Rick West reposted thisTake action to ensure your new CPG product is the 1 out of 4 that succeeds. Many thanks to Tom McDonald for sharing a wealth of insight from a career of huge new product launch wins!Rick West reposted this📉 Only 15% to 25% of new CPG item launches actually succeed. Tom McDonald has beaten those odds more consistently than almost anyone in the industry. Over nearly 30 years at P&G he launched Tide Pods, Downy Unstoppables, Febreze, and Swiffer. Today, he runs Walmart and Sam's Club for Bayer Consumer Health, where he leads 5 to 6 new launches every year. In the latest episode of Conversations On Retail, Tom joined Marc Yount and Henry Ho to break down exactly what separates the launches that hit their numbers from the ones that quietly die. He shared the retailers now doubling as test markets, the one distinction that predicts whether a launch survives, the exact week when a product's fate is basically sealed, and his personal list of tactics that guarantee a failed launch. 🎯 Worth the read whether you're planning your next launch or trying to figure out why your last one stalled. 🔗 Full conversation on the Storesight blog. Rick West reposted thisIf you're in NWA, love food, and love meeting people.. you need to download Bēkon.Rick West reposted thisFor a while now, a lot of you have heard me talk about this. Today I get to say — it's real. Bēkon is live. I built it because I genuinely believe we're more isolated than we admit. Not for lack of wanting connection — but because most of the tools we reach for make it easier to stay comfortable. You can order food without leaving your couch, scroll past hundreds of people in seconds, and curate a life that only ever reflects back what you already think. Bēkon is a pushback on that. The idea is simple: tell us when you're free, we match you with a small group, and we seat you at a great restaurant here in NWA. No profile to judge. No agenda. Just food, good people, and whatever conversation happens to show up across the table — including the kind that stretches you a little. Different backgrounds. Different ideas. Different lives. That's not a bug. That's the whole point. This didn't happen alone. To everyone who listened, challenged the idea, contributed time or belief — thank you. You're already woven into what this is. Rick West reposted thisAmazing to get to share the story of Sunflower Fuels in a beautiful space in Lexington. Thanks, Dave Knox for making the connection to Logan Jones and Middle Tech.Rick West reposted thisGabrielle Blocher, CEO of Sunflower Fuels, is building Kentucky's path from coal country to clean energy - one miscanthus planting at a time. Miscanthus is a perennial crop that produces yield for 30+ years from a single planting, grows on reclaimed mine sites, and can serve as feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel, renewable food packaging, and more. Sunflower Fuels is putting it to work on land in Perry County that most would write off as unusable. Gabby comes to this with an unusual background - Naval Academy, Marine Corps, Columbia MBA, and years in consulting and startups - but the through line is clear. New episode on Middle Tech out now. Rick West reposted thisRick West reposted thisThis week has been especially difficult for my family and I as we attempt to provide support and care for my youngest brother who is battling through a set of diabilitating injuries and disease. These are challenges that every family has to face at different points in our journey through life. I keep my LinkedIn posts to the professional side of things but a simple reply that I made to a colleague in a moment of exhaustion this week unleashed what felt like an flood of messages of support and kindness - triggered by a post of few words. They were energy when I needed it most. There is a lesson here that we can all learn from - just a moment of pause in our busy lives and the chaos that surrounds us can have immense impact. This week has also reinforced important truths that can’t be denied. Our health care system is in crisis - especially in smaller communities where my brother had no choice but to seek the first leg of the critical care he requires. Second, he is a 20+ year veteran with three tours in theater that left him broken and a shell of his former self. Our men and women who serve deserve more and the support system is substandard and failing them. Finally, we’ve witnessed kindness of the most extreme measure from people who are volunteering their time to help fill those gaps. God bless them all. As a leader and supply chain professional for my career, my job was to define the problem, organize and energize the organization to accomplish the impossible, despite the odds - all while bringing calm to the chaos. My hope is that my colleagues can find the strength to do so when they are faced with these same life changing family challenges. Many of you helped me do so this week.

