Announcements

  • Nature conferences text and the name of the conference, "Meeting the Challenge of Infectious Diseases ina Changing World" with the dates for the conference, from October 14-16 2026, in Manipal India, with all lettering in white, on a background of different cartoons showing DNA, scientists looking down microscopes, a globe, a person with a surgical mask on, viruses, graphs.

Organised by Nature Medicine, Nature Microbiology, Nature Health, Nature Communications and MAHE, this conference will bring together leading voices to discuss global health challenges including emerging pathogens, climate change and antimicrobial resistance, as well as highlighting solutions and advances in surveillance, diagnostics, drug development and vaccination strategies.

  • Silhouettes of people and speech bubbles in different colours

Nature Microbiology presents a Series of Journal Club articles, written by underrepresented author groups, that highlight past and present scientific advances in all areas of microbiology.

  • A network of sensing tech under the sea

Join us in Guangzhou, China to explore the frontiers of marine sensing and digital ocean science, the program will bring together oceanographers, engineers, data scientists, microbiologists and environmental researchers from both academia and industry. It will highlight cutting-edge developments in in situ and remote sensing, autonomous marine robotics, and deep-sea observation systems.

    • Two independent studies identified host species-specific aminopeptidase N as the entry receptor for hedgehog merbecoviruses, revealing convergent receptor use with alphacoronaviruses, but through a distinct binding site. Defining barriers to receptor use across species could help predict future host jumps and emerging transmission risks at the wildlife–veterinary–human interface.

    • In this Perspective, Levin and Wang give a brief history of bacterial growth rate and discuss how it is connected to nutrient availability and macromolecule synthesis, with a focus on (p)ppGpp as a central hub regulating resource allocation and, indirectly, growth rate at the single-cell level.

      Perspective
    • Environmental temperature can be accurately inferred from the DNA composition of microbial communities across marine and soil ecosystems, using machine learning and based on tetranucleotide frequencies. GC content shows an opposing trend to temperature in these environments, associated with differences in nutrient availability.

      Research Briefing
    • Air pollution increases the risk of invasive pneumococcal disease and bacterial lineage changes the timing of that risk, making pathogen genomic diversity an effect modifier.

    • The journey of Mycobacterium tuberculosis between hosts in aerosol droplets has often been viewed as a passive phase in its life cycle. Recent evidence shows that the inevitable desiccation associated with aerosol transmission triggers a program that imperfectly repairs DNA damage, generating genetic diversity and increased recovery of antibiotic-resistant mutants.
