Dr. Asit K Barma shared thisBIM Trichy: Where Knowledge Meets Timeless Wisdom Nestled between two of South India's greatest spiritual landmarks—the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam and the Ucchi Pillaiyar Temple atop the Rockfort—the campus subtly echoes the philosophical journey these sacred spaces have long embodied. Srirangam Temple’s concentric prakaras (enclosures) and layered spaces guide devotees through successive levels of reflection before reaching the sanctum. In temple architecture, the inward journey represents the movement from the outer world to the inner self—from distraction to enlightenment. Viewed from above, BIM’s academic block unfolds around a powerful central courtyard. Like Srirangam’s concentric spiritual journey, which leads inward to the sanctum, every wing of BIM’s academic block gently converges on its courtyard—the Brahmasthana, a space of balance, dialogue, and reflection. BIM's architecture arranges classrooms, faculty offices, collaborative spaces, and administrative areas around this central core, reinforcing the idea that every academic journey ultimately converges on shared learning and collective excellence. At BIM, students enter through the ceremonial forecourt and gradually move toward the academic heart of the institution, symbolizing a progression from curiosity to knowledge, from knowledge to wisdom, and from wisdom to responsible leadership. The courtyard thus becomes more than an architectural space; it is the campus's intellectual and social heart, where ideas, cultures, disciplines, and aspirations converge. Echoing the Rockfort's Ascent: If Srirangam represents the inward journey, the Rockfort Temple symbolizes the upward one. She is also tasked with setting up a Centre for Applied Econometrics, which is the foundation of today's AI initiatives. While most debates are on the criteria of reservation- economic status, social groups, etc.- basically trying to establish equity in access, no one talks about democratization of success. Bharathidasan Institute of Management Tiruchirapalli, despite being a 100% self-funded institution, voluntarily chose to follow TN Govt's reservation system in line with the thoughts of its founding Chairman Bharat Ratna C Subramanian. It did not just stop there. Our ever-evolving contextual program architecture, unique campus life, and support from the faculty and staff ensure democratization of success in terms of academic (CGPA) and placement (CTC) outcomes. We analyzed the last five years' data at BIM to establish how we convert a heterogeneous group (in terms of their performance at the point of entry) into a homogeneous group (in terms of academic and placement outcomes) at the end of the two-year MBA program. Dr. Asit K Barma shared thisThere are moments in life that quietly bring you full circle. My father served in the Posts & Telegraphs (P&T) Department, now known as India Post. As a child, I would hear stories of dedication, public service, and the immense respect the organization commanded. Back then, there was only one Postmaster General in the entire state—a position that, to my young mind, seemed the pinnacle of achievement. Naturally, my childhood dream was simple: one day, I would become a Postmaster General. Life, however, has its own plans. As I grew older, my aspirations evolved, and my journey took me in a different direction—into academia, leadership, and institution building. Yet, destiny has a beautiful way of reconnecting us with our roots. It was deeply nostalgic and profoundly humbling to be felicitated by Smt. Nirmala Devi, IPoS, Postmaster General, Central Region, Tamil Nadu, during the two-day Management Development Program that Bharathidasan Institute of Management Tiruchirapalli had the privilege of conducting for officers of India Post. As I stood there, I couldn't help but think of my father. I wished he had been there to witness the moment. What once was a childhood dream had returned—not in the way I had imagined, but in a way that was perhaps even more meaningful. Life has a remarkable way of completing circles. The program itself reinforced my admiration for an institution that is quietly reinventing itself. India Post is undergoing one of the most significant public-sector transformations in the country. Far beyond its traditional role as a postal service, it is emerging as India's trusted public platform for logistics, financial inclusion, and citizen-centric digital services, touching millions of lives across urban and rural India alike. Some journeys begin with childhood dreams. Others reveal, years later, that those dreams never really leave us—they simply find a different path back to our hearts. Dr. Asit K Barma shared thisA few weeks ago, I was honored to serve as Chief Guest at the Golden Jubilee celebration of IEEE India, Madras Section. In my speech, I shared that history remembers civilizations not merely by their rulers but by their technologies. The steam engine created the Industrial Revolution. Electricity transformed industry and daily life. The internet has connected humanity. The smartphone placed the world's knowledge in our pockets. Today, humanity is witnessing the convergence of several revolutionary technologies, including Agentic AI, biotechnology, advanced materials, quantum computing, space technology, autonomous systems, and renewable energy. For perhaps the first time in human history, multiple technological revolutions are occurring simultaneously. This convergence is creating unprecedented opportunities. IEEE’s scope, therefore, is expanding beyond electrical and electronics engineering to establish standards for interoperability and the overall human good. Industry 5.0 marks the return of the Human Being. Human beings are to be at the center. The goal is not to replace people. The goal is to amplify human capability. Industry 5.0 is about collaboration between humans and intelligent machines. Empathy enhanced by data. Innovation accelerated by automation. