Reformat numbered lists

[edit]

Could someone look for awkwardly formatted numbered lists, and replace them with standard numbering? I'm meaning something like this edit. It's not cosmetic; look at the before and after versions. Nyttend (talk) 22:34, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

In order for AWB to be used, you need to provide a list of target pages and an objective criteria for the changes that you'd like to see enacted: "awkward" does not pass muster on that. VanIsaac, GHTV contrabout 23:10, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
This is made quite clear from the diffs. Nyttend (talk) 20:10, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Nyttend, the issue is that there isn't a good way to search the database for "awkard lists". If you can think of one, let us know. LittlePuppers (talk) 19:10, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
You can't search the database for new lines beginning with an asterisk and a numeral, or an asterisk and a space and a numeral? Nyttend (talk) 19:48, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thought on this some more. Asterisks get weird because search wants to treat them as a wildcard... regex does okay, something like insource:/\* ?0?1\. / gives 3650 results. Skimming through a few of those, half or slightly more seem to be edge cases (lists with entries like "1." "2a." "2b."; source comments; markup in templates; weird indentation and formatting; noncontiguous or backward lists). So, not trivial, but maybe possible to clean some of them up with AWB. LittlePuppers (talk) 20:29, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Beware of the ordinal dot causing false positives such as Austro-Hungarian Navy#Structure. Certes (talk) 17:27, 18 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah interesting, good to keep in mind. (I've also seen it used, on occasion, as a mark of precision.)
This is still in the back of my mind (no promises but I'm thinking about it), however the page at PERM to renew AWB rights is a bit backlogged. LittlePuppers (talk) 17:32, 18 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Doing... at least some of these. LittlePuppers (talk) 19:43, 5 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

No, please do not incorrectly number lists that are numbered in music scores. These are not simply sequential lists. For example, overtures, entr'actes and finales may not be numbered at all, and often, composers will number something, for example, ...8, 9, 9a, 9b, 10, etc. Exchanging bullet points for sequential numbering is simply misnumbering. However, in the example provided by Nyttend, above, I am not sure what the correct numbering should be. I am suspicious of the before version. We should look at the actual score for the real numbering. I suspect that the first item is unnumbered, as are the recitatives, or else the recitatives and arias are numbered 1 and 1a, 2 and 2a or similar. -- Ssilvers (talk) 05:56, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Ssilvers, thanks for catching that. His Excellency (opera) did slip through. I went back and checked and as far as I can tell I haven't done likewise to any other pages in Category:Operas. I have avoided reformatting anything with the nuances noted above (letters, unnumbered list items, etc.), including most of the musical and theatrical works I've come across.
Nyttend, I've done a couple hundred of these which do seem straightforward, but it's quickly reaching the point where it doesn't seem worthwhile to go much further because I don't have an easy way to filter out the cases where this change would be incorrect (of which there are many) or is not straightforward (whether that would require adjusting formatting/template placement so that issues don't ensue, or fancy CSS to e.g. allow backward lists). LittlePuppers (talk) 21:18, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Found one more incorrect change in Category:Musical theatre which I undid. LittlePuppers (talk) 21:35, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! -- Ssilvers (talk) 03:55, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Create redirects for all pages with "Nauru" in the title

[edit]

