Waipiro Stream

[edit]

After creating the Kumutoto Stream article are you interested in creating any more culverted stream articles? Because I've finally found out what the green things near the cenotaph are: they represent the Waipiro (or Wai Piro, apparently) Stream. Can't find many sources but thought you might be interested, don't know. Panamitsu ✨ 08:17, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Oh I must have walked over those a hundred times without realising what they were for! Funny you should ask, as I'd recently begun looking into the Waimāpihi Stream (which runs down Aro Valley, and then under Vivian/Cuba/Te Aro Park) as a potential article.
After that I'd definitely be keen to eventually get around to Waipiro and Waitangi too (though anyone's welcome to beat me to it – Waitangi Park already has info on the stream that could be used as a basis for an article) nil nz 09:23, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Interesting! Panamitsu ✨ 09:45, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Couple of months late, but I finally got around to starting a draft at Draft:Waipiro Stream. Sources are pretty scarce though, but I'm sure there'll be enough once I delve into some archives.
I also found out that there's a second stream – Tutaenui – that also runs down Bowen St and beneath Parliament, and has a rather unsavoury Māori name. It's a shame it looks like there are even less sources on it, cos Did you know... that "great amounts of excrement" runs through New Zealand's parliament? would make for a great hook. New Page Patrol Newsletter - May 2026

[edit]

Hello Nil NZ,

New Page Review queue November 2025 - May 2026

Backlog update

At the time of this message, there are 15,282 articles and 32,951 redirects awaiting review.

After the January–February drive the article backlog was reduced to 15,179 articles and the redirect backlog to 19,053 respectively. Great job! However, both queues are growing rapidly and any additional reviews are highly appreciated.

2024 and 2025 NPP Awards

JTtheOG was selected as the NPP reviewer of the year for both 2024 and 2025, for reviewing the most articles amongst all reviewers.

Hey man im josh and MPGuy2824 won the Redirect Ninja Master Award for 2024 and 2025 respectively, for reviewing the most redirects.

Overall in 2024, one Platinum, two Gold, eight Silver, 12 Bronze and 45 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 66 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year. In 2025, one Platinum, ten Silver, 13 Bronze and 38 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 38 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year.

BoyTheKingCanDance, Rosiestep, SunDawn, and Vanderwaalforces were inducted into the NPP Hall of Fame for having two separate years of 2,000+ article reviews.

January–February backlog drive

The experimental two-month long backlog drive concluded with 183 reviewers patrolling over 27,761 articles and 35,309 redirects, earning over 36,836 points. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 6,484.6 points in this drive.

May backlog drive

An article-only backlog drive is currently underway. We are hoping to make a big dent in the backlog. You can read more about it or join at Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Backlog drives/May 2026.

PageTriage

An attempt was made to get the New Pages Feed to sort by date marked as reviewed instead of date created. However we had to revert it due to bugs. We may try again in the future. You can subscribe to the Phabricator ticket if you're interested in following along.

The DYK Barnstar
By the power vested in me by nobody in particular, I hereby award you the DYK barnstar for creating the page Kumutoto Stream and successfully nominating it for DYK. It's a joy to see this little Wellington secret get a bit more attention. AxonsArachnida (talk) 07:49, 1 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

DYK for Kumutoto Stream

[edit]

On 2 June 2026, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Kumutoto Stream, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that "no one told the eels to stop acting like eels" beneath the streets of Wellington? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Kumutoto Stream. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Kumutoto Stream), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to nominate it.

Request for gift article

[edit]

Hello! First of all, congrats on getting your DYK article for Kumutoto Stream. This was a very interesting read!

I saw the bottom of your user page noting you can gift articles. Two days ago, I created an article about a board game created by two New Zealanders, Endeavor: Deep Sea (EDS). It is in fact going through the DYK process at the moment. As part of my research for this article, one article I found was this one from The Post which relates to Wellycon and at some stage mentions EDS was the featured board game. If there is any chance you could gift me this article this would be very helpful. I am not sure exactly how it works, so let me know if anything further is needed from me. Thank you. JaumeBG (talk) 09:57, 2 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you!! More than happy to help with that – the Post don't do gift urls, but I'll email you a plain text copy instead. It doesn't look like it says too much about EDS, but hopefully it's still of use. In solidarity, nil nz 10:34, 2 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for sending that through. That's much appreciated. Yes, I was able to use that reference on the article for Wellycon, so that's useful. And it's interesting to read the article anyway as not too much media reported on Wellycon this year it seems. Thanks — have a good day! JaumeBG (talk) 10:55, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for AfC work + apology

