As they say, feedback is golden, whether positive or negative, as long as it is well-intentioned and, of course, constructive. Yesterday, I had the privilege of having such an opportunity from my fellow PMI Houston Chapter Board of Directors, led by the super engaging Gabriela Gutierrez, MBA, PMP®. I expected to learn something about how others see my leadership, particularly in the context of a volunteer-led, non-profit organization. What stood out was how consistently three themes came through: Trust. Inspiration. Results. The words used included authentic, supportive, collaborative, approachable, servant leader and steady. Others described me as innovative, forward-looking, high energy, and someone who can inspire and rally people around a vision. And, perhaps most importantly, results oriented. That combination gave me something to reflect on: executive leadership is not only about having the vision or driving the result. It is really about creating the trust and bringing energy that allows people to move towards that vision together. This behavior needs to be consistent and intentional so that true connections can be made. If you follow me, you know that I have always believed that leadership is about people first and foremost. Projects, strategies, transformations and organizations ultimately move forward because people CHOOSE to engage, collaborate and take ownership. That is why my personal leadership philosophy continues to be: Lead. Innovate. Transform. Sustain. I am grateful to the PMI Houston Board for the candid feedback, the frank and targeted discussions we had and, more importantly, for the opportunity to keep learning. Leadership is never a finished product. The goal is to remain authentic, stay curious, create value for others and leave every organization, team or person better than when you found them. At the end of the session, we were asked to describe it in one word, and my word was RE-ASSURED - I already know what a great team we have and this event reinforced that stronger bond and connection as I look forward to becoming the Chapter President in 2027. This session will stay in the back of my mind as a key moment and pillar to help shape what next year will look like. Gabriela Gutierrez, MBA, PMP® shared thisMeeting someone great is “luck.” Still having them in your life a year later usually isn’t. Iwona Wilson and I met at a conference last year, where we were both speakers. We clicked! And we spent quite a bit of time together during the 2 days of the conference. But you and I know that, for the most part, the nature of conferences is that you meet wonderful people… Then you stay connected on LinkedIn. And most of them, you never get to see in person again. (Let me be the first to admit that I’m guilty as charged!) But thankfully, that wasn’t the case this time. Iwona and I didn’t leave seeing each other again to luck. We intentionally made the time to meet again. And again. And again. We’ve made sure we spend quality time together and uplift each other, supporting one another’s growth in our businesses…and in life itself! We’ve met in person about 6 times in the past year. Even our kids have already met twice! In fact, this picture is from us having brunch in Houston this week. We had so much fun. Can you tell from the picture?! When life gives you the gift of crossing paths with wonderful people you genuinely click with, make the most of that gift. Invest in the relationship. Make the time. So far, half of my life, I’ve lived in the beautiful country where I was born: Honduras, the heart of Central America. A small country home to priceless treasures from the magnificent Mayan civilization, and stunning beaches on both its Caribbean and Pacific coasts. (Google “Roatan” if you’re curious.) The other half of my life I’ve lived in Spain, Canada, and now the United States. I left Honduras. But Honduras never left me. Its warmth that turns strangers into family, its generosity in sharing even when there’s little, and its joy found in the simplest things live in me. And maybe you’ve felt the same. You might have left a country, a city, a job, a career path, a chapter of your life… But not everything you leave is left behind. The places you’ve called home. The experiences that shaped you. The paths you’ve walked. They become part of you. You carry their lessons, their memories, and pieces of who you became along the way. That’s the richness of your journey. Every chapter you’ve lived adds something to who you are. And no one else carries quite the same combination as you. You are richer because of the places you’ve been, the paths you’ve walked, and all YOU carry within. 💭 Do you agree? __ P.S. Today, September 15th, is Honduras’s Independence Day! Gabriela Gutierrez, MBA, PMP® reposted this8 years ago, I drove 44+ hours with a whole mix of emotions. I drove on my own. In the tiny 2-door blue car I had back then. The car, filled with all my belongings. The rest I had sold or given away. Me, filled with more emotions than I could describe. Nostalgia, fear, sadness, excitement, joy. Why? Because I was leaving the city I called home back then, the beautiful city of Calgary, Canada. Why? Because a dream had been planted in me. To leave Calgary and head to Toronto. In pursuit of better job opportunities. Opportunities aligned not only with what I wanted in the short term, but most importantly, with my long-term goals. I left my home. My friends. My stable job. And the feeling of leaving everything behind was hard. Extremely hard. Can you relate to how hard it is to leave your comfort zone? And on top of that, I left with nothing, absolutely NOTHING lined up in Toronto. No job. No guarantees that my plan would work out. I did the 44+ hour drive in 4 days, so I could get enough rest between the long drives. During those 4 days, I experienced a whole mix of emotions. Which resulted in me doing all this in my tiny 2-door blue car while driving: Crying, praying, laughing, singing out loud. Feeling nostalgia for what I was leaving behind and excitement for what could be ahead of me. But I also had immeasurable faith and determination to make things work out. September 2018 was when I arrived in Toronto. 8 years later, I remember those feelings so vividly, like it was yesterday. Did things work out? Oh yes! Toronto gave me an amazing job at the company of my dreams. I stayed there for 5+ years. And that experience shaped me professionally and helped me become the business owner I am today. As I reflect on that decision today, I’m happy to report that the hard and BOLD decision I made back then was worth it. So, so worth it! That courage I had back then (and still have today) has helped me become who I am today and build the professional life I once dreamed of. Was it comfortable? Absolutely not. Was I certain it would work out? Absolutely not. But if you’re someone like me, you have goals. Big ones. You must know that there will (for sure!) be times when you must leave what is comfortable to go after your goals and the life you know you want. And for those times, this is my message to you… Leaving what’s comfortable takes courage. Gabriela Gutierrez, MBA, PMP® shared thisNearly 40% of our awake time is spent working. That’s too much of our life for work to only be about earning money to make a living. (Stat source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2024) Today, we celebrate Labor Day in