BugVM is a free open source alternative to closed, commercial, and now discontinued RoboVM.
It all started on October 22, 2015 when RoboVM officially announced its intention to close the source code and that RoboVM has been acquired by other company. RoboVM was eventually shut down for good on April 15, 2016. A fork of RoboVM was created to maintain the free open source status.
This fork is BugVM.

Current Status
Command line compiler, IntelliJ IDE plugin and BugVM Studio are available.
BugVM can be used to develop a native iOS app with Java. Java code is compiled into bytecode, and then the bytecode is translated into native machine code, resulting native app. The app runs on the simulator, on the device, and can be packaged for the App Store submission.
Debugger and Interface Builder are not supported.
Documentation is very limited. In the meantime, RoboVM 1.8.0 documentation may be used as a reference.
