The Fed’s rate hike got plenty of attention last week, but advisors were already looking past the headlines. At the Good Life Advisor Conference in Amelia Island, the conversation centered on where investors are being compensated for risk and how an unconstrained fixed income approach can help uncover opportunities as markets continue to shift. Thank you to everyone who joined Voya’s Brett Cornwell, CFA, for a thoughtful discussion and for sharing what’s top of mind for clients today. Drew Haley, CFA | Sam Wright

The Federal Reserve hiked rates for the first time in three years. The impulse is to ask what comes next. Another two hikes? Probably. More after that? Maybe. The better question is WHY is the Fed hiking now. Because there’s a difference between putting the screws on inflation and removing stimulus that’s no longer justified. In our view, this looks more like a recalibration that no longer needs the same level of policy support. The parts of the economy generating the most heat—artificial intelligence capex and energy disruption—are relatively insensitive to rate moves. That matters because it suggests this isn’t the start of an aggressive effort to rein in the economy. Higher yields may be an opportunity, not a warning. What happens when private-market enthusiasm collides with valuation discipline? That question came up repeatedly at CAIS Live New York. Across advisor conversations and panel discussions, topics ranged from evergreen private equity structures and AI-related concentration risk to the growing valuation gap between public and private markets. Together, they pointed to a common challenge: identifying opportunities while staying disciplined about risk. Thank you to everyone who took the time to connect with the Voya IM and Pomona Capital teams! We appreciated the thoughtful exchange of ideas and the opportunity to hear a range of perspectives from across the industry, including the insights that Pomona’s Michael Granoff shared alongside leaders from Hamilton Lane and HarbourVest Partners. #CAISLive #PrivateEquity #AlternativeInvestments #WealthManagement

AI companies say development needs to slow down. Freight costs are flashing inflation warnings. And the Fed’s blunt tool may miss the real bottlenecks. This week’s #3in3 with James Lydotes, CFA looks at three tipping points that are changing the trajectory: In #AI, safety and oversight have suddenly become mainstream topics. Top AI CEOs agree on the What. But can they agree on the How? Either way, AI demand isn’t slowing down any time soon. Transportation companies can offer a real-time window into inflation trends—and what we’re seeing is making us more cautious toward companies that will have a tougher time passing through higher input costs onto customers. The Fed raised rates to remove accommodation, but today’s inflation is driven more by physical bottlenecks than excess demand. 🎥 3 ideas. 3 minutes. Let’s flip the timer. Market corrections are never comfortable. Even when you know they’re a normal part of investing, it’s hard to watch your account balance fall and do nothing. The challenge is that knowing when to sell is only one part of the decision. At some point, you have to choose when to get back in, and that’s much harder than it sounds. Our latest client-approved article, Market Corrections Are Inevitable. Changing Your Plan Isn't, looks at what past corrections can teach us about staying focused when markets are bumpy and uncertainty is high. Could small caps be setting up their next leg higher? James Lydotes, CFA kicks off the Fall season In this week’s #3in3: 🔎 Small caps may look expensive on the surface, but earnings strength and a recent pullback may be creating an attractive setup. ⚡ Energy has led the market this year, yet still offers attractive cash flow, shareholder returns, and valuation support. 🛡️ Defense companies are winning some of the biggest contracts in years, but the stocks have yet to catch up. Somethings got to give. 🎥 3 ideas. 3 minutes. Let’s flip the timer.
