Access & data model
A Roll-Up is an aggregate property: its whole purpose is to combine the data of the child
websites and apps it groups together. Because of this, granting a user view access to a
Roll-Up is what gives them the aggregated reporting of its child sites — even when that user
has not been granted access to the child sites individually. This is by design and is the
behaviour described by the in-app notice "your other reports include data from all websites
within this Roll-up".
What this means in practice:
- Aggregated and segmented reports include child data by design. When a Roll-Up viewer
runs a standard report on the Roll-Up — including a segmented
report — Matomo archives and returns the combined data of the child sites belonging to the
Roll-Up. Applying a narrow segment (e.g. a single visitor or IP) can therefore surface that
individual's data from a child site, even if the user cannot open that child site directly.
This is expected: a Roll-Up report is only meaningful if it can see the data it aggregates.
- Real-time visitor-log detail is still access-checked per child. The detailed visitor log
(
Live.getLastVisitsDetails) and visitor profile (Live.getVisitorProfile) only return data
for child sites the user can access.
If you do not want a user to see a given site's data at all, do not add that site to a
Roll-Up the user can view, and grant access at the individual-site level instead. Treat view
access on a Roll-Up as equivalent to view access on the aggregate of everything it contains.
