Mike Hamill reposted thisMike Hamill reposted thisStandards vs guidance. The reality: Most industries don’t suffer from a lack of standards. They suffer from a gap between standards and outcomes. Freight is no different, and we are changing that at Highway . Trade associations and security organizations have done important work defining best practices and raising awareness around risk. That work matters. It created shared language and moved the industry forward. But there’s an uncomfortable reality we should be honest about. A standard that cannot be executed at the moment of transaction is not really a standard. It’s guidance. That doesn’t make it wrong. It just means the market hasn’t yet built the infrastructure required to enforce it consistently. You can see this in the results. More data. More visibility. More certifications. Yet outcomes still vary widely between participants who all claim to follow the same standards. Why? Because visibility and enforcement are different things. Visibility shows you risk after it exists. Standards only change outcomes when they prevent non-conforming transactions from happening in the first place. Every mature industry eventually makes this transition. Payments. Financial markets. Aviation. Healthcare. Standards move from documents into the transaction itself. The market stops interpreting the standard. The transaction executes it. Freight is starting to move in that direction now. Not because prior efforts failed, but because the scale and speed of modern transactions require standards that are executable, not just documented. Trade organizations define what good looks like. Infrastructure determines whether it actually happens. That shift is where the next phase of trust in freight will come from. That is Highway

But before I give it to you, take it to the used car lot downtown and tell them I want to sell it and see how much they offer you for it.” The daughter went to the used car lot, returned to her father and said, “They offered me $1,000 because the said it looks pretty worn out.” The father said, now “Take it to the pawn shop.” The daughter went to the pawn shop, returned to her father and said,”The pawn shop offered only $100 because it is an old car.” The father asked his daughter to go to a car club now and show them the car. The daughter then took the car to the club, returned and told her father,” Some people in the club offered $100,000 for it because it’s a Nissan Skyline R34, it's an iconic car and sought by many collectors” Now the father said this to his daughter, “The right place values you the right way,” If you are not valued, do not be angry, it means you are in the wrong place. Those who know your value are those who appreciate you......Never stay in a place where no one sees your value.

Together, Highway and 3PL Systems, Inc help brokers automate carrier verification and onboarding directly within the TMS, reducing manual work without disrupting existing workflows. For North American Distribution Logistics Inc., that meant less time spent on manual checks and more time focused on booking freight. Over the past 22 years, I have been grateful for the opportunity to lead Covenant's pricing and yield management functions, mentor many talented analysts, and contribute to a team that helped grow the company to more than $1 billion in annual revenue while achieving consistent industry-leading profitability. I am deeply grateful to David Parker, Covenant’s founder and CEO, and to the many talented, forward-thinking colleagues at Covenant, as well as those I had the privilege of working with at US Xpress, JB Hunt, and North American Van Lines. Throughout my career, I have been blessed to work with exceptional people who challenged me, mentored me, and helped shape both my professional career and my personal growth. As I look ahead, I’m excited to spend more time traveling with my wife, Doris; volunteering at First Centenary United Methodist Church in Chattanooga; staying active through exercise; reading; and pursuing part-time consulting opportunities. While I will certainly miss the daily interaction, collaboration, and camaraderie with so many outstanding coworkers, customers, vendors, and industry colleagues, I leave with a heart full of gratitude for the friendships, experiences, and opportunities that have enriched my career. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this remarkable journey. I wish you all continued success, and I hope our paths cross again.

