Huge thanks to the friends who joined me for screenings along the way. It made the adventure a lot more fun. The journey included: 🍿 plenty of last-minute theater runs 🔎 tracking down where some very obscure nominees were showing 🎬 discovering films I never would have watched otherwise Totally worth it. Three I’m still thinking about: • Sinners • The Alabama Solution • It Was Just an Accident Which nominated films stuck with you this year? 🎥🏆

Cheryl Smith liked thisCheryl Smith liked thisA couple of weeks ago I posted about the tragic loss of my friend and fellow cyclist Jakub Solovksy, who was cycling on Skyline when the driver of a Porsche race car going excessively fast lost control of his car and went into the other lane, striking Jakub head on and killing him. The driver was 28 and Jakub was 34. The whole situation is very tragic and upsetting, but unfortunately, it's not an isolated incident. According to a recent UC Berkeley report, there have been nearly 900 crashes on Skyline, 84 and Highway 9 in the last 5 years. And yet citations are rarely issued and drivers are not charged, even when it resulted in the death of a cyclist, hiker or resident. So a group from my cycling club said enough is enough and started organizing. We spoke at the Woodside Town Council meeting this Tuesday and I wrote press releases to the local newspapers and TV stations. We packed the room, the press showed up and the council was very receptive, vowing to work more closely with Caltrans to make changes and allocate more patrol cars on Skyline, especially on the weekends, when most of the racing occurs. It takes a village to effect change and I'm so thankful that so many people are on board. It's not the end but only the beginning in a long fight for justice for Jakub's family and to make our beautiful country roads safer for everyone. The kind that most definitely could not have been an email, and that is much more than a social gathering. It's been a privilege over the past year to join teams in person at their offsites, providing strategic facilitation for crucial leadership conversations, as part of Next Level Executive Group. Steve Cook and I have been honored to support some outstanding dialogues in some really great places. As many teams are preparing for rituals of gathering this fall, we put together a guide that captures seven steps we've found essential in designing and delivering an offsite that delivers outsized value for the business, the team, and the individuals in attendance. You can 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 (𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲-𝐭𝐨-𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞) 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞; link in comments. Here's what we've found makes a big difference: 1. 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞. Where is it most important for your leadership team to be clear, aligned, and committed? 2. 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧. Gathering input from attendees in advance ensures your agenda targets your highest-leverage opportunities and challenges. 3. 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧—Strategic, Emotional, and Cultural. 4. 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐫. Cultivate vulnerability, and establish guardrails. 5. 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞—𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚 ���𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞. Don't overpack the agenda, and design for pauses and resets. 6. 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲. Don't let facilitation compete with contribution. 7. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞, commit, and end with momentum. Cheryl Smith liked thisCheryl Smith liked thisA year ago, I wrote about coronary artery calcium scans as a general health reminder. This year, it is painfully personal. I lost one of my closest friends to a massive heart attack. He was only 47. He was also the person in our group you might have considered the healthiest. He regularly played hockey, rode his bike, went to Orangetheory, and stayed active with his two children. I cannot say that a coronary artery calcium scan would have saved his life. I am not a doctor, and I do not have all the details of his medical circumstances. I will not make a claim I cannot support. But his death shattered the comforting belief that looking fit, exercising regularly, and doing many of the “right” things make someone invulnerable. My father died almost instantly at 54 from an aortic aneurysm that the CAC could have seen as a ticking time bomb inside his heart--that EKGs and Stress Tests do not detect. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for both women and men in the United States. In 2023, it caused 304,970 deaths among women—approximately one out of every five female deaths. Yet only about 56% of women recognize heart disease as their leading cause of death. A coronary artery calcium, or CAC, scan is a quick, noninvasive CT scan that looks for calcified plaque in the arteries supplying the heart. It is different from a stress test, and it is not necessarily the right test for everyone. Current medical guidance recommends considering CAC testing selectively—particularly when someone has borderline or intermediate cardiovascular risk and the result would help determine the appropriate preventive treatment. When my Stanford doctor prescribed my scan in 2024, I was told it would cost approximately $400 at Stanford or $160 at Sutter Health. I chose Sutter, and the results were sent back to my Stanford doctor. Prices and insurance coverage may have changed, but in my case, the out-of-pocket cost was modest compared with the value of the information. Ask your doctor: Is a CAC scan appropriate for me? Have we properly reviewed my blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, family history, and other risk factors? Should my lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), be tested? Being physically active matters. Eating well matters. Taking care of yourself matters. But fitness is not a force field. NVIDIA isn’t just making GPUs anymore. It’s becoming the substrate everything runs on. Today, San José State University brought the NVIDIA GTC Student Experience right to campus, and I got to watch the keynote live while Jensen walked through what might be the most important infrastructure buildout in human history. He made the point that going forward, companies should think about offering tokens alongside annual compensation packages the same way they offer health benefits today. That hit different when you’re a student trying to figure out what “value” looks like in an AI-first job market. The slides I was photographing are honestly worth studying. One showed the entire structured data ecosystem, every major enterprise, every storage platform, every database engine, all connected by green lines to a single block at the bottom that said cuDF. The next one did the same for unstructured data with cuVS. Hundreds of zettabytes of data a year, and it all flows through the same foundation. That’s not a product pitch. That’s a map of how the world actually works now. And then there was the Olaf moment. Jensen Huang brought an actual Disney Frozen robot on stage to show physical AI and what Newton, their new physics simulation engine built with Disney Research and Google DeepMind, can do. We’re at an inflection point for inference. The question is no longer whether AI will be everywhere. This puts the Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act, a landmark law that sets first-of-its-kind guardrails for frontier AI in the U.S. This "helps advance California’s position as a national leader in responsible and ethical AI, the world’s fourth-largest economy, the birthplace of new technology, and the top pipeline for tech talent." This isn’t just a state policy win, it’s a template for the nation. Here’s why this matters, and why it should excite every product leader, AI engineer, and policymaker: 🫱🏻🫲🏼 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 + 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 ...𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁 SB 53 requires frontier AI developers to publicly publish their governance frameworks, enforce reporting of critical safety incidents, and institute whistleblower protections. It acknowledges a simple truth: you don’t solve AI risk by choking off progress, you do it by embedding trust and accountability into its foundations. 🚀 𝗜𝘁 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 Optional “abstain when uncertain” zones are no longer just good ideals, they’re becoming legal expectations.