Hi Nil: I wanted to thank you for your work reviewing Articles For Creation. I also wanted to apologize re: "Decline of Draft: St. Martin Unity Flag". You are fully correct. I got cranky about fixing ref formatting, I'll use a maintenance tag in the future. :) CopyleftEverything (talk) 02:03, 7 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @CopyleftEverything, no worries at all! Understandably, AfC can feel like a slog at times, so there's no harm in skipping drafts and leaving them in the queue – I've certainly had moments when I've started a review, got halfway through and gone "what tf is this?" before deciding I did not have the brain power to deal with it in that moment😅 In solidarity, nil nz 04:48, 7 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Request on 14:48:31, 10 June 2026 for assistance on AfC submission by Knowyourenemy40

[edit]

I'm trying to create a Wiki page for one of the Gaslight Anthem members, but for some reason the sources aren't being seen as sufficient. However, the other Gaslight Anthem members that have Wiki pages published use some of the same sources. I'm not sure why this particular member is getting flagged. As a fan of the band, I was looking to establish pages for each member, and there's plenty of evidence that this person is a part of the band.

Knowyourenemy40 (talk) 14:48, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Knowyourenemy40, so the issue here is WP:BANDMEMBER, which is our inclusion guidelines for articles about band members. Essentially, it needs to be demonstrated that Horowitz meets our inclusion criteria for musicians ("notability") as an individual, separate to that of the band. If the only reason he is notable is because he's a member of Gaslight Anthem, then he is unlikely to qualify for a standalone page. If he is notable as an individual (e.g. he releases a solo project, or he's the subject of multiple indepth profiles from independent reliable sources), then a standalone page may be appropriate.
I had a look at the two other band members who already had their own pages, and see that they were both created in 2010; Wikipedia had much poorer processes and criteria back then, so using other pages as a point of comparison doesn't always help. If it was submitted today, the page for Alex Rosamilia would also not be published.
My recommendation would be to continue improving the page for Gaslight Anthem, and in the future, when more sources may exist, creating a separate article for Horowitz. In solidarity, nil nz 02:07, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question

[edit]

Hi. Sorry, a bit late on this, but I noticed you reverted my edit on Mr. Skin. I changed the "Type of site" descriptor to "Adult website" because I noticed that was the descriptor on the article of the website's spin-off site Mr. Man, so I thought the main site should have the same descriptor to be consistent. Should the piped link on the Mr. Man article also be removed? ~2026-38668-22 (talk) 21:10, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello, no worries! I'd say so by my reading of WP:EUPHEMISM: "internet pornography" is a lot more obvious/less vague than "adult website" is when describing the site's contents. In solidarity, nil nz 21:59, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Articles for Creation backlog drive

[edit]

Hello Nil NZ:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive in August!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than a month of outstanding reviews from the current 3+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 August 2026 through 31 August 2026.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 5000 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:37, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Good article nominations RfC

[edit]

Hi Nil NZ,

There is an ongoing Request for Comment (RfC) at Wikipedia:Good article nominations/August 2026 RfC, which you may be interested in because in the past year, you have nominated or reviewed more than one good article nomination. This message has also been sent to all subscribers to the Good Article Gazette. The RfC contains many proposals (33 at the time of writing), which are split into the following categories: nominators, reviewers, reviews, volunteer roles, reviewing initiatives, and others. However, you are more than welcome to add any proposals of your own that you wish to put to the community.

By the end of September, all the proposals will have been closed by an uninvolved editor, either as a consensus for one of the options or with no consensus. At this point, editors will be invited again to develop these proposals into coherent policy and implement them.

Thank you for your contributions to the good articles project, and I look forward to your input! (in solidarity), JacobTheRox(talk|contributions) 16:03, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

AfC August Backlog Drive: Only ten days left!

[edit]
Our pending drafts!

Hi Nil NZ, thanks for participating in the Articles for Creation August Backlog Drive! We've done amazing work so far, dropping the backlog by more than 3000 drafts already. We have around 1300 drafts outstanding, and we need your help to get that down to zero in the next 10 days. We can do this, but we need all hands on deck to help make it happen – if everyone who signed up to the drive reviewed just 1–2 drafts a day for the next ten days, we'd be down to zero in no time! A list of the pending drafts can be found at WP:AFCSORT, where you can select submissions in your area of interest, or you can find a random submission here. [edit]

On 23 August 2026, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Waimāpihi Stream, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a once-sacred stream, buried in the 1880s, was rediscovered during the construction of a petrol station forecourt (pictured)? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Waimāpihi Stream. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (Waimāpihi Stream), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to nominate it.

