in operating systems, databases, and mobile platforms, but others have gone much deeper. I think serious focus upfront is critical for DeepTech and beyond. If the new product concept is attractive enough, many adopters will be okay with missing features or integrations for now, at least. Remembering this can help you stay focused rather than slow you down. It’s helpful to have a draft business model early on regarding pricing and sales approach and such, even if it will change later. Further, I’m a big fan of lower pricing early on for adoption and maximum customer referrals when you need them most.
