Awards

The AWM’s awards programs recognize and showcase the work of exceptional women and men. These honors span the career spectrum—from the Schafer Prize for undergraduate research to the Noether Lecture for a career of distinguished research—as well as spanning the ways in which we can support the mathematical sciences: research, teaching, mentorship, and volunteerism. Through essay contests, awards, travel grants, research prizes, invited lectures, and the AWM Fellow Award, the AWM celebrates the achievements of women in mathematics, increasing professional awareness of these contributions.

Prizes

  • Alice T. Schafer Mathematics Prizes recognize women undergraduates who have demonstrated excellence in mathematics. Deadline: September 15
  • AWM Dissertation Prizes honor outstanding dissertations by women mathematical scientists (defended within the past two years). Deadline: September 15
  • AWM Birman Research Prizes highlight exceptional research in topology or geometry by a woman early in her career. Deadline: May 15 of even years
  • AWM Microsoft Research Prizes highlight exceptional research in some area of algebra by a woman early in her career. Deadline: May 15 of odd years
  • AWM Sadosky Research Prizes highlight exceptional research in analysis by a woman early in her career. Deadline: May 15 of odd years
  • Ruth I. Michler Memorial Prizes honor outstanding women who have recently been promoted to Associate Professor as Research Fellows in the Cornell Mathematics Department. Deadline: October 1

Lectures

  • AWM-MAA Etta Zuber Falconer Lectures honor women who have made distinguished contributions to the mathematical sciences or mathematics education.
    Deadline: September 15
  • AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lectures recognize those in the scientific or engineering community whose work highlights the achievement of women in applied or computational mathematics. Deadline: September 15
  • AWM-AMS Emmy Noether Lectures honor women who have made fundamental and sustained contributions to the mathematical sciences. Deadline: September 15

Awards

  • AWM Presidential Recognition Awards recognize those individuals who, or programs that, have significantly increased and/or supported women in mathematics.
  • AWM Service Awards recognize individuals for promoting and supporting women in math through exceptional service to the AWM.
    Deadline: May 15 
  • AWM Student Chapter Awards recognize outstanding achievements by AWM Student Chapters in any of four categories: (1) scientific excellence, (2) outreach, (3) professional development, and (4) funding/sustainability. Deadline: May 15
  • Mary and Alfie Gray Award for Social Justice for the vigorous and imaginative application of the mathematical sciences to advancing the cause of social justice. Deadline: May 15 of even years
  • Gweneth Humphreys Awards recognize outstanding mentorship from math teachers (female or male) who have encouraged female undergrad students to pursue mathematical careers and/or graduate mathematics study. Deadline: May 15
  • Louise Hay Awards recognize outstanding achievement by a woman in any area of mathematics education. Deadline: May 15

Fellows

  • AWM Fellows recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to the support and advancement of women in the mathematical sciences. Deadline: May 15

Contests

  • Student Essay Contests showcase interview-based biographies of contemporary women mathematicians and statisticians, written by middle school, high school, and undergraduate students. Deadline: February 1

Policy for Revocations of AWM Honors or Awards

The AWM will, in its sole and absolute discretion, consider and act on formal, fully documented requests for revocation of an award.  Such requests must provide a clear statement of the alleged serious breach of professional integrity or professional ethics, or of the actions that clearly discourage the participation of women and minorities in mathematics.  Click here for the full Policy.