New pages patrol September 2026 Backlog drive

[edit]
September 2026 Backlog Drive | New pages patrol
  • On 1 September 2026, a one-month backlog drive for new pages patrol will begin at a particularly important time for NPP.
  • The backlog has now passed 30,000 unreviewed articles, a level that has been described in current NPP discussions as exceptionally high and potentially difficult to overcome through normal reviewing alone. Backlog drives are one of the few measures that have historically produced a noticeable reduction in the backlog, so the participation of as many active patrollers as possible will matter this month.
  • If you can review during September, please make articles your priority. Every article that is reviewed is a meaningful reduction in the backlog. With the queue at its current size, even a relatively small increase in the number of articles each patroller reviews can add up to a substantial difference over the course of the month.
  • This is a hybrid drive, so redirect reviewing is still included. Redirects can be a useful way for newer patrollers to get comfortable with NPP and can help people build up to reviewing articles. However, the main goal of this drive is to tackle the article backlog, and experienced patrollers are particularly encouraged to spend as much of their available reviewing time on articles as they can.
  • Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled.
  • Each article review will earn 1 point, while each redirect review will earn 0.2 points.
  • Streak awards will be given out based on consistently hitting point thresholds for each week of the drive.
  • Barnstars will also be granted for re-reviewing articles previously reviewed by other patrollers during the drive.
  • If you have been thinking about doing more NPP, this is an especially good month to jump in. Whether you can review a few pages or hundreds, every review helps. And if you are already an active patroller, please consider whether you can put in some additional time during September to help bring the backlog back under control.
  • Interested in taking part? Sign up here.

Declined article : Omar Pitras Waqar

[edit]

Hi this article has been hung up numerous times now, it's been 12+ months and every time there is a new reason given, and even when the changes are made to reflect standards, a new reason is given again. First few times was technical detail issues, tone was incorrect, then removal of external links to the artists page, correction of wording, This time it has been declined because of chatgpt? This article was not written using AI, it has detailed sources, all reputable academic and established media. The article is about a real historical person connected to a specific art movement. Is there a way you can edit it so that the wording is perfect? Not sure what to do at this point. It seems like no changes will be good enough, and that this is being stonewalled for some other reason. ~2026-46869-82 (talk) 10:32, 27 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @~2026-46869-82, sorry that you're feeling stonewalled here, and i totally sympathise that the AfC process can be frustrating like this. I don't believe the article was written entirely by an AI, but parts of it certainly read like they were created (or polished) with an LLM, as they show many WP:AISIGNS (specifically WP:AIWEASEL & WP:AIATTR), especially in the last three sections. Although I didn't use them in my assessment, GPTZero gives a 100% AI score (past the URL in here), while Pangram detects it as human written, aside from the sections that I also had concerns about.
Not AI-related, but the "Academic reception" section seems mostly focussed on Taqwacore as a genre, rather than Waqar as an artist. Normally I'd prefer to see significant coverage that focusses on the artist himself. but I think, however, an argument could be made that he passes WP:MUSICBIO#7, as a prominent representative of taqwacore as a style. If you're able to rewrite the aforementioned sections, I'm happy to have another look at it. Alternatively, all the sourcing you've collected here would easily pass the notability criteria for an article on taqwacore as a genre. In solidarity, nil nz 23:31, 27 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

reviewing Draft:Weliton Menário Costa

[edit]

Hi Nil NZ, thank you for reviewing Draft:Weliton Menário Costa. I have substantially revised and resubmitted it.

The revision does not rely on WP:NACADEMIC; I removed CV-style details and focused on sourced biographical material. Regarding WP:BLP1E, SBS featured Menário Costa in 2019, before Dance Your PhD, and the independent 2024 coverage discusses his research, background and artistic work as well as the award. I added a limited number of later institutional sources only to document continued public-facing work in 2025–26, not as independent evidence of notability.

If you have time, I would appreciate any further guidance on whether you think the BLP1E concern remains after this revision. Thank you again. Wmc345 (talk) 03:55, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Wmc345, I didn't consider the 2019 SBS piece, as while is provides some biographical details, it isn't significant coverage of Costa himself. That is, the article isn't about Costa or his work as a scholar, but rather is about Latin American students studying in Australia, and he's just interviewed as one example of these students.
Personally, I don't think that it's there still, but as it's resubmitted it I'll leave it for another volunteer to provide a second opinion :) In solidarity, nil nz 04:22, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nil,

First of all just want to thank you for taking the time to look over my AfC Draft:Amillionsons. Apologies for using an LLM to edit this work, being new to this I wasn’t aware this was against the rules, so lesson learned. After your comments, I visited the help page for some guidance which was extremely useful.

