Arthur Bedel 💳 ♻️ shared this🇪🇺 How Europeans actually pay in 2026. 🇬🇧 UK : PayPal → Google Wallet → Wise → Remitly → Taptap Send 🇩🇪 Germany : PayPal → Google Wallet → Sparkasse → Wero → Wise 🇫🇷 France : Wero → PayPal → Swile → Google Wallet → Edenred 🇪🇸 Spain : Google Wallet → PayPal → Correos Prepago → Remitly → Wise 🇮🇹 Italy : PayPal → Google Wallet → Satispay → Nexi → Postepay Three signals worth understanding. Wero ranks #1 in France and barely appears anywhere else. The European payment network built to challenge PayPal is dominant in its home market and almost invisible across the rest of the continent. Pan-European distribution is harder than it looks. PayPal sits in the top 2 of every country except Spain. After years of pressure from Apple Pay, neobanks and BNPL players, PayPal's 25-year distribution advantage is still intact across Europe. UK and Spain both have remittance apps in their top 5. Remitly, Wise and Taptap Send reflect who actually lives in those countries and what they actually need. The most downloaded payment app in a market tells you more about its population than its technology. Europe has no single payment winner. Anyone building a pan-European product needs a country-by-country strategy, not a continental one. Arthur Bedel 💳 ♻️ shared this🚨🇮🇳 JUST-IN: Apple Pay is officially live in India today. Axis Bank, Visa and Mastercard credit card holders can now tap to pay across millions of merchants: Zomato, Blinkit, Croma, Tata 1mg, Reliance brands and Apple Store locations among the first to go live. No PIN. No OTP. Face ID or Touch ID. Done. The payment infrastructure behind it: Mastercard and Visa tokenisation means your card number is never stored on your device, never shared with Apple, never transmitted to the merchant. A unique cryptographic token fires on every transaction. PSPs already integrated at launch : Razorpay, Paytm, Pine Labs, JUSPAY, Cashfree, PayU, BillDesk, Mswipe Technologies Pvt. Ltd. The merchant network will expand fast from here. 🌏 India is a $3 trillion digital payments market dominated by UPI at over 80% of transaction volume. Apple Pay is not entering to compete with UPI. It is entering to own the NFC contactless tap at the physical terminal, the one moment UPI does not cover natively. Axis Bank is the first partner. HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank are already in discussions. Apple Pay now operates in more than 90 countries. India, one of the last major holdouts, just joined. Arthur Bedel 💳 ♻️ shared this🚨 Japan owes 230% of its GDP. The US owes 125%. France owes 117%. The global debt map for 2025 just dropped and the numbers are worth understanding. The global debt-to-GDP ratio rose from 92.4% in 2024 to 94.7% in 2025. Still below the 2020 record of 98.7%, but the direction is clear. The countries worth watching: 🇯🇵 Japan : 230%. The highest among major economies. Debt held mostly by Japanese citizens and institutions, which is why it has not triggered a crisis despite the staggering ratio. But an aging population and decades of deflation make this a structural time bomb. 🇸🇬 Singapore : 176%. This one is different. Singapore borrows to invest in sovereign wealth funds like GIC and Temasek. The debt generates returns. It is a financial strategy, not a fiscal problem. 🇺🇸 United States : 125%. The largest absolute debt load on the planet at $36T+. Military spending, social programs and tax cuts over decades built this. The dollar as global reserve currency is the only reason this equation still works. 🇬🇷 Greece : 147%. Down from 210% in 2020. Real progress after years of austerity. Italy at 137% is in the same trajectory, slow improvement after decades of structural weakness. 🇫🇷 France : 117%. France has not balanced its budget since 1970. Every government has spent more than it collected for 55 consecutive years. The deficit is structural. 🇨🇳 China : 96%. Up 8 percentage points in one year, the largest annual increase among major economies. The fastest deterioration on this map. 🇺🇦 Ukraine : 109%. Up 18.9 percentage points in 2025. The direct fiscal cost of an ongoing war. The global debt picture is not collapsing, a rising GDP offsets some of the accumulation. What is worrying is the direction in the countries with the largest absolute numbers: the US and France are both moving the wrong way at a time when interest rates remain elevated. Arthur Bedel 💳 ♻️ shared this🚨 Latin America's 10 largest tech companies. 6 are Brazilian. 