Summary:
The Director of Tax will oversee all aspects of the company’s tax strategy, compliance, planning, and reporting for Seattle based fast growing energy technology company. This individual will be a key advisor to senior leadership and will ensure the company meets its tax obligations and building out of the tax department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute tax strategies that support business objectives while minimizing risk and maximizing available tax incentives and credits.
- Build, lead, and scale the organization's tax function, including establishing processes, identifying resource needs, and hiring and developing future tax team members as the company grows.
- Serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on tax planning, partnership structuring, regulatory developments, and emerging tax risks.
- Lead all aspects of partnership taxation, including oversight of partnership tax returns, tax capital accounts, partner allocations, basis calculations, and related compliance requirements.
- Direct partnership tax reporting activities, ensuring accurate income and loss allocations, maintenance of LLC member capital accounts, and reconciliation between tax filings and underlying financial records.
- Provide technical leadership on complex partnership tax matters, entity structuring, transactions, and tax planning initiatives.
- Create and implement a long-term vision for the tax function, establishing scalable processes, controls, and governance frameworks to support organizational growth.
- Lead and manage all aspects of federal, state, local, and international tax compliance.
- Oversee the preparation, review, and filing of business entity tax returns, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely compliance.
- Provide leadership over tax accounting and financial statement reporting, including quarterly and annual tax provisions, tax-related disclosures, and GAAP compliance.
- Oversee the collection, analysis, and preparation of financial information required for tax returns, tax provisions, forecasts, budgets, and accounting estimates.
- Manage tax incentive programs, including research and development credits and other available federal, state, and local tax benefits.
- Conduct and oversee technical tax research and prepare memoranda supporting tax positions, transactions, and business initiatives.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and proactively evaluate their impact on the organization.
- Lead federal, state, and local tax audits and examinations, ensuring efficient resolution and risk mitigation.
- Oversee state and local tax (SALT) matters, including compliance, nexus evaluations, exemption certificate management, and multi-state workforce considerations.
- Partner closely with Finance, Legal, Human Resources, and Operations leaders to support compliance requirements, entity structuring, business growth initiatives, and tax planning opportunities.
- Manage external tax advisors, consultants, and service providers while evaluating opportunities to insource capabilities as the tax team expands.
- Lead tax-related projects involving organizational restructuring, business expansion, financing activities, process improvements, and strategic transactions.
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls, documentation standards, and governance practices related to tax reporting and compliance activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA required and national public accounting experience required.
- Public and private company experience preferred.
- Minimum 15 years of broad tax experience: federal, state, and partnership tax required.
- Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills with the ability to assess business and tax impacts.
- Demonstrated success in managing audits, risk, and tax planning in a multinational environment.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Location: Remote - must be able to travel every other month to Seattle, WA HQ.
$250,000 to $265,00 base salary range dependent on experience level. Annual bonus target based on profitability and performance.