the United States, Canada, and other countries. And in anticipation of today, this past week I’ve been reflecting on my own journey with work. 2 decades ago, when I graduated from college, my goal (and my definition of success) was simple: Get a job that paid my bills, allowed me to save some money, and made me feel financially independent from my parents. As my career (and life) evolved, so did what I wanted from it. Today, I’m grateful that my work gives me the means to make a living and provide for myself and my family. But I’m even more grateful for the intangible part of it: My work makes me → feel alive. That’s part of my NEW definition of success. Wherever you are in your career today, whether you’re employed or have your own business, I hope your work gives you more than the means to pay the bills. I hope it makes you feel alive and successful based on your own definition of success. And if it doesn’t yet, I hope you’re building your way toward work that does that for you. Here are 4 things that have helped me in my journey: 1. Being super intentional about seeking mentorship and learning from people whose career paths inspire me and whose passion for their work is contagious. 2. Having a ton of curiosity and an insatiable thirst for ideas and tactical strategies beyond my own circle, through books & podcasts that allow me to learn from people whose career and business paths inspire me. 3. Building my professional life around my “Zone of Genius”, not just my “Zone of Competence”. This has transformed me and my business over the past 2 years!!! (I highly recommend you the book “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks.) 4. Making career and life decisions that are connected to my WHY and the purpose I want my work to serve. (Another book I recommend “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek.) Build a career that’s more than a way to make a living. Not just for the impressive work they do, but mostly for WHO they are, HOW they do what they do, and HOW it feels to be around them? These ladies you see here with me are leaders in the global Project Management world. (Project Management Institute) Besides being admirable leaders, they’re fun, kind, and generous human beings. They were organizers and hosts of the PMI LATAM Conference 2026, where I traveled to speak this past August. And I can’t tell you enough what a joy it was to work with them in the months and weeks leading up to the conference, and to experience their magic in action during the conference itself. Natália T.lf. Natália T., Polliane Souza, PMP® and Milena Milanova made their magic happen in the planning and execution of the event. On top of everything else they did, they made it super easy for me (and my fellow speakers) to focus on our magic: Speaking on stage! María Carolina Latorre made her magic happen in many parts of the conference, including delivering the opening session alongside another PMI leader, Johannes Heinlein. And part of Carolina’s magic was bringing the energy to inaugurate the event and build TREMENDOUS excitement among the large audience that had traveled from across Latin America and other parts of the world to learn and connect at this annual conference. What a joy to see these leaders in action. What a joy to witness the impact they create. What a joy to experience their contagious energy. What a joy to know them and feel inspired by them. Your impact goes beyond what you do. It’s also in how you do it and how you make people feel. Vendors want decisions. Leaders want certainty. And somehow, the project manager is expected to provide all four. Even when the experts disagree. Even when the information is incomplete. Even when the decision belongs to someone else. That is where many organizations misunderstand the role. A project manager is not there to know everything. They are there to connect what the project needs: The right people. The missing information. The unresolved decisions. The job is to ask: → What is still unclear? → Who owns this decision? → What happens if we do nothing? → Which assumption needs testing? → What information are we missing? Those questions are not evidence of inexperience. They reveal what the project still needs. The strongest project managers do not pretend to have every answer. They find where the answer lives. They turn scattered expertise into shared direction. And they help the team act before uncertainty becomes delay. Project management is not about knowing everything. It is about knowing what the project needs next. What do great project managers do that others rarely notice?

I got to explore Las Vegas, see Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire, catch up with Parmjit Kaur, PMP®, CSM® and Manuel Martinez, take in the Bellagio display before it changed, and hear Billy Idol live. Then one of my dear friends from my disaster recovery days, Shirley Bingham and I set forth on adventure and visited Key West and the Bahamas! Also amazing to see Andrea Pratt-Smith, MBA, PMP® on my day in Nassau! I spoke for PMI Arizona, PMI South Alabama, and PMI Dallas Chapter and caught up with some of my chapter and speaker friends along the way. Those conversations and connections are one of the best parts of getting to do this. And yes, I worked too! 😄 I revamped 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐫: 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 and submitted it for three opportunities in 2027. I reimagined 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐖𝐀𝐌𝐏: 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐮𝐫𝐤𝐲 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 and will deliver for the first time next week at AITP-Chicago. I was also stoked to have the mental capacity to create a couple of new decks: 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐅𝐥𝐞𝐱: 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐌𝐎𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞, 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, which I’ll deliver at The PMO Leader 6th Annual Virtual Conference next week. Then created 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐬: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐌𝐞 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐀𝐠𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 which will be presented for the first time at the PMI Asia Pacific Agile Regional Hub symposium. There are a lot of good ideas finding their way onto slides and it served as a good way to remind myself to keep making space for the people, conversations, and experiences that help them flow. I’m heading into Q4 with lots already planned, ideas waiting for lift-off, and plenty of room for the unexpected. I’m traveling today, and when I wake up, I’ll be in Washington, DC, ready for the next adventure at the Project Management Institute, Washington DC Chapter, Inc professional development day. And yes, this cup of Joe at the airport is becoming a whole theme. Apparently, I have a travel uniform now: boarding pass, coffee, and a very full calendar. So this is not “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” More like: September, thanks for the memories and let’s keep this good energy going! October, I’m ready for fall colors, cooler weather, more swamp adventures, boots, costumes, and possibly a Halloween soundtrack that will have my friends jamming out! 🍂🎃🎶 Grow Forth and Prosper!
