Who's Who in Club History Charles Rudolph Walgreen Jr. was a trained pharmacist, president of the Walgreens company and member of the Union League Club of Chicago. As a child, Charles "Chuck" Walgreen Jr. began making deliveries for his father's drugstore on Chicago's South Side. Like other drug stores of the time, Walgreen’s locations had a soda and ice cream fountain that did great business in the summer months. Instead of shuttering the counter in the winter, Charles Walgreen Sr. decided to start serving hot food. By age 11, Walgreen Jr. was busy delivering his mom's homemade soup to the store's new lunch counter. 41st and Cottage Grove, 39th and Cottage Grove and then 47th and Cottage Grove were the first locations of the Walgreens stores. These neighborhood cluster locations allowed Charles Walgreen Sr. to "piece out" inventory from one store to another, keeping operational costs very low. After graduating from the University of Michigan School of Pharmacy in 1928, Walgreen Jr. returned home to work for the family once again. This time he served on the store opening crew, in the ice cream plant and in personnel, sales, manufacturing, purchasing and real estate before becoming vice president in 1933. He would become executive assistant to his father in 1935 and president shortly before the senior Walgreen's death in 1939. In the 1950s, Walgreen Jr. redefined the retail drug business, converting Walgreens from clerk-assisted shopping to self-service, a new concept that was sweeping the nation post World War II where customers could choose products from shelves by themselves. Previously, most retail goods were kept behind the counters, and store employees would gather products for customers. Walgreen Jr. would dedicate his life to the business. As president, a position he held for 24 years, Walgreen Jr. redefined the role of the modern drugstore and transformed his father's local Chicago shop into a conglomerate. Walgreen Jr. served as the company's president until 1963 and as chairman of the board from 1963 to 1976. #ulcc #history

The Rule of Law and Military Justice last week at the Club In our first discussion, we examined what the rule of law generally demands. In our second conversation, we examined how the second Trump Administration tests the limits of the rule of law. This time, we turned to applying the rule of law to one of the most crucial and high-stakes arenas, that of military justice and the lawfulness of military operations. Thank you to our guest speakers Marlin Paschal and Elisabeth Pennix for an enlightening conversation and to our moderator Raff Donelson. _________________________________________ Marlin Paschal and Elisabeth Pennix are both military legal experts with extensive experience advising on and adjudicating the lawfulness of military actions. While Paschal served as a senior judge advocate and command legal advisor across multiple military assignments in the Army, Pennix has a similarly impressive tenure in the Navy, having served as a military commissions legal advisor, chief prosecutor and detainee operations attorney in Iraq. ULCC member Raff Donelson is an interdisciplinary scholar working at the intersection of legal theory and moral philosophy. Recently named a 2026–2027 Illinois Humanities Road Scholar Speaker, he travels the state, sharing his insights and perspective on complex legal issues with local communities.

Who’s Who in Club History John J. Pershing organized one of the greatest armies in history in time to enable the American people to strike the decisive blow in the greatest conflict in history and to ensure not only the triumph of the American Armies, but of the ideals and principals for which we had spent our blood and treasure. Only those who knew the task with which he was faced upon his arrival in France can fully appreciate the great accomplishment there. He not only organized an army which was equal to the best at the close of the war, but a Service of Supplies unexampled for its extent and efficiency. During his command in World War I, Pershing resisted British and French demands that American forces be integrated with their armies. They desired money and men but did not desire an American Army. General Pershing made it clear that the American people would only be satisfied to make the necessary sacrifice if it was to be done under the American flag by an American army. He also thought that a united American military force would hurt German morale more. Over the course of his military career, General Pershing commanded several famous Americans, including fellow Missourian and future President Harry S. Truman, General George S. Patton, General and later U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall, and General Douglas MacArthur, making General Pershing one of America’s most influential military leaders. Pershing is the only American to be promoted in his own lifetime to General of the Armies, the highest possible rank in the United States Army. Chicago’s eastern segment of 39th Street was renamed to honor him on December 8, 1920. ------------------ "The election of General John J. Pershing as an Honarary Member of the Union League Club of Chicago is not only a fitting tribute to a great soldier, but an honor to the Union League Club by the inclusion of his name upon the roll of its distinguished members." - ULCC Member Brig. Gen. Nathan William MacChesney
