Why does everyone think authentication is simple? Just hash a password, check it, done... right? Wrong. Here's what you're actually dealing with: # 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗼𝗯𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀" 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟏. 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 You need to hash passwords. But which algorithm? Bcrypt? Argon2? PBKDF2? Each has trade-offs between security and performance. And what about the salt? You need a unique one per user. Store it wrong, and you've just made a hacker's job easier. Oh, and users will reset their passwords. So you need secure tokens with expiration. And you need to invalidate old ones. And track failed attempts to prevent brute force. 𝟐. 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 JWT? Sessions? Both? Where do you store them? Cookies? LocalStorage? Each choice opens different attack vectors. CSRF protection. XSS prevention. Token refresh logic. Logout on all devices. Session hijacking prevention. And if you're doing mobile apps, you need refresh tokens that don't expire too fast but aren't valid forever either. 𝟑. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 User changes email mid-session. User logs in from two devices. User's account gets compromised. User forgets password but has no recovery email. Rate limiting on login attempts. But not too aggressive or you'll lock out legitimate users. Account enumeration prevention - don't tell attackers which emails exist in your system. # 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗻𝗼𝘁-𝘀𝗼-𝗼𝗯𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀" 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟏. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 GDPR requires you to handle user data properly. That includes authentication logs, password reset requests, and session data. 𝟐. 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 Your authentication service becomes a single point of failure. It needs to handle peak loads, stay fast, and never go down. 𝟑. 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 🔐 Because passwords alone aren't enough anymore. TOTP? SMS codes? Backup codes? Biometrics? Each adds complexity. And users will lose their 2FA device. I've built authentication systems multiple times. Each time I think "this one will be straightforward", and each time I discover new edge cases I hadn't considered 🤔 Sometimes the best solution is to not build it yourself 💡 (But if you do, please don't store passwords in plain text. I'm begging you.)

Crypto’s real risk isn’t hacks. It’s paperwork you didn’t file. Quick catch-up: a Canadian watchdog fined a crypto platform for failing to report suspicious and large transactions. It’s a record $126M penalty, a clear sign enforcement pressure is rising. Investigators tied the unreported flow to child sexual abuse material, fraud, ransomware, and sanctions evasion. That’s beyond sloppy. That’s dangerous. This isn’t about banning crypto. It’s about basic hygiene: when you see smoke, you log it and escalate. If you run payments, the message is simple: missing reports now look like intent, not error. Banks, vendors, and auditors will treat lag as risk you chose. Here’s the non-consensus part: reporting speed will beat on-chain security as the main trust signal in crypto. File fast, or partners will price you out. What changes next: vendors re-run due diligence, banks ask harder questions, and counterparties shorten patience. Controls that felt “fine” last week now look thin. Use this test today before you ship a flow: Could we file the right report in 24 hours, with 1 owner, in 3 clicks? If not, the flow isn’t ready. If you lead product, connect wallet, fiat, and support systems into one alert path. Remove friction for the people who must file. If you lead risk, tag red-flag merchants and sanction leaks, and rehearse your playbook until it’s muscle memory. Precision beats volume. If you lead ops, pre-fill forms, set clear handoffs, and log decisions with timestamps. Make the right action the easy action. Good actors should want this. Fast reporting pushes bad actors out and protects honest volume. if i’m wrong, it’s because this was a one-off show of force and regulators pivot back to quiet warnings. I want crypto to grow up. Filing on time is the floor, not the ceiling. Treat reporting like a product and you’ll earn trust you can measure.