7 are in fintech or payments. ① Mercado Libre 🇦🇷 $89B → e-commerce and payments across all of LATAM. ② Nubank 🇧🇷 $66B → 110M+ customers across Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. ③ XP Inc.. 🇧🇷 $10B → Brazil's largest investment platform and brokerage. ④ iFood 🇧🇷 $5.4B → Brazil's dominant food delivery app. Acquired by Prosus. ⑤ Rappi 🇨🇴 $5.3B → Colombia's on-demand delivery and super-app. ⑥ QuintoAndar 🇧🇷 $5.1B → Brazilian real estate platform for renting and buying. ⑦ C6 Bank 🇧🇷 $5B → Brazilian digital bank. Part-owned by JPMorgan. ⑧ Banco Plata 🇲🇽 $5B → Mexican credit card and digital banking startup. ⑨ dLocal 🇺🇾 $4.1B → cross-border payments processor for emerging markets. ⑩ TOTVS 🇧🇷 $3.8B → Brazil's largest business software and ERP provider. Three things worth understanding on this list. Mercado Libre at $89B is in a category of its own. Its payments arm Mercado Pago processes more volume than most European payment companies and runs across 18 countries. The e-commerce platform and the payment network feed each other in a flywheel that took 25 years to build. Nubank at $66B with $16.3B in 2025 revenue is the most profitable neobank in the world. It started with one credit card in Brazil in 2013. It now competes with the largest banks in Latin America across three countries. C6 Bank is the one most people outside Brazil miss. $5B valuation, part-owned by J.P. Morgan. A digital bank with a full banking licence operating inside the world's most advanced instant payment ecosystem — Pix. The pattern across this list: Brazil built the most sophisticated fintech ecosystem outside of the US and China. Pix, a government-built instant payment infrastructure, gave every player the same rails and forced competition on product and distribution instead. Arthur Bedel 💳 ♻️ shared thisStripe cannot win in Europe That is what I keep hearing across European fintech events... "The big international players can't do this." The GM of BPCE Payment Services Antoine Grimaud, on why sovereign payment methods are their moat. Years of expertise on Cartes Bancaires, now being ported to Wero - they were first to launch it in e-commerce in France - and eventually to the digital euro. His point isn't that Stripe and Adyen lack the engineering. ➡️ It's that their approach is global by design and sovereign schemes are the opposite of global. 👉 The part that stuck with me: instant payments pull volume away from cards and card performance is what Payplug and BPCE Payment Services built its name on. They're backing the thing that erodes their own strength. 👀 So, moat, or head start? Full interview soon exclusively on my channel

Sustained profitability through 2024, 2025 and 2026 with expanding margins. 🇺🇸 The US acceleration is the signal worth watching. US processing volumes up 120% year to date. The US now represents 20% of total payment volumes, a market where Checkout.com is competing directly with Stripe for the world's biggest digital merchants and winning share. The numbers behind the momentum : → 1,700+ enterprise merchants on the platform. → US volumes up 120% year to date. → Expanding into Payouts, Issuing and Business Accounts. → Aggressive push into AI and agentic payments. Arthur Bedel 💳 ♻️ shared thisMastercard splits the fee with 3 other players 🆚 Amex keeps it all. Every other card network splits the merchant fee between the issuer, the acquirer and the network. Amex plays all three roles on the same transaction. One fee. One house. Zero sharing. The rewards are not generosity. 💳 The Platinum card costs $895 a year and comes with lounges, travel credits and points. Those benefits justify the higher merchant rate and the higher annual fee at the same time. The rewards program is the commercial engine, not the cost center. American Express Q2 2026 results: → $10.16B from merchants. Up 9%. → $2.86B from cardholders in annual fees alone. Up 15%. → $4.65B in interest income on $229.5B in balances. Up 11%. → $19.64B total revenue. $3.11B net income. The card fee line growing at 15% is the signal most people miss. Annual fees are recession-proof. Merchant discount falls when spending slows. Interest income moves with rates and credit cycles. Fees compound regardless. Amex is deliberately shifting more revenue toward that line every quarter. For anyone building in payments: the most durable position in a transaction is owning every layer of it. Which engine carries Amex furthest over the next three years: fees, merchant discount or lending? Arthur Bedel 💳 ♻️ reacted on thisArthur Bedel 💳 ♻️ reacted on thisThis week I joined Openreserve as Chief Payments Officer. For