AFRINIC is the African Registry for Internet Numbers. Its role is to effeiciently Manage Internet Number resources for Africa Region, alike the four other continents which have their own RIRs (ARIN, APNIC, LACNIC, RIPE-NCC). AFRINIC operates as a not-for-profit organisation with a membership model. Today AfriNIc provides Internet Number resources to 54 countries in its service region we currently serve 1000 Network Operators accross the continent.

At the 7th ATU Conference of Plenipotentiaries (CPL-26) in Abuja, AFRINIC Board Chairman Prof. Adewole Adedokun called on African governments to work more closely with AFRINIC by supporting IPv6 readiness, strengthening Internet governance, and advancing secure Internet infrastructure. It is a full week for us in Kampala, this week. Nearly 50 delegates are taking part in the Uganda IPv6 Certification & Technical Training Programme, an intensive course designed to build both the skills and confidence needed to move IPv6 from theory into live networks. Workonline is proud to support the programme, with our own Patrick Okui joining the opening panel discussion on “Accelerating IPv6 Adoption in Uganda: Skills, Certification, Deployment and the Road Ahead.” Drawing on his experience as a network operator, Patrick spoke about what it takes to move beyond IPv6-capable equipment and trained teams towards successful real-world deployment. The technology may be ready, but progress also requires clear ownership, practical planning, controlled pilots, testing and the willingness to begin. Thank you to the organisers Uganda DNS Forum, Internet Society and AFRINIC-The Regional Internet Registry for Africa for bringing this programme to Uganda and for creating a space where operators, regulators, government departments, universities and technology organisations can tackle the practical realities of IPv6 adoption together. The strong representation from across Uganda’s digital ecosystem shows how important this conversation has become, with participants from Wananchi Group Uganda, CSquared Uganda, TowerCo of Africa Uganda, SimbaNET Uganda, Uganda Communications Commission, Makerere University, Soroti University, NTT DATA Middle East and Africa and many more. Jacquiline Mwai, Beryl Achieng and Patrick are on the ground in full force throughout the week, connecting with organisations across the market and discussing Uganda’s evolving connectivity landscape, regional interconnection, peering and the infrastructure needed to support continued digital growth. It will take supportive policies, prepared public infrastructure, clear sector expectations and network operators who can turn readiness into real deployment. Another successful week of building Africa's Internet capacity! From 13–17 July 2026, AFRINIC partnered with Technology Service Providers Association Of Kenya (TESPOK) to equip Internet professionals with hands-on IPv6 skills that will support the continued growth and resilience of Africa's Internet. Thank you to TESPOK and all participants for making the training a success. Together, we're preparing Africa's networks for the future.
TESPOK, in partnership with AFRINIC-The Regional Internet Registry for Africa, successfully hosted a week-long IPv6 Training from 13th to 17th July 2026, bringing together Internet professionals to strengthen their knowledge and practical skills in IPv6 deployment and adoption. Facilitated by Bashir Mudeheri of AFRINIC, the training featured hands-on sessions, insightful discussions, and practical learning designed to support the growth of a more resilient and future-ready Internet ecosystem. نحو تعميم استعمال بروتوكول IPv6 في الجزائر ... ماذا تعني هذه التقنية؟ أشرف وزير البريد والمواصلات السلكية واللاسلكية اليوم في لقاء متخصص حول مستقبل الإنترنت في الجزائر، نُظم بالتعاون مع الهيئة الإفريقية المسؤولة عن توزيع عناوين الإنترنت (AFRINIC)، بحضور الأعضاء الجزائريين في الهيئة وكافة الفاعلين في القطاع الرقمي في الجزائر. وشهد اللقاء مناقشة عدة مواضيع تتعلق بكيفية إدارة الإنترنت وحماية الموارد الرقمية للبلاد، إضافة إلى استعراض مكانة الجزائر ودورها في الهيئات الدولية والإفريقية المختصة بالإنترنت. ومن بين أبرز المواضيع التي طُرحت الانتقال إلى بروتوكول الإنترنت الجديد IPv6. فكما يحتاج كل منزل إلى عنوان خاص به، يحتاج كل جهاز متصل بالإنترنت (هاتف، حاسوب، كاميرا، جهاز ذكي...) إلى عنوان رقمي خاص به. ومع الزيادة الكبيرة في عدد الأجهزة حول العالم، أصبحت عناوين (IPv4) غير كافية، لذلك تم تطوير IPv6 الذي يوفر عدداً هائلاً من العناوين يكفي لمليارات الأجهزة الجديدة مستقبلاً. بالنسبة للمستخدمين الجزائريين، يساهم اعتماد IPv6 في تحسين قدرة شبكات الإنترنت على استيعاب عدد أكبر من الأجهزة ، مع تزايد استخدام الهواتف الذكية والحواسيب والأجهزة المتصلة بالإنترنت. كما يدعم تطوير الخدمات الإلكترونية والتطبيقات الحديثة، ويساعد في تحسين كفاءة الاتصال بالشبكة في بعض الحالات. ويُعد هذا البروتوكول أساساً مهماً لتوسيع استخدام التقنيات المستقبلية مثل المدن الذكية وإنترنت الأشياء، فضلاً عن ضمان جاهزية البنية التحتية الرقمية لمواكبة النمو المتواصل للخدمات الرقمية خلال السنوات المقبلة. وأكد الوزير أن الجزائر تعمل على تحديث بنيتها الرقمية وتعزيز حضورها في الهيئات الدولية المختصة بالإنترنت، مع تسريع اعتماد التقنيات الحديثة مثل IPv6، بهدف تحسين جودة الخدمات الرقمية، تعزيز أمن الشبكات، ودعم السيادة الرقمية الوطنية.
