Two new AI-focused megafunds were disclosed Monday. Lightspeed Venture Partners raised “more than $9 billion” for an AI-focused fund, The New York Times reported. Lightspeed has already invested in Anthropic, xAI, and Mistral, which carry a collective valuation of over $400 billion. Then Axios scooped that Dragoneer, which has plowed more than $3 billion into OpenAI, raised a new $4.3 billion fund. Mirroring the trend in venture fundraising, venture capital dollars are being deployed into a more concentrated group of startups. In August, Pitchbook said that 41% of all venture dollars for the year had gone into just ten startups. OpenAI alone made up for 20% of all yearly VC deployment at the time. In 2021, the top ten companies only brought in 6% of overall venture Big VC firms are raising a larger proportion of overall funds to bet on an increasingly narrow set of AI companies. Despite the consolidation, the overall venture capital being deployed into AI has grown quite large — surpassing even an exuberant 2021.

Meta Platforms’ deal to acquire the Singapore-based startup behind Manus, a popular AI agent, values it at more than $2 billion, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal. This gives the startup’s venture capital backers an exit with handsome returns less than a year after the product was launched. For example, Benchmark, which led the startup’s April funding round at a valuation of $500 million, gets to sell its stake just eight months later at more than four times the valuation. The Meta deal offers a big return for the startup’s earliest backer, Chinese venture capital firm ZhenFund. ZhenFund made a seed investment in the startup, Butterfly Effect, in February 2023, at a valuation of just $14 million, when Manus as a product didn’t exist yet and the team was working on an earlier project. ZhenFund, well-known in China for its focus on early-stage startups, participated in all the subsequent funding rounds for Butterfly Effect including this year’s Benchmark-led round. At the time of Meta’s deal, ZhenFund was the startup’s largest outside shareholder with a stake of more than 10%, according to the person. Other significant shareholders—Benchmark, Chinese VC firm HongShan (also known as HSG) and tech giant Tencent—each held a single-digit percentage stake. The acquisition came at an opportune time for the Manus team and its backers. Google’s recent launch of its highly capable Gemini 3 models and other AI products highlighted the tech giant’s strength in agentic AI, raising more questions about the long-term sustainability of independent AI agent startups. https://lnkd.in/dY2XVwMx

Belief Capital’s Kevin Costa closes $20M solo GP fund focused on AI and robotics Kevin Costa, founding partner of #BeliefCapital, has announced the final close of a $20 million solo GP fund targeting pre-seed and seed-stage startups across Europe and the US. The fund will back young, highly technical founders building in AI, robotics, and infrastructure, reflecting Costa’s thesis that small, high-leverage teams are increasingly shaping venture-scale outcomes. Belief Capital plans to invest between $500,000 and $3 million in 10 to 15 companies, typically taking a 5% to 10% ownership stake, with significant follow-on capital reserved. Early portfolio companies include Tallinn-based Ark Robotics, developing an infrastructure layer to connect robot fleets, and New York-based Popcorn, a next-generation telecommunications startup. Limited partners in the fund include general partners from Hummingbird, Point Nine, and Adjacent, alongside founders such as Taavet Hinrikus of Wise and Christian Reber of Pitch, as well as San Francisco-based fund-of-funds GREE. Costa, who has been angel investing since age 19, previously invested at La Famiglia prior to its 2023 merger with General Catalyst and served as head of operations at PetsApp. Belief Capital was also selected as one of 20 emerging funds in Mountside Ventures’ inaugural VC accelerator programme earlier this year.