most of my career I've sat on the other side of the table from banks. At Adyen, at Checkout.com, building Meridian, and most recently running AppBrilliance, I was the payments company that needed one. Not against them. Next to them. That meant a lot of building around the bank. Pre-funded buffers. Cut-off times. Collection accounts. A wire sent late on a Friday that turned into Monday's problem. The rails have evolved. RTP and FedNow never close. Stablecoins settle on Sundays. Tokenized deposits are bringing bank money onchain. The balance sheet behind the rails hasn't caught up, and that's where the critical work is now. Openreserve Bank, N.A. (in organization) is a chance to build that from the inside: a bank designed so money can be held, earning, and ready to move when it's needed, on whichever rail fits. I am beyond excited to build alongside the exceptional team already together at Openreserve. If the gap between money you're owed and money you can use is costing you, I want to hear how. Openreserve Bank, N.A. (In Organization) received conditional approval from the OCC on September 2, 2026. Deposit insurance is pending FDIC approval. Nothing here is an offer of banking services, and no deposits are FDIC insured.

Fintech Wrap Up
18K followers
Welcome to the new edition of the Fintech Wrap Up — where payments, crypto, and banking strategy all collided this week in some pretty telling ways. What happened? Crypto is pushing back toward a $3T market, led (still) by Bitcoin nearing a jaw-dropping $2T and Ethereum holding its ground at ~$391B. The quieter headline, though, is stablecoins: USDT ($184B) and USDC ($76B) are now giants in their own right, powering payments, trading, and cross-border money movement. At the same time, Circle launched Arc, its own Layer-1, signalling that payments-native players are done waiting for “general-purpose” blockchains to fit their needs. Meanwhile, instant cross-border payment rails are accelerating, challenging SWIFT on speed — though not (yet) on scale or trust. So what? Across crypto, AI, and payments, the pattern is the same: infrastructure is becoming more specialized and more opinionated. Stablecoins are concentrating liquidity on just a few chains, driving incentives and partnerships. Banks are stuck on the lower rungs of the Agentic AI Staircase — chatbots and copilots — while real value only appears once AI starts running end-to-end workflows. And in cross-border payments, the real-time payments market is projected to jump from $34B in 2025 to $284B by 2032, creating a genuine race between instant rails and upgraded traditional networks. Here’s my take. This isn’t a story about disruption replacing incumbents — it’s about convergence. Instant rails won’t kill SWIFT; they’ll force it to get better. AI won’t magically transform banks; disciplined workflow automation will. And crypto’s future looks less speculative and more utilitarian, driven by stablecoins, interoperability, and incentives rather than hype. Bonus insight: ecosystems like Portugal show that strong fintech hubs don’t need noise — just talent, global ambition, and regulatory pragmatism. The bottom line: fintech is entering its “grown-up” phase. Less buzzwords, more plumbing — and the teams that understand infrastructure, incentives, and execution are the ones quietly pulling ahead. #fintech #payments #crypto https://lnkd.in/du-HEYe2

Open Banking conversations usually focus on regulation, APIs and fintech innovation. But there’s an invisible layer that makes the whole ecosystem work. Trust infrastructure. At Open Banking Expo Canada, Paulo Barbosa of Banfico explained why directory services are a critical component of Open Finance frameworks. They answer fundamental questions every bank must ask: 🔸 Is this fintech licensed? 🔸 Can it access this data? 🔸 Can the ecosystem trust this participant? Without that foundation, scaling Open Banking becomes far more complex. Read the insight ↓ https://lnkd.in/ejZkDw-q Andrej Wellnitz

