Jim McCarthy shared thisWonderful post about my friend, Ronan McGovern, and his courage to highlight #neurodiversityatwork. I've had the pleasure of closely following his journey these past few years, and I'm delighted that he's helping us better understand one more way that #diversityandinclusion can help us all. Rock on, Ronan!Jim McCarthy shared thisDublin in the 1960s and 1970s was a difficult time for Ronan McGovern to grow up. He found himself getting into plenty of trouble at school and at home, he told me. “I was also described as inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive.” It wasn’t until 1996, when he was well into his 30s and attending #Stanford Business School, that the reason for his behaviour became clear. A classmate, who also happened to be a medical expert, identified Ronan as having Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or #ADHD, which was later confirmed by an educational #psychologist. “It was an inflection point in my life.” During 2019, he spent six months with medical professionals and researchers as part of the Stanford Neurodiversity Project. Now, Ronan integrates his professional experience as a banker, barrister and chartered accountant to help raise awareness about #neurodiversity in corporations and elsewhere. “My life purpose is to promote awareness of ADHD and neurodiversity,” he said. The term itself encompasses a range of conditions including ADHD, #Dyslexia, #Dyspraxia, #Dyscalculia and #Autism. While many managers actively embrace the benefits that arise from promoting #diversity in gender, ethnicity, religion and culture, the advantages an organisation receives when supporting neurodiversity are equally important but perhaps less understood. In 2020, Ronan founded a “Rebuild Innovation” research project through Stanford in the area of neurodiversity. Along with two core team members, Tiffany Jameson of grit & flow, a California-based organisation that focuses on helping people understand how they work best, and Susan O’ Malley, a fellow Stanford alum who works at the global design company IDEO. Together, along with 80 volunteers, they published their findings on the website, NDGiFTS Movement. Globally, people with #neurodiverse conditions are underemployed or unemployed and yet research also shows these people are extremely creative. “That’s why we make the business case around much needed innovation. In our project, we engaged with Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Google, Microsoft, Salesforce and LinkedIn in the US. We said there’s an invisible, unaddressed market with loads of untapped talent. They see things differently. If you want innovation, intentionally recruit neurodiverse people,” Ronan explained. “We are delighted to share that Goldman Sachs has been successfully doing this over the past year. Goldman, Microsoft and Bank of America are exemplary companies in the US and I am delighted that AIB Bank (where Ronan works) now has neurodiversity on its diversity radar as well,” he added. Hey Gerardo! I'm so happy to see how you've chosen to manage not only your career, but your life. Yes, there are people like (my fellow Omahan) Warren Buffett, who can't imagine anything more fun than continuing in their business roles. But there are plenty of others (like you and me) who've chosen to start new chapters in their lives, which are quite different from what came before. (Of course, we still get to leverage all of our prior experiences.)
Life is short -- sometimes a lot shorter than we think it will be. So it's a beautiful opportunity if we can have that mix of Pleasure and Purpose, which for me makes up the Happiness 2 x 2 Matrix. (I wrote about this in my book. ; - )
Rock on, my friend!

Hey Ray Bamford! Your article is not only insightful and practical...it's FUN to read! I love your quotes from many of the business world's great leaders and thinkers. More importantly, your examples help me clearly understand your points. (Useful to note that both of Amazon's loops end up on the Customer Experience.) I really like the "Tackle the monkey first" approach from Google's X group. It's also great to see you quoting one of my heroes -- Andy Grove. You are indeed fortunate that you got to work directly with him. I'm sure you carry a lot of his wisdom with you, as you help your clients develop their strategies.
All the best!

His mom worked as a beautician, his dad at a grain elevator—they were probably really proud when he graduated valedictorian of his 50-person high school class. He played basketball and the trombone, got elected homecoming king, and worked in soybean fields and meat processing plants during summers. While studying at the University of Iowa, he met the woman who would become his wife, with whom he would have two kids. By all accounts, he was smart, hard-working, funny, and a thoroughly decent man. This guy—not the person who murdered him in cold blood—was everything that’s right and good about America, and the American Dream. May his memory be a blessing, and may his example inspire all of us to do better.

One of those was Google. $7mm to build a mind blowing idea–a cross device ad platform. That was December 2010. I joined in March 2011. When I got there - There were no customers - There was no platform - There was no data to test anything on - There was only a mathematical proof that it could be built... - ... and 4 amazing engineers (Kamakshi Sivaramakrishnan, Devin Guan, J. Ravi Menon, and Yang Yu) 13 months later we were at a $10mm run rate, close to 30 great people and dozens of customers (I honestly don't remember how many...) doing a $100mm valuation Series B (when that was a huge valuation... how times have changed). What did we do right? 1. Kamakshi raised the right amount of money from smart investors, Matt Murphy and jim goetz 2. She hired a great team. The founding engineers for sure. Maybe also me (#5). + Mani Davari, Bhumika Dadbhawala, Jim McCarthy, Sanjay Agarwal, and many others–later Paul Cushman, Youngin Shin, Jerry Ye, Len Frenkel, Aravinth Bheemaraj, Eric Rosenblum, Dini M.. (and so many more! add in comments!). 3. She leveraged experts. Moiz Syed used to take a cab (!!) over after his day job to literally moonlight designing our UI. 4. She listened and got branding right. The original name wasn't serving us... after an IDEO-led branding session we went with Drawbridge. It worked. 5. We set a strategy that was successful. Maybe I'll take some credit for this... 6. We got our first 10 customers and were off to the races. How did we get our strategy right? How did we get those customers? Those answers are too long for LinkedIn post–BUT they're about the right length for a 30 min crash course. If you're a founder and want to know how we did what we did–with confidence join me on Tuesday to to learn how. It's free. You'll learn something–or get your money back. Did I mention, it's free? https://lnkd.in/gm9HCAJG

Blackbird's success is Team Australia's success, and it wasn't us founders it was the Awesome Aussie entrepreneurs that overcame all odds to be Global best of breed - well done Big T for kicking it all off.
