Claude’s New Cowork Feature: Letting AI Actually Do Your Work
Claude Code was built for programmers, but people figured out it was also useful for organizing files, making tables, and writing reports. Anthropic packaged those capabilities into Cowork, making them accessible to people who can’t code.
What it can do:
You select a folder on your computer, and Claude can read, edit, and create files inside it.
Sounds simple, but it’s genuinely useful. If your downloads folder is a mess, it can sort and rename everything. If you have expense receipt screenshots, it can pull the data into Excel. If you’ve written messy notes, it can organize them into a first draft.
Unlike regular chat, Cowork makes Claude feel more like a real assistant. You give it a task, it plans the steps, executes them, and keeps you posted. Same technology as Claude Code underneath.
It Gets Stronger!
Cowork connects to integrations like Google Drive and Slack. It has built-in skills for documents and presentations. With the Chrome extension, Claude can even operate web pages.
You don’t have to keep feeding Claude context or manually convert outputs. You can throw multiple tasks at it for parallel processing. Less like chatting, more like leaving notes for a coworker.
Shares Skills With Claude Code:
Cowork reads your CLAUDE.md files and custom Skills. The workflow configurations you’ve built in Claude Code transfer directly. It’s a graphical entry point to the same system.
One catch: Cowork runs in a Linux VM. Skills depending on node_modules or architecture-specific binaries won’t work. Pure text configurations are fine.
Safety Boundaries:
Claude only accesses folders you’ve authorized and asks before bigger actions. But it can misunderstand you. If you say “clean up this folder,” it might delete files. Be specific. Start careful, don’t immediately point it at important files.
Availability:
Research preview, only for Claude Max subscribers on Mac. Windows and cross-device sync coming later.
Still early, but if you’re on Max and Mac, worth trying.
Introducing Cowork: Claude Code for the rest of your work.
Cowork lets you complete non-technical tasks much like how developers use Claude Code.
In Cowork, you give Claude access to a folder on your computer. Claude can then read, edit, or create files in that folder.
Once you've set a task, Claude makes a plan and steadily completes it, looping you in along the way. Claude will ask before taking any significant actions so you can course-correct as needed.
Claude can use your existing connectors, which link Claude to external information. You can also pair Cowork with Claude in Chrome for tasks that need browser access.
Try Cowork to re-organize your downloads, create a spreadsheet from a pile of screenshots, or produce a first draft from scattered notes.