🚨𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗡: Checkout.com's US 🇺🇸 bank charter is now live. This is a bigger step than most people will notice. Checkout. com's Merchant Acquirer Limited Purpose Bank (MALPB) charter in Georgia is now live and operational, the third and final phase after application and approval. Here's what that gives them: • Direct access to card networks • Less reliance on third-party intermediaries • More control across the full payment lifecycle • A foundation to ship enterprise products faster For years, most acquirers plugged into the card networks through a sponsor bank. Checkout. com is now doing it directly, in the world's largest digital economy. That changes the economics. Fewer layers between the merchant and the network usually means better performance, more resilience, and room to build products (including AI-powered payment optimization) closer to the rails. 💬 "Going live on the MALPB is a defining step in our US journey. As we begin processing through the charter, we're bringing more control into the payment lifecycle," said Jordan Reynolds, MALPB CEO and Head of North American Banking at Checkout.com. The company is also scaling teams across San Francisco, Atlanta and New York to build closer to its US customers. A serious commitment to North America, and a clear signal of where enterprise acquiring is heading. Source/more info: https://lnkd.in/dSMisKeu Find this helpful? Created in 2025 as part of Visa Inc.’s strategy to grow in the Brazilian market and advance Open Finance services, Visa Conecta previously obtained approval to operate as a payment institution, including as an electronic money issuer and payment initiator. 🚀 Argentines Transform Vacation Payments in Brazil with PIX 📱 In a context of high inflation and exchange restrictions in Argentina, thousands of tourists are adopting Brazil's PIX system to make quick and efficient transactions during their vacations. This instant payment tool, launched by the Central Bank of Brazil in 2020, allows free and secure transfers in seconds, attracting Argentines seeking alternatives to the complicated local regulations. 💡 The Origin of this Trend PIX has gained popularity among Argentines due to its simplicity and low cost. Many convert pesos to cryptocurrencies or stablecoins in local exchanges, transfer funds to digital wallets, and then convert to Brazilian reais to use PIX in shops, hotels, and tourist services. This avoids the high fees of credit cards and ATM withdrawal limits. 🔍 Technical Keys of the Process - 📲 Integration with Apps: Platforms like Binance or Mercado Pago facilitate the conversion of crypto to PIX, with biometric verification for greater security. - ⚡ Speed and Efficiency: Transactions are completed in less than 10 seconds, 24/7, surpassing traditional systems like TED or DOC in Brazil. - 🛡️ Security Measures: PIX incorporates multi-factor authentication and daily limits to prevent fraud, aligning with global fintech standards. - 🌍 Regional Impact: This adoption fosters interoperability between Latin American economies, boosting financial digitalization in the region. This innovation not only solves immediate problems for Argentine travelers but also highlights the potential of digital payments in emerging economies. Are you exploring similar fintech solutions? 🚀 The history of Payments just changed. Last December, from Córdoba, Argentina, we launched something that had never existed before. With the support of friends, clients, financial institutions, leading merchants, global brands, and the local business community, we created the first payment rail in history that unlocks investments without savings. For the first time ever, millions of people around the globe can start investing without savings — simply by spending. No debt. No complex financial products. No need to save first. Before launching, throughout 2025, we completed more than 6,000 real transactions with real users — not simulations, not pilots on paper, but live transactions. Those transactions gave us the foundation and confidence to launch in December. Every payment stops being just an expense and becomes an automatic investment with daily returns. We built a new payment rail beyond credit and debit. • Credit = paying with debt • Debit = paying with money • UX = paying while investing Since our launch, the market response has been clear. We have already signed 10 Letters of Intent with brands in Argentina, giving us access to more than 140 stores across the country, including merchants in electronics, food, and mass consumption — with some among the top household brands in Argentina. And now, the real question: Do you see the size of this change? Do you see what happens when investing is no longer a privilege, but a built-in experience of everyday life? We are just getting started. And we are aiming global scale. We didn’t build another fintech. We built the future of payments. No more debt. No more financial exclusion. Just your money in your account — where spending and investing happen at the same time. The change has already begun. ✍
