Wondering what I've been up to lately? Well, it's not a secret anymore. For the last several months I've been working on an entirely new agentic AI document editing experience for Word. A couple weeks ago we introduced this as Agent Mode and began rolling it out to our Frontier preview program. This has been an incredibly fun project to work on, and ever since our first fully functioning prototype I have been dying to share it with the world. M365 Personal, Family, and Premium customers can try it out today by enabling Frontier features in the Word web app. And very soon we'll be rolling this out to the Office Insider audience so you can try it out right in the desktop version of Word! In the meantime, you can also check out this (real-time, unedited) video I recorded a couple of weeks ago showing how Agent Mode can help you create API specs and documentation. I know I'm biased, but this has quickly become one of my very favorite AI tools, right alongside Github Copilot (and its own Agent Mode). This preview is just the beginning. Our team is already hard at work polishing up some rough edges, incorporating user feedback, and adding even more capabilities to the agent. I can't wait to show you what we have in store for the months ahead!

Something I said in a thread elsewhere, which bears repeating here: I think the reason the C programming language excited people back around 1980-85 is that, for the first time, we had a programming language that really did replace assembler -- it gave you an efficient way to do basically anything the computer could do. Previous programming languages, especially FORTRAN and BASIC, didn't give you the full capabilities of the computer directly. They were designed to put a layer of separation between the programmer and the CPU, the way R, for instance, does today. FORTRAN in particular had a strong emphasis on portability. BASIC had a strong emphasis on the things a beginner would want to do. C made it easy to program down to the bare metal, so to speak.

When abstractions stabilize, code becomes habitable—and “LLM-friendly.” If your code uses small, intention-revealing helpers (e.g., write(), read(), partition(), delayWritesFrom(), and a HistoryRecorder that emits Jepsen EDN), you can prompt an LLM with paragraph from the book and get runnable tests for concrete scenarios. People reading patterns from my book or the DDIA book can try this with Tickloom.