I have since rewritten the draft in my own words, checked the sources and re submitted. If you have any further comments on further edits, I would really appreciate input.

Hi Nil NZ, you accepted this page at AfC. I was just wondering if you'd seen any reliable sources that give sigcov. It's currently got a BA thesis on there and an academic article. Neither give sigcov. I've had a quick look on google scholar and can't find anything that is more than a trivial mention.Boynamedsue (talk) 08:55, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hey @Boynamedsue, this was mainly a AGF accept that the offline source contained sigcov, and that other sources likely existed after confirming on google that it is indeed a legitimate indigenous musical instrument. Given that, I believed that it would probably have a reasonable chance of surviving an AfD discussion so accepted it following WP:AFCPURPOSE. Totally accept that the current sourcing is sparse though! There are quite a few hits in a gbook search, but my Spanish isn't quite up to scratch to analyse those. nil nz 22:09, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for getting back to me. I don't doubt the GF from the author of the article in this case, though a surprising number of people who create articles don't know much about WP:GNG. I'll have a look at those book links and see if a couple of them add up to WP:SIGCOV. Thanks again.Boynamedsue (talk) 19:00, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello. It seems I accidentally pressed "Submit the draft for review" for Draft:Sam Brittenden.

Anyway, I just fact-checked everything and brushed it up. I'd be happy to have it reviewed as is. ~2026-50511-81 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 04:44, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

That's no problem – you're more than welcome to continue working on the draft while it waits for review. As I was the reviewer that moved it to draft space, I'll leave the review for someone else rather than checking it again myself, as it's generally recommended that we don't review articles twice in a row. I think PARAKANYAA is wrong and it easily passed WP:GNG. It is not just WP:ROUTINE, but someone widely covered internationally.
What do I do now?
Draft:Sam Brittenden ~2026-50511-81 (talk) 12:37, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi @~2026-50511-81, I don't have time to check through the current version of the draft, but I see it's been declined twice for LLM signs since my last review (when it was moved to draft space). HelpfulRacoon has left some great advice that I would echo; anything that wasn't completely written yourself should be removed, including anything originally generated by LLM that you've copyedited to sound less like AI. A short, human written article is preferred over a detailed, AI-generated one.
@PARAKANYAA is probably one of our foremost experts on Wikipedia when it comes to biographies about the far-right and their ilk, and is much more knowledgeable than I when it comes to the notability of people accused of crimes. That said, I would tend to agree with you that much of the coverage is at a national / international level (alongside more localised publications like The Press and ODT), but I'm keen to hear Para's thoughts. nil nz 03:16, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
This still reads much like AI to me and the article is full of WP:AISIGNS. From top to bottom, the prose is full of these issues, especially WP:OVERATTRIBUTION. AI prose is not allowed onwiki now no matter how much you punch it up after the fact. This was the major reason I declined.
Further, the whole structuring is very non encyclopedic, it's not written as a biography at all. There's basically no information about him despite him being the nominal subject. The first section is an arrest from when he was a teenager, and then another arrest, and then passing mentions; all of the coverage just listing various incidents with no connections, not appropriate for a biography, and he is not anywhere close to passing WP:NCRIME. For BLP reasons especially we are rather restrictive on this kind of thing. If this person was American I do not think there is any chance this kind of thing would survive AfD. There were hundreds of individual small time American skinheads in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s who got comparable levels of coverage and who are not anywhere close to deserving an article. "teenager threatens somebody" is not notability-proving. I'm not a New Zealander, though.
The Press source is the best one there and gives a more rounded look and if there were more like that (and the article wasn't written the way it is) I'd see this article having a future. PARAKANYAA (talk) 03:30, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Stop vandalizing the article about Chilean Americans.

[edit]

Chile has no record of large-scale immigration from Asia, contrary to your false assumptions; Japanese, Korean, and Chinese populations number only a few thousand at most, and there are barely a few hundred Indians—nothing more. We are not related to any ethnic group from that region. Until you provide evidence—which I doubt you can, given that I am Chilean myself—I will revert every one of your edits to the article. ~2026-52190-43 (talk) 03:57, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @~2026-52190-43, all I asked of you was to write an explanation for your edits with an edit summary.