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐈🍸 OpenAI has cut GPT-5.6 Luna’s Standard, short-context API price by 𝟖𝟎%: Input: $1.00 → $0.20 per million tokens Output: $6.00 → $1.20 Terra is 𝟐𝟎% 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫: input $2.50 → $2; output $15 → $12. Sol's Standard, short-context price stays $5/$30. 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞 replaces Priority Processing, offering up to 𝟐.𝟓× Standard speed at 𝟐× the short-context price, using the same GPT-5.6 Sol model. 1M tokens represent roughly 750,000 words varying by content and tokenisation. But the real metric is cost per successfully completed task. How was this achieved? 𝟏. 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲. GPT-5.6 was trained to optimise task success and efficiency, taking a more direct path and doing more useful work per token. 𝟐. 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. GPT-5.6 Sol in Codex analysed production traffic and improved load balancing across geography, capacity, accelerator type, model-instance load, context length and cache availability. It also optimised the forward pass by identifying computation that could be precomputed, skipped or parallelised—reducing memory movement, synchronisation and inefficient data layouts that leave GPUs idle. 𝟑. 𝐆𝐏𝐔 𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬. Within a human-led process, Sol autonomously rewrote production kernels in OpenAI-maintained Triton and Gluon. With broader kernel advances, this cut end-to-end serving cost by 𝟐𝟎%. OpenAI validated correctness with the open-source FpSan Floating-Point Sanitizer. 𝟒. 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠. A smaller draft model proposes several tokens; the primary model verifies them in parallel. Accepted proposals allow multiple tokens from one primary-model pass, reducing sequential computation. Sol ran hundreds of speculator experiments, monitored training and intervened during hardware failures and instability. Result: 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟓% higher token-generation efficiency. 𝟓. 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝-𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠. Sol helped tune batching, sharding and key-value-cache management for different prompt lengths, output lengths, batch sizes, cache-hit rates and query patterns. 𝟔. 𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. OpenAI’s Rust orchestration layer reduces repeated work through deferred discovery, 10,000-token default tool-output caps, prompt caching, append-only model-visible history and deterministic tool ordering—preserving reusable prompt prefixes across multi-step agent loops. This was not merely a discount. It reflects gains across: model → routing → scheduling → forward pass → kernels → decoding → KV cache → agentic harness Use evaluations to assign each step the least expensive model meeting its quality, latency and risk threshold. Sol can resolve ambiguity and plan; Luna can execute well-specified, high-volume work. It's been a month of adjusting to a completely new pace — case discussions, deadlines, and constant learning packed into every single day. I've already had my first real taste of how classroom concepts translate into actual business thinking. The first few weeks threw a lot at me at once — cases to read overnight, teams to gel with, and simulations where every decision had a consequence I didn't see coming. It's been less about having answers and more about learning to think out loud, defend a position, and change my mind when someone made a better argument. What's stood out most is how much I'm learning from the people around me — classmates who approach the same problem completely differently, and professors who don't let you settle for a surface-level answer. Grateful for the support system back home that made this move possible and excited for everything. I am delighted to be part of a consulting team (comprising Prof. Alok Kumar Rai , Director and Ramya T. Venkateswaran ) from Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta Calcutta that has been engaged by Indian Oil Corporation Limited to prepare a Pre-Execution Detailed Project Report (DPR) for developing an integrated truckers’ facilities and fueling ecosystem around Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata What makes this assignment particularly exciting is that it goes far beyond preparing a conventional DPR. It combines operations management, supply chain analytics, market research, GIS-based location analysis, financial modelling, stakeholder engagement and business model innovation to answer a fundamental question: How can we create commercially viable infrastructure that also improves the lives of truck drivers while enhancing logistics efficiency? The study includes field surveys, focus group discussions, traffic and demand analysis, facility planning, revenue modelling and ecosystem design to develop an implementation-ready roadmap. Truck drivers are the backbone of India’s supply chains. Well-designed truckers’ hubs can reduce turnaround time, improve road safety, enhance driver welfare and create sustainable commercial opportunities for multiple stakeholders. Projects like these demonstrate how academic institutions can contribute beyond classrooms—bringing rigorous analytical methods, interdisciplinary expertise and evidence-based decision-making to solve complex national challenges. My sincere thanks to Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, and Prof. Alok Kumar Rai , Director IIM Calcutta for the opportunity to contribute to this important initiative.
