If you already have an account there, I’d appreciate your support: https://lnkd.in/e7FYpUep The impetus for doing this: we work with literally thousands of startups, and one of the most frequent questions we get from founders is: “How much should I be paying myself?” And there really just isn’t a good resource to help answer that question—folks kinda make it up as they go. So we set out to change that: we surveyed 500+ startup founders to capture that data for you, and put it together into the Founder Salary Report, 2022 edition. I hope you like it!

After being passed over for the role of CEO, Stewart left Applebees to become the CEO of IHOP and then acquired Applebees for $2.1 billion. In her time at what became DineEquity, she implemented a franchise-driven business model that led IHOP through 18 consecutive quarters of growth. She still sits on various boards in the food and beverage industry and has recently started her own wellness-focused organization. Talk about a success story! 💪 👉 Mind-blowing Facts

Francesco Barbera posted thisDo You Need A Trademark Registration? Early stage companies need to be prudent about their legal spend, and not every company needs a registered trademark. But. For companies with plans for regional, national or international reach, trademark registrations are a very, very good idea. This is especially true for consumer-facing requiring capital outlays for collateral like packaging. For companies like this, changing a brand after the fact can be enormously costly and even fatal to the business. A trademark registration is relatively inexpensive and at the same time offers some critical benefits - both offensive and defensive in nature. Offensively, the process enables clients to ensure their brand is distinctive and defensible enough to stand out in the marketplace and to be effectively enforced against others. Defensively, the process helps clients ensure their brands will not inadvertently infringe on other marks or be challenged at a later date by well funded market participants. By registering early, companies can ensure they are investing in a distinctive brand with a solid legal foundation — one that will support national and international scalability and protect capital outlays, while sidestep costly trademark disputes.

Much of this assumes a static universe of ways sophisticated legal counsel add value. AI expands the frontiers of how we can help. Large firms, which are filled with extraordinarily skilled practitioners, will find ways to add far more value -- because AI extends all of our capabilities. I would not bet against elite large firms - or elite smaller firms. My bet is human productivity and innovation will accelerate and multiply and skilled and experienced practitioners who can support the resulting innovation are going to (continue to) thrive.

Turning it into standard practice is the work. We're launching at Climate Week and looking forward to building this global effort with partners. Come join us!Francesco Barbera reacted on thisThe cement industry is the fourth-largest CO₂ emitter on Earth, surpassed only by China, the United States, and India. Yet very little funding goes into cleaning up the sector - heavy industry, which includes steel and cement, receives roughly 2.6% of all climate foundation funding. We are excited to launch Aggregate, a new time-bound, thesis-driven philanthropic fund at Renaissance Philanthropy, to build critical mass for clean cement, making low-carbon cement and concrete commercially viable at scale by clearing the barriers that stall market adoption. Made possible by $10.2 million in anchor funding from Builders Vision Philanthropy, Aggregate is led by Trisha Miller, Program Director at Renaissance Philanthropy. The industry knows how to make lower-carbon cement, but the market to buy it doesn’t yet exist at scale. Aggregate has two core aims: 1. Turn technological progress into supply and demand for low-carbon cement and concrete in global markets 2. Demonstrate that markets can adopt these solutions at scale Over five years, Aggregate will build a series of regional accelerators and deploy a portfolio of interventions, including harmonized codes and standards, demand aggregation, catalytic capital, and enhanced performance testing and technical capacity. They've been watching arguments. They've often been law clerks. They've been briefing cases, and they've been doing [or watching] moot courts... So all of those things are ways that a younger lawyer can prepare him or herself to get that opportunity. But it's on me and the other partners in... the appellate bar to make sure we are creating opportunities and advocating for people to get them." Francesco Barbera liked thisFrancesco Barbera liked thisThe easy portfolio dream is dead. Three NED roles. 60 days a year. £240k. The Times ran a piece yesterday saying FTSE 100 non‑execs now earn a median £81k for around 20 days’ work a year. It sounds like the perfect endgame. Then you read the small print. First, it’s rarely only 20 days of work. Board packs have ballooned, a huge amount of prep is now required. Next comes the liability. In April, a “passive” NED at Wyelands Bank was fined £72,000 personally for failing to exercise due skill, care and diligence – essentially for nodding along while the board got it wrong. Almost the whole annual fee gone in one hit. That £81k isn’t a salary. It’s the price tag on your 30‑year reputation. I have huge respect for my friends on Boards. You’re on the frontline of cyber, AI, ESG and culture risks that barely existed a decade ago. But respect doesn’t pay regulatory fines. If I were joining a Board today, I wouldn’t sign without The Director’s Shield – five protections every NED should quietly check before they say yes: 1. Independent advice, not just “company lawyers” A written right to take independent professional advice at the company’s expense when you judge it necessary. Governance guidance already anticipates this – but it needs to be in your appointment letter, not just in a policy. 2. Unfiltered access to Internal Audit The Head of Internal Audit should have a direct, private reporting line to the Audit Committee chair, with scheduled private sessions in the calendar. If risk is pre‑digested by management before it hits the board pack, you are flying blind. 3. The right to see the raw numbers Not just glossy dashboards. A practical right to look at underlying books, records and key reports when something feels off. You can’t discharge your duties on summaries alone, and UK law and practice recognise that. 4. Protection for dissent Your appointment letter should make it clear that constructive challenge and recorded dissent are part of the role, not grounds to ease you out. Challenge is a core duty, not a nuisance. 5. Transparency on D&O cover Full sight of the D&O policy – especially any “conduct” exclusions or limits on regulatory cover – ideally reviewed with your own adviser. Too many directors find the gaps only after the investigation starts. If a Chair tells you these are “unnecessary”? That’s a red flag. They don’t want a guardian of the company. They want a future scapegoat. For current NEDs: which of these do you actually have – and what have you added yourself? For aspiring NEDs: would having this Shield change your “yes” when the call comes? #Governance #NED #Boardroom #RiskManagement

Francesco Barbera liked thisFrancesco Barbera liked this🦁🇺🇸 AT MONSIGNOR FARRELL, “NEVER FORGET” ISN’T JUST SOMETHING WE SAY. IT’S SOMETHING WE LIVE. 🇺🇸🦁 Before our Varsity Football home opener against St. Peter’s, we took time to recognize and honor the heroes among us — our first responders and members of the United States Armed Forces, including Farrell alumni, parents, faculty, coaches and friends who have served, who continue to serve, and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice. For us, Never Forget must always be more than words. It means remembering their courage, honoring their service and sacrifice, and making sure the next generation understands the debt of gratitude we owe to those who protect our communities and defend our freedom. Then it was time for football, as our Lions went on to earn a 38–0 victory over St. Peter’s. A memorable night at Monsignor Farrell — one rooted in faith, gratitude, service and pride. A special thank you to Director of Communications Greg Guastavino ’94, Director of Alumni Affairs Pete Kennedy ’12, and Head Football Coach Rocco Del Priore ’05 for their hard work and dedication in organizing such a meaningful event. We remember. We honor. We never forget. 🇺🇸🦁