I am unfamiliar with this tool so I'm not entirely sure it can be used in this way but if it can I would live to request that all main space pages containing the word "Nauru" have a redirect created that uses Naoero (the countries new official name) instead. based on a browse of the results when searching for titles containing Nauru, it makes scene for a redirect to be created in all insistence except Nauru, Tanzania, a unrelated village that should be excluded from this. Might be a bit early to say that...Demographics of Nauru? What do we do with say, Nauruan language?, 'dei-Naoero Language'? Neils51 (talk) 11:49, 23 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I already manually created a redirect to Nauruan language (Naoero language) but dei-Naoero language might also need to be created if you have evidence it is called that PharaohCrab speak𓀁 works𓀨 14:36, 23 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I just applied a blanket Nauru→Naoeru, so any title with "Nauruan" systematically has a redirect with "Naoeruan" now. If "Naoero" is the proper adjectival form, I feel like "Naoeruan" is probably going to be common enough that we probably should implement "Naoero" as an additional redirect, rather than moving the newly created redirects. VanIsaac, GHTV contrabout 22:14, 23 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't think these redirects should preemptively be created... "Naoeruan" has less than 10 Google Search results currently. 1234qwer1234qwer4 05:24, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I definitely approached this from a Redirects are WP:CHEAP perspective that as the new official spelling gets recognized, you are going to end up with changed links and hypercorrections getting implemented, and it would be better to have those already extant than not. I certainly appreciate that other opinions may disagree, but I feel like with the recency of the spelling change, that 10 results is probably going to be significantly expanding. Yeah, there's certainly a bit of WP:CRYSTAL in here, but I don't think it's that much of a stretch. I'll leave the possibility of WP:CITOGENESIS as an academic exercise. VanIsaac, GHTV contrabout 05:48, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Actually, "Naoeroan" shows 200 hits. If all the redirects are fixed to use an o instead of a u, I have no issue with these redirects. 1234qwer1234qwer4 13:51, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
FYI, it looks like these were all done under Naoeru, not Naoero. As far as I am aware the former is a typo and they should all actually be under the latter. ~ oklopfer (💬︎) 13:22, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
that seems like a major error PharaohCrab speak𓀁 works𓀨 13:43, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Unless somebody wants to solve this differently, I can use a script to move all of these without leaving redirects later today. 1234qwer1234qwer4 13:54, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Dear lord, please do. VanIsaac, GHTV contrabout 15:29, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Correction: 14 other pages where the correct spelling already existed: Vice President of Naoeru, Law of Naoeru, Naoeru Museum, Naoeru Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Naoeru, List of speakers of the Parliament of Naoeru, Cabinet of Naoeru, Coat of arms of Naoeru, Constitution of Naoeru, Naoeru International Airport, Naoeru Bwiema, Parliament of Naoeru, Flag of Naoeru, President of Naoeru. @Vanisaac, might want to G7 them (not sure if they meet R3). 1234qwer1234qwer4 23:57, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

I ran a query and of the 641 entries there are 253 pages and 388 redirects. The list can be found here. The flag is '0' for pages and '1' for redirects. Neils51 (talk) 05:41, 25 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Same steps, different target

[edit]

@Vanisaac, since you did this, maybe you can create redirects for the British spelling of sulphur? I think intitle:/(s|^S)ulf(ur|i[dt]e|ate|on(ate|ic))/ -intitle:/(s|^S)ulph(ur|i[dt]e|ate|on(ate|ic))/ -hastemplate:"Automatic taxobox" -hastemplate:"Speciesbox" (apart from redirects) only has Sulfur (song), Sulfur (band), Sulfur (EP) and Sulfur (magazine) as false positives. 1234qwer1234qwer4 09:25, 30 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Different topic, so I've split it out, revert me if you'd rather it stay with the above. Primefac (talk) 10:17, 30 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Replace now-deleted aliases of Template:Distinguish

[edit]

Per consensus on this RfD, the template redirects {{Dist}} (transclusions), {{Notconfuse}} (transclusions), and {{Not confuse}} (transclusions), which were redirects to {{Distinguish}}, were deleted. However, there are still hundreds of articles and some other pages using these template redirects, which were not replaced before deletion. These should be fixed. Spaces before <ref> tags

[edit]

This search (insource:/\. \<ref\>/; which only searches for spaces after a full stop) returns almost 60,000 pages. The spaces before the <ref> tags should be removed per MOS:REFSPACE. (sample diff) – a wondrous raven (talk) 21:55, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

