[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested in 1983 in Norwegian. Unadapted borrowing from English AI (“artificial intelligence”), an initialism of artificial intelligence. The English term artificial intelligence was coined in 1955 by John McCarthy.
English artificial is from Middle English artificial (“artificial, man-made”), from Old French artificial, from Latin artificiālis (“artificial”), from Latin artificium (“art, craft, skill”), ultimately involving ars (“art, skill, craft”) and facere (“to make, do”). ars ultimately derives from Proto-Indo-European *h₂er- (“to fit, join”), while facere ultimately derives from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁- (“to put, place”).
English intelligence is from Middle English intelligence, from Old French intelligence, from Latin intellegentia (“understanding, intelligence”), from Latin intellegō (“to understand, perceive”).
