Yiwei Wei liked thisYiwei Wei liked thisAfter an incredibly amazing journey of four years, this is my last week at TikTok. It has been a privilege to work at such an innovative and data-driven company. I had the opportunity to help build the monetization platform from the ground up, enabling tens of billions in ad revenue, and later develop products that serve millions of creators and billions of users. The experience has been truly rewarding. I contributed a bit, made some great friends, and learned a ton. To my leaders, peers, cross-functional partners, and team members: thank you for the journey, and best of luck to you all. It was a tough decision to move on, but I will be cheering for you, and hope to see you again in the future. As an avid user, I look forward to an ever-improving TikTok that continues to inspire creativity and bring joy! I'll be taking a two-month break to figure out what's next. Until then, I will spend the summer with my family, who have given me tremendous support throughout my time working in such a fast-paced environment.

Yiwei Wei liked thisYiwei Wei liked thisDear Colleagues, Yesterday, November 17, 2022, was my last day at Twitter. First, I am so grateful for being there for almost 14 months. I was hired as Staff Engineer for an infrastructure team that owns several critical services. I've worked with very talented engineers there, and I am proud of what this team achieved. I am so sad about how it ended, though. The rich and arrogant guy who bought twitter ended up destroying its excellent working culture based on trust and transparency. He started by not communicating his intention, followed by laying off 50% of the workforce based on unknown metrics. Well, it is his company. He can do whatever he wants. However, what he cannot do is harass and offend employees! And this is precisely what he did. To name a few: after realizing he fired some critical engineers, his team called them back and asked to stay, arrogantly giving 15(!) minutes for the decision. One of his most close new directors publicly stated twitter engineers are 'lazy, needed only for knowledge transfer and will be fired after it is complete.' His testa staff went through public slack channels and purged everyone who was criticizing or even not just accepting Elon's way of dealing with the company. Best engineers were called incompetent for not agreeing with something the new ruler said. Ultimately, Elon decided it was time to let only loyal employees stay. He sent an ultimatum to the workforce requiring them to commit to a 'new hardcore culture, working long hours and weekends' by opening the google form with a single 'Yes, I want to work for Twitter 2.0' google form. This was it! It broke the patience of people, I guess. It broke mine and made me very angry. So angry that I wanted to send a company-wide email convincing people not to sign this. Possible harm he could do to my family by chasing it has stopped me from doing that. Besides, after talking to many people, I was convinced they were already rejecting to sign it en mass. I fired back to infrastructure org's new manager emails, falsely stating, 'All or almost all people are onboard'. I emphasized that if they think so, they will have a wake-up call on Thursday. And I was right, several critical teams are torn down completely, and others are left with 10-20% of the pre-acquisition headcount. Seeing my communication shared by someone on Twitter internal Blind helped me get the publicity I wanted and to understand that people primarily support it. So, company-wide email became unnecessary, taking risks to my beloved ones into account. I am also grateful to two people who helped me to estimate possible risks.