There's already a rule for this in Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos ("space before ref"). Ponor (talk) 22:11, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Could someone still do a run to fix all of them at once? – a wondrous raven (talk) 23:37, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Not really, this would be a cosmetic edit. They get sorted, along with other stuff, when general fixes are applied. Neils51 (talk) 05:23, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Removing a rendered space between a full stop and a ref tag is definitely not a cosmetic edit. It changes the rendered page. I don't know why there is not a bot that fixes these; maybe there is an edge-case context issue. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:01, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, yes, you are correct. I was looking at some where the space was removed at the end of a line. I would expect pushback if there was a bot attempt. Maybe the rule could be AWB intrinsic as I think many users turn general fixes off, based on historical comment. Neils51 (talk) 14:03, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
This is one of AWB's genfixes, but 60k is a ton for a single person to do. It's not a cosmetic edit but is still considered an issue, so I could probably put in a bot run to fix these. Primefac (talk) 11:23, 19 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I know @Sdkb had a similar bot task, probably for a different subset.
Also, you should account for other punctuation, named references, and multiple spaces. Linebreaks also cause spaces to appear.
  • insource:/[.,;]( |\n)\<ref/ returns 115,000 pages
  • insource:/[.,;]  +\<ref/ (with two spaces, though I had to replace one with an nbsp for display) returns another 1000 (you can combine the two but the search times out)
  • insource:/[.,;] +\n\<ref/ returns another 6500 (again, combining the two leads to a timeout)
  • insource:/\<\/ref\>( |\n)\<ref/ returns 80,700 pages, plus more for the same variations as above.
Slightly unrelated but insource:/\<\/ref\>[A-Za-z]/ times out at over 1000 results. I've seen spaces being added before references without adding another one after them, so maybe just add this fix to the same task. 1234qwer1234qwer4 16:40, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, this is SdkbBot task 1. If there is desire to expand the task to cover the instances it's not currently catching, I could look into why and expand the query if safe to do so. Sdkb talk 16:48, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'd be in support of this; I fix these manually whenever I run across them (they bother me more than they should), and it would nice not to have to. LittlePuppers (talk) 16:55, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
AWB's genfix uses (?<=[a-z\.,;]) \<ref so I'm basically searching for that. Sdkb, genuinely curious how we have this many hits if the bot's running - is it a search issue or is it just that the bot doesn't run this task often (I see it uses AWB)? If the latter is the case it might be worth having a second bot of only to cut down the number of hits at any given point. Primefac (talk) 18:10, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
From the BRFA and recent edits, it currently only searches for refs after quotation marks and brackets. LittlePuppers (talk) 18:16, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh! Right, I misread the ." with the " being part of a quote not the parameter. Shows you what I get for skimming. Primefac (talk) 18:31, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, if I recall correctly that was just a provision to reduce the chance it encountered any errors. But if the broader query has long part of GENFIX then it's presumably safe to use it.
Is there a specific place I should post or process to follow to affirm that it's permissable for me to use the broader query, or is this discussion sufficient? Sdkb talk 18:35, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I would file a BRFA since it's a fair bit of an expansion of the existing task, but yes this would be the place to point to indicate that there is a need/consensus for one to be run. Primefac (talk) 18:36, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Primefac, is it correct that the genfix replacement does not account for multiple spaces or linebreaks? 1234qwer1234qwer4 22:11, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Looks like. Primefac (talk) 22:23, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Unless multiple spaces are replaced by single ones somewhere else in genfixes. I realise now that in the case of a linebreak, the regexp should also check that the previous line does not start with *, #, ; or :, since
* text
<ref>citation</ref>
will render differently from
* text<ref>citation</ref>
and while a paragraph should not start with a citation, there could be text after the citation in the same line that was not intended to be a list element. 1234qwer1234qwer4 23:10, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
There are some situations where I think removing a space between a word and a ref could be less helpful. insource:/[^a-z]see \<ref/ has 319 results, for instance, and removing the space does not look like the correct fix – while there are also 245 for insource:/[^a-z]see\<ref/ without a space, that is most likely due to genfixes being applied on those pages by other users. 1234qwer1234qwer4 23:14, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I also noticed that this exact problem extends to spaces between a comma and a ref tag in "lists" of references. @Sdkb, would you consider extending your bot task to (single or multiple) spaces after a full stop, a closing parenthesis or a preceding closing ref tag as a start? 1234qwer1234qwer4 04:17, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just an unrelated note to most of the discussion above, but with the number of pages needing to be edited does it make sense to have multiple bots editing? I ask only because last weekend I filed a BRFA... (yes, I didn't think about the fact that it was the weekend and filed about an hour before the above conversation really kicked off) The bot has finished its trial for . and ,, so that would knock out about half of the possible targets if Skdb wants to take the others. Totally not fussed otherwise, just going through BRFAs and remembered I put it on hold pending me bringing it up here. Primefac (talk) 09:02, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Adding a template to multiple articles

[edit]

Is it possible to add a template to multiple articles without much manual input using AWB? I require Template:Members of the Riksdag, 2026–2030 to be added to all articles in Category:Members of the Riksdag 2026–2030. There are currently 260 articles in this category. A handful already have the template. Obi2canibe (talk) 21:02, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yes, use the "Append" option in the More tab to add the template, and make sure the "sort metadata after" option is ticked (and make sure you have genfixes on). Primefac (talk) 21:08, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