The latest U.S. Freight Index is sounding the alarm, pointing to a convergence of inland bottlenecks and a record surge in fraud as the industry heads into peak season. This "State of the Industry" report highlights a challenging and complex environment for shippers and carriers, with multiple pressure points straining the system. Key takeaways from the latest index: 🔹 Inland Bottlenecks Persist: Despite some improvements at the ports, inland rail and truck networks are still facing significant congestion, creating delays and uncertainty. 🔹 Record Levels of Fraud: The industry is grappling with an unprecedented wave of fraud, including double brokering and cargo theft, adding another layer of risk and cost. 🔹 A Shifting Market: The freight market is in a state of flux, with a disconnect between contract and spot rates, and a "choppy" demand environment. 🔹 Peak Season Pressures: These challenges are all intensifying as the industry heads into the peak shipping season, creating a high-stakes environment for all supply chain players. This is a critical time for the U.S. freight industry, with resilience and vigilance being more important than ever. LTL saves money only when it is used intentionally. For shippers moving smaller or frequent volumes, LTL can reduce linehaul costs. The real difference shows up in how those shipments are planned across lanes, schedules, and handling requirements. Cost efficiency depends on questions many shippers overlook: - Are LTL shipments moving consistently on the same lanes or treated as one-offs - Is pallet density optimized to avoid unfavorable reclassification - Are accessorials quietly eroding the rate advantage - Does transit variability introduce downstream costs elsewhere in the operation When those variables are aligned, LTL can outperform full truckload from a cost and planning standpoint. When they are not, the savings disappear quickly. At Proof Logistics, we help shippers evaluate LTL as part of a broader freight strategy. Alert as to imported container and possible railroad intermodal freight into the USA market… JOC report overnight passed along. Cheers! Jim Monthly US containerized imports will slide below 2 million TEUs and be at a year-over-year deficit at least through February due to an early peak season driven by tariff frontloading and as importers contend with new tariffs yet to come, a major retail group said Wednesday. The average monthly year-over-year decline in imports from October through February is significant — almost 16%, the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates revealed in their latest Global Port Tracker (GPT). “This year’s peak season has come and gone, largely due to retailers frontloading imports ahead of reciprocal tariffs taking effect,”

📦 Leaner Inventories Weaken Ocean Demand, a Harbinger for Higher Tender Rejections, Increased Truck Rates Inventory strategies are reshaping freight markets as Stuart Chirls reports in FreightWaves that aggressive stock drawdowns are cooling ocean demand while increasing pressure on truckload capacity, rates, and tender acceptance—an insightful look at how speed is overtaking scale in supply chains. 💡 Did You Know? Analysts now see North American intermodal volumes peaking in December instead of early fall, a lasting shift tied to e-commerce growth and late-season consumer purchasing patterns. 📩 As shippers balance lean inventories with tighter delivery windows, John S. James Co. supports customers through international freight forwarding, carrier performance monitoring, inland transportation coordination, and customs brokerage that keeps goods moving seamlessly from port to final destination. Truckload dominating headlines, but the real story is where rail and key commodities converge. According to the 2026 FreightFA 3PL guide: J.B. Hunt aims for 150,000 intermodal containers with BNSF, offering Quantum service that achieves 95% on-time performance at intermodal costs. Cold chain and healthcare logistics are experiencing high single-digit growth, even as other sectors slow. Lineage and Americold are creating barriers in temperature-controlled infrastructure that most generalist 3PLs can't match. For network strategy leaders, the focus shifts from: “Which 3PL is cheapest?” to “Which 3PL can adapt across truck, rail, and cold chain when market cycles change?" The guide highlights: - Who is genuinely multimodal (rail partnerships and intermodal capacity) - Who is commodity-diversified versus specialized - Which sectors remain recession-proof in 2026 (healthcare, cold chain, staples, agriculture) If your 2026 planning and RFPs don’t consider these factors, you’re optimizing for today’s spot market, not tomorrow’s risks. 👉 Access the full 2026 3PL guide (for FreightFA paid subscribers): https://lnkd.in/grqiyfat

In LTL, the base rate is rarely the full story. Tariff 100 defines how minimums, accessorials, reclassifications, and liability limits are actually applied. Miss one provision and a correct quote can turn into a rebill. This week, Patrick breaks down how to use Tariff 100 as an operational reference when quoting, not as a legal document. If you’re quoting LTL regularly, this is required reading. #LTL #FreightBrokerage #Transportation Read Now: https://lnkd.in/eGt4n3KB

Compliance is Your Competitive Edge: Master 2026's New CDL Rules & Weight Restrictions. In 2026, the most successful haulers won't just be the ones with the most trucks; they'll be the ones who master the regulatory landscape. New FMCSA rules for nondomiciled CDLs and the annual rollout of spring weight restrictions are creating complex challenges. Getting this wrong means fines, delays, and damaged client relationships. Proactive compliance isn't a cost center; it's a critical part of your service offering. Actionable Insight for Haulers: Conduct a full audit of your driver certifications and operational plans now. Use route optimization software to navigate weight restrictions efficiently. Communicate proactively with your clients about how you're managing these regulations to ensure their projects stay on schedule. This builds trust and sets you apart from less prepared competitors.