Consumer demand shifts quickly, but the tools brands use to understand that demand often lag behind. Harmonya is changing that. Their platform turns unstructured product data into insights that help CPG companies and retailers anticipate trends, optimize assortments, and move at the pace of today’s consumer. Digital commerce is complex… • 8K followers
I think The Works might have missed an opportunity here. Given that, for almost all product categories, target audiences are increasingly coming from digital generations, closing their digital commerce business is an interesting move. But, it makes sense and I agree with the rationale behind the decision. The reality of both retailing and manufacturing is that we are in business to make money, so, if there is a part of the business that isn’t making money it’s better to make tough decisions, rather than stick with something that isn’t delivering or justifying its place. The Works is an impulse driven retailer, and it is hard to effectively do impulse online. Costs to pick, pack and ship digital commerce orders are high, and, Amazon is a major competitor in every category The Works sells in. Amazon’s economies of scale are significantly better, as is it’s distribution infrastructure. I wonder though if an opportunity is being missed here. The Works has a strong traffic flow online, a geographically wide store portfolio with high footfall, and a diverse customer base to communicate to. Converting to a Marketplace model online, rather than a direct retailer, would allow them to monetise their online traffic, expand their product offering and satisfy wider customer demand, but without having to have the infrastructure and costs of managing a digital commerce retail business. #digitalcommerce #ecommerce #digitalretail #theworks #marketplaces #marketplace #digitalmarketplace https://lnkd.in/eUbVSskD

Bright Future for Bricks & Mortar Stores. Great piece covering Advise by John Walshe @ Retail Media Group, and highlighting: · Vast Majority of Grocery Sales still happen in Brick & Mortar Stores (80% plus) · CPG/ FMCG manufacturers are drowning in data and leaving enormous volumes and value on the shop floor, on the shelf, in the storeroom, with the competition, wasted… take your pick! · When manufacturers don’t engage with data they already have access to, they can’t automate processes, increase margins, increase efficiencies, reduce costs & retail talent. · Almost forgot… Manufacturers have to embrace AI, where it makes sense, like everyone else… 😊 See full article here: https://lnkd.in/erNY7bnH #cpganalytics #drowningindata #ecrireland #catmanglobal

Trulaske's CPG Career Pathway

Trulaske's CPG Career Pathway with Brase RISE Scholars Industry Trend Alert with Jaylen Allen 📣 Have you noticed how many shoppers are choosing store brands over national brands lately? One of the biggest CPG trends from the past few months is the continued rise of private-label and value-focused products as consumers become more price-conscious. With inflation still influencing everyday spending, consumers are prioritizing affordability without fully sacrificing quality. According to recent industry coverage from outlets like FoodNavigator and LinkedIn News, retailers are investing more heavily in their private-label lines, while CPG companies are rethinking pricing strategies, pack sizes, and value messaging. This shift matters because it changes how brands compete not just on price, but on trust, consistency, and perceived value. For the CPG industry, this trend highlights the importance of strong financial planning, supply chain efficiency, and consumer insights. Brands that can control costs while maintaining quality are better positioned to remain competitive. It also shows how critical it is for CPG professionals to understand consumer behavior, especially during economic uncertainty. As a student interested in finance and accounting within CPG, I find this trend especially interesting because it shows how behind-the-scenes decisions directly affect what consumers see on shelves. Understanding cost structures and value positioning will be key skills for future CPG leaders. What do you think will happen to private-label growth even when inflation slows, or will national brands regain dominance? #Trulaske #ExperienceCenteredLearning #CPGCareerPathway #CPG #ConsumerGoods #RetailTrends #PrivateLabel #BusinessStudents

An interesting read for anyone in CPG. Elliott, with a $4B stake in PepsiCo, is calling for a sharper strategy and focus. Focus on core competencies. Elliott argues that PepsiCo’s vertically integrated bottling and sprawling portfolio have added complexity without driving returns Create a nimble company. Complexity and too many SKUs have slowed execution. A leaner structure can help accelerate decision-making and free resources for real innovation. Exit low-margin or dilutive assets. Non-core or underperforming businesses don’t just drag on profits—they dilute management’s attention and capital. Elliott makes the case for divestitures and tighter capital allocation. Reinvest where it matters. By streamlining operations, PepsiCo can put more weight behind its strongest brands, defend its leadership, and make bold bets in adjacencies. Accountability and clear targets. Markets reward clarity. Elliott is pushing for new milestones and transparent communication around growth and profitability. At the heart of it, this is a reminder for every CPG business that execution matters more than ever with focus, agility, and discipline we can move mountains https://buff.ly/Xgp6le4
