🔊 New Tutorial Confirmed for Unicode Technology Workshop 2026 Preparing Next Gen Developers to Enable a Multilingual Internet: The Journey to Integrate the Universal Acceptance Curriculum Geraldo Ferreira's tutorial discusses how as the Internet expands globally, software must adapt to support internationalized identifiers including the Universal Acceptance (UA) of all valid domain names and email addresses. To achieve this, it is essential that future software developers receive the education and training required to build applications and systems that are UA-ready. Integrating these concepts into a technical degree program allows for a sustainable capacity-building mechanism. ICANN has developed a UA Curriculum and is collaborating with universities around the world to address this gap. These skills will help developers stand out from the competition in today’s competitive marketplace. This tutorial will provide an overview of the methodology that has been implemented to incorporate the UA Curriculum into technical courses at universities. The session will include the progress of UA Curriculum adoption by universities in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. These are areas where local communities speak languages such as Arabic, Tamil, Shona, and Spanish. The session includes a demonstration of the resources and tools being used to integrate concepts on internationalization, Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), and Email Address Internationalization (EAI). 📢 New Tutorial Confirmed for Unicode Technology Workshop 2026 How to build a LDML-format keyboard In this two-part tutorial, Marc Durdin and Andrew Glass will walk through the Unicode Technical Standard #35, part 7 - LDML keyboards. In Part 1, we will explore the file format, and how to design a basic keyboard. We’ll introduce tools such as Keyman Developer, explain multi-device support, and discuss how to test, share, and submit the keyboard to CLDR. In Part 2, we’ll dive into building advanced keyboards that leverage the full capabilities of the LDML keyboard specification — including gestures for touch devices, transforms to streamline the text input experience, reorders to canonically ordered text at input time, and how to deal with backspace, the most difficult key on the keyboard. Since 2024, YouTube has gone a step further than many other sites by allowing handles to be made up of a wide range of Unicode scripts, beyond just the English alphabet commonly used in the industry. By doing this, YouTube creators can represent themselves in their native languages or the languages of their audience. This offering was not easy to deliver, having to balance challenges with user confusion, sharing, visual similarity, and more. SEI was created to support the inclusion of scripts in the Unicode Standard, establishing a foundation for digital spaces to become more accessible to minority script communities. However, there is an unofficial category of “accessibility scripts” that are often used by communities with disabilities and in turn require additional layers of nuance to effectively propose, encode, and integrate into digital spaces. In this talk, Kyra Ann Dawkins, MFA and Helena Kansa will survey accessibility scripts of varying encoding statuses to consider how to best advocate for their full stack support.
