Dawn Bar liked thisDawn Bar liked this"I have pulled dead, mangled bodies from cars.. I have lied to people as they were dying. I said you are going to be fine as I held their hand and watched the life fade out. I have held dying babies. Bought lunch for people who were mentally ill and haven't eaten in a while. I have had people try to stab me. Fought with men trying to shoot me. Been attacked by women who have had the sh*t kicked out of them by their husband as I was arresting him. I have held towels on bullet wounds. Done CPR when I knew it wouldn't help just to make family members feel better. I have torn down doors, fought in drug houses. Chased fugitives though the woods. I have been in high speed car chases. Foot chases across an interstate during rush hour traffic. I have been in crashes. Been squeezing the trigger about to kill a man when they came to their senses and stopped. Waded through large angry crowds by myself. Drove like a mad man to help a fellow officer. Let little kids who don't have much sit in my patrol car and pretend they are a cop for their birthday. I have taken a lot of people to jail. Given many breaks. Prayed for people I don't even know. Yes and at times I have been "violent" when I had to be. I have been kind when I could.. I admit I have drove to some dark place and cried by myself when I was overwhelmed. I have missed Christmas and other holidays more than I wanted too. Every cop I know has done all these things and more for lousy pay, suckie hours and a short life expectancy. We don't want your pity, I don't care for your respect. Just let us do our jobs without killing us.. please. Thank you." - written by an officer in Pembroke, Georgia . Dawn Bar liked thisDawn Bar liked thisColonel Robert "Bull" Wolverton (29), commander of the 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division getting his gear ready to jump into Saint-Côme-du-Mont, Normandy on June 5th, 1944. On that evening, he gathered his 750 men in an orchard adjacent to what is now Exeter airport, and said: "...if die we must, that we die as men would die, without complaining, without pleading and safe in the feeling that we have done our best for what we believed was right." Sadly, within hours, Wolverton, landed and became entangled in a tree just outside Saint-Côme-du-Mont. Within moments, he was struck by German patrol, killing him before his feet ever landed on French soil. His body was left hanging from the tree for three days and was used as target practice by the Germans. It is written that when Colonel Wolverton's body was recovered by American soldiers, the beloved commander of the 3/506 had over 150 bullet holes and bayonet wounds in his body. His possessions had also been looted from him, including pictures of his wife and toddler son. Wolverton's remains were eventually recovered and sent back to the United States, and he was buried with full honors in the cemetery of his beloved alma mater: the United States Military Academy at West Point. Robert was awarded the Legion of Merit posthumously. Despite his horrific death, Wolverton's legacy endured. His prayer was cited by President Ronald Reagan in a 1984 speech from Normandy on the 40th anniversary of the invasion and recounted in numerous books throughout the years. We will never forget this hero. #WWII #history #militaryhistory #airborne #lestweforget #DDay

Dawn Bar liked thisDawn Bar liked thisIn Remembrance U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Travis J. Manion and U.S. Navy SEAL Lt. Brendan A. Looney were roommates at the U.S. Naval Academy, where they graduated and commissioned in 2004. Both men were subsequently killed in action - Manion on April 29, 2007, in Anbar Province, Iraq, and Looney on September 21, 2010, in Ayatalah Village, Afghanistan. On Memorial Day, we remember the sacrifices made by these two men - who are buried side-by-side in Arlington National Cemetery - and the sacrifices of all those who have given the last full measure of devotion in service to our nation. 📹 by Marine Sgt. Dawn Bar liked thisDawn Bar liked thisRemembrance – Memorial Day Weekend Memorial Day - We honor and mourn those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and died while serving. If you have never been to the Tomb of the Unknown Solider at Arlington National Cemetery; I strongly encourage to go. It will make the hair on your arms stand up and get your attention as an American. You will hear the clicks of the Sentinels shoes in the video. In person, coupled with the commanded silence for respect, those clicks sound like bombs going off. The experience will make you realize battles in history are real and will naturally command your respect for all who have served as well as died in battle. The Sentinels at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider stand guard 24-7-365 regardless of weather. Their preciseness and attention to detail is astounding. Enjoy the long-weekend and never forget. Freedom is not free.

The Oregon Employment Department folded paid leave into its unemployment insurance modernization without missing a beat. “And we still came in within that original budget and that time frame, even though we added an entire new benefit program to it,” said David Gerstenfeld, former OED director. How does Oregon work? Jason Bolt and Darren Marshall took time last night at a Portland Business Journal fireside chat to explain just how it does (and doesn’t) work for their businesses. My key takeaway? Business works in Oregon when businesses have a seat at the table. You can easily extend this to so many other ideas and opportunities in the region. The answer to how something works around here should always include high levels of continuous communication. On its face this feels overly simple. But, just ask yourself how your communication tendencies have been trending lately. Good communication is hard! So what are you doing that’s working well right now?
