Eric Burger shared thisI am excited to participate on a panel at the Federal Communications Commission on Best Practices for Cyberattack Risk Management and Response, sponsored by the #PSHSB. This event is for all carriers, more especially smaller carriers who might not have 100+ person security operations centers. I.e., "the rest of us." Even if I was not on a panel, I would go to hear Charles Clancy's overview of the threat environment. My panel, moderated by Leon Kenworthy, includes Jeff Cichonski from National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), John Marinho from CTIA, and Scott Poretsky from Ericsson. It should be a great opportunity to learn about the threats, opportunities for carriers to protect themselves and each other, and how to respond to incidents. Eric Burger posted thisAt the Open Commission Meeting, Federal Communications Commission adopted a Report and Order on equipment approvals. This was an important step in protecting America's, and the world's, networks from untrustworthy equipment approved by foreign labs of questionable repute and in countries that do not respect our laboratories in a reciprocal fashion. It is much better to catch a threat *before* it hits consumers and enterprises. I am proud of my PhD student, Erika Heeren-Moon, MA, who assisted with the drafting of the order. She got to *speak* at the Open Commission Meeting - a rarity for anyone, no less an intern! I appreciated Chairman Brendan Carr calling her out in his remarks. This is also a proud moment for the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI)'s internship program. Erika was supported at the FCC by the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative Southwest Virginia node. This is a program that enables companies and agencies to have access to students across Virginia, not just from Virginia Tech, while those students gain valuable cyber employment experience that will help them land permanent positions. Eric Burger shared thisIt is heartening to find out that work we have done delivers results beyond expectations. It is more so when those expectations are about lives saved. When the Federal Communications Commission first took on the creation of a suicide prevention hotline, there were a lot of headwinds. Like telling a Senator, No - we cannot use the number they wanted, because that would delay adoption, literally cost ten times more at the call answering centers, and result in thousands of avoidable deaths. Like telling industry, Yes - it has a cost to upgrade or reconfigure the network, but the benefits (we hoped) would far outweigh the costs. Like telling a handful of state regulators, Yes - we realize you use 988 for an exchange in your area code, so you will have to join the rest of the nation and use 10-digit dialing. Today, the The New York Times published an article reporting on a study conducted at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and National Bureau of Economic Research that shows that since the implementation of 988, teen suicide rates have dropped dramatically. When we did the benefit-cost analysis, we said that if we could save only 1,200 people per year, the costs would be well justified. In the paper, looking at the 15-34 year old age group, almost 1,750 people per year were saved. Rarely do we look back to see if our estimates were correct. In this case, we were more than correct. It's not just numbers - it is about quality of life, families not devastated, productive economic contributions that all will happen because of 988. Most of the kudos for the program rightly belongs to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), who lead the program. However, it is easy to forget that without the FCC's creation of 988, well, there would be no 988. I want to thank Ajit Pai and Wayne Leighton for the opportunity to have me serve at the FCC - I came to combat illegal #robocalling, and left with that and 988. The folks in the Office of Economics and Analytics, especially Chuck Needy, who came up with the novel way of modeling the benefits of 988. The industry and local regulators in the North American Numbering Council who circled in on the 988 number itself. The Wireline Competition Bureau who did the heavy lifting on the series of orders (still ongoing!). And many others who made this happen. For the academics out there: do consider an IPA! You never know how many lives you may save with your work, more especially when a surprise project comes your way. For everyone out there: the paper noted that while youth suicides dropped dramatically, suicide by older adults have only dipped slightly. Eric Burger shared thisA local (to Virginia Tech in Southwest Virginia) Fox News TV affiliate, WFXR, ran an interview with me on #illegal #robocalls. I addressed the dangers of #Generative #AI, some of the work we have been doing at Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI), as well as some tips for consumers. I also pointed out the work of the Stop Scams Alliance. One of the top approaches that has shown to work in the UK, Australia, and other countries is to block or at least flag foreign-originated calls claiming to have U.S. numbers that do not have the obvious right to use the number (e.g., you are roaming or have an established enterprise call center). In value-based care, those moments all start with a call the patient actually answers — and most practices don’t have the staff time to make that happen. We’re glad to welcome Jacqueline Cardillo to Consig’s advisory board. Jacqueline has spent 20+ years living that problem from the inside: senior leadership roles at a major health insurer and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, running the largest multi-specialty physician group in New York City, and most recently as Chief of Staff at Millennium Physician Group — one of the largest independent primary care groups in the country, where she helped lead the organization through a high-growth acquisition and PE transition. “Value-based care depends on reaching patients between visits,” said Cardillo. “I’ve run these programs inside large physician groups, and the constraint is always staff time. Eric Burger reacted on thisNew chapter: I'm taking on a new role as VP, Global Strategic Alliances, within Cisco's Corporate Strategy Office. I'll be leading how Cisco aligns and orchestrates its most important partnerships, across silicon, hyperscale cloud, and the broader technology ecosystem, spanning every Cisco Product BU rather than a single business unit, as AI reshapes what customers need from all of us. Having built and led a company as a founder, and worked in partnerships across both smaller ventures and large corporate environments, has prepared me well for this next phase. In the AI era, no single company can win alone, the partnerships between infrastructure, silicon, and cloud providers are becoming as important as any single product roadmap, and I'm looking forward to helping Cisco lead there. This role is fundamentally one of orchestration, bringing together the strong players we already have across Cisco, each owning a critical piece of the puzzle, our Product BUs, our Partner orgs, and our Sales teams, all working toward a common goal. It's a great team with a clear mandate: to help Cisco move even faster with the partners who matter most, speaking with one voice and one strategy. It examines various recent cyber incidents in crypto-asset services and gives some considerations on measuers to mitigate risks. Eric Burger reacted on thisEric Burger reacted on thisI'm thrilled to share that I've joined Harvard Division of Continuing Education in a newly-created role that feels like a rare chance to do some lasting good. At a moment when the cost of higher education is soaring, when funding is evaporating, and when so many of the public and private institutions that built our society seem to be fraying, I can think of no better answer than this: take one of the most elite and prestigious universities in the world, and unbar the gates. That is what this division has been doing for more than a century, and the constituents we serve - the working parent taking one course a semester, for the public servant stationed overseas, the career changer - each of them is a lifelong learner whose intellectual journey refuses to follow a straight, traditional line. This work matters to me personally. When I began my pivot from politics into education, more than a decade into my career, I had several individuals in mind; chief among them were friends and coworkers in my hometown of Madison, Indiana, where I spent two summers building motors alongside people whose livelihoods would soon be outsourced to a country with more profitable labor practices. Reflecting on what a college degree had made possible for me as a first-generation graduate, I came to my intention to spend my career opening that door for others. I had only an inkling that the pivot would lead me here, but as I've since learned, education is inherently political - and this is precisely the kind of work I once set out to do. I keep thinking about my parents, who, like millions of humans in every generation, never had the chance to complete a college degree. This wasn't due to a lack of curiosity or intelligence on their parts, but because family life demanded other things of them first. They were my original inspiration for working in education, and they remain the measure I use for whether an institution is truly open. There's also a certain poetry at play: before earning my EdM at Harvard Graduate School of Education, I began my graduate studies with an education policy course at Harvard Extension School. Taking this course the way most of our students experience this place - at night, on weekends, and between meetings - gave me me a firsthand appreciation for what these classrooms make possible - and for the dedication that our students bring to the table.
